What the available information does support is a practical set of four Google app options—Chrome, Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos—and an important messaging change: Samsung says Samsung Messages will no longer be supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher starting July 2026. Treat “lighter” as a workflow preference, not a measured performance claim.
What “lighter” can—and can’t—mean
For this comparison, “lighter” means a workflow that better fits your routine: for example, using a browser that carries tabs and bookmarks between devices, or storing files in a cloud app you already use. It does not mean that an app has a smaller install size, uses less battery, or runs faster. Samsung’s published descriptions do not provide head-to-head measurements of those outcomes or prove that an alternative improves productivity.

The four options below are Google apps Samsung documents as available on Galaxy phones, either preinstalled or downloadable. They are choices to evaluate, not a claim that every Samsung app needs replacing. Availability and screens can vary with Galaxy model and software version.
Four Google app options for specific workflows
1. Chrome for browsing across devices
Samsung says Chrome can carry open tabs, bookmarks, and address-bar data from a computer. That makes it a relevant option if you want to continue browsing across devices. Check that the browsing setup you want is available and configured on your devices; the cited Galaxy guide describes the feature, not a comparative advantage over Samsung Internet.

2. Drive for cloud files
Samsung describes Google Drive as an app for opening, viewing, renaming, and sharing cloud files. Consider it when those file tasks are part of your routine. The guide does not establish that Drive replaces every Samsung file-management function, so compare the tasks you actually use rather than assuming the apps are interchangeable.
3. Gmail for email
Samsung lists Gmail for sending and receiving email. It is a straightforward option if Gmail is already part of your email workflow. The available feature description does not establish a broader advantage over Samsung’s email options.

4. Google Photos for photo and video backup
Samsung describes Google Photos as an option for backing up photos and videos. Consider it if you want that backup workflow; check the app and account settings to make sure they match your needs. The cited guide does not compare backup behavior, storage, or privacy with Samsung Gallery or other services.

Samsung’s Galaxy guide also lists Google Messages, but messaging deserves separate consideration because of Samsung’s announced support change.

Samsung Messages users: check the July 2026 change
Samsung’s US support page says that starting July 2026, Samsung Messages will no longer be supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher, and recommends switching to Google Messages. Samsung says devices running Android 11 or lower are not affected by that support change. Samsung says its newest Galaxy phones come with Google Messages preinstalled. To choose a default SMS app, Samsung gives this path: Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > SMS app, then select the app you want. Before and after switching
Samsung says message history transfers automatically when switching, with completion time depending on the amount of data and taking up to approximately 24 hours. That is Samsung’s guidance, not a guarantee for every model or carrier. Samsung also cautions that RCS may pause temporarily on pre-2022 devices; all participants need RCS enabled for RCS messaging. Choose by fit, not by a blanket “better” claim
Before changing defaults or moving to another app, decide what you need it to do. A useful comparison starts with the task, then checks whether the app works on your Galaxy model and software version and whether it fits the other devices you use. For messaging, also account for the support transition, history transfer, and RCS caveats described above.

- Workflow: Identify the task you want to make simpler—browsing, handling cloud files, email, or photo backup.

- Continuity: Verify that the app supports the way you work across your phone, computer, or other devices. Samsung specifically describes Chrome’s cross-device browsing data feature; that description should not be generalized to every app.
- Meaning of “lighter”: Decide whether you mean fewer workflow steps or a simpler interface. The sources cited here do not establish comparative app speed, storage footprint, battery use, or productivity results.
