Samsung 980 PRO 2TB: Is the Standard Drive Single-Sided?

The standard Samsung 980 PRO 2TB is single-sided, but its factory-heatsink sibling is a different model with substantially different dimensions.

The standard Samsung 980 PRO 2TB, model MZ-V8P2T0BW, is single-sided: its controller, DRAM cache and NAND packages are on one side of the circuit board. A model-specific physical inspection and an independent review support that conclusion; Samsung’s official specifications identify the model and dimensions but do not label its layout as single- or double-sided.

Which 980 PRO 2TB model is single-sided?

The single-sided answer applies to the standard bare drive, model MZ-V8P2T0BW. A physical inspection of that model reports the controller, DRAM cache and two memory packages beneath the label on one side of the PCB. An independent review of the 2TB drive also describes it as single-sided. DNS Club’s model-specific inspection and PC Perspective’s 2TB review support the finding.

This is an observed hardware layout, not a claim Samsung makes in its product specifications. Samsung’s official materials confirm the model code, form factor and dimensions, but do not explicitly state whether the drive is single- or double-sided. Samsung’s support page lists the standard model’s specifications.

Check the model code: the heatsink version is different

Samsung also sells a 2TB 980 PRO with a factory-installed heatsink. It is model MZ-V8P2T0CW, not the standard MZ-V8P2T0BW. The distinction matters when checking clearance: Samsung’s brochure lists the standard drive at up to 80.15 × 22.15 × 2.38 mm, while the heatsink version is up to 80.15 × 24.15 × 8.6 mm. Samsung’s 980 PRO brochure gives both model codes and dimensions; its UK product page identifies the heatsink model.

These figures describe the drive products; they do not establish fit in a particular computer.

Will the standard 980 PRO fit your computer?

Single-sided construction can be relevant where a slot has limited room behind the M.2 board, but sidedness alone cannot confirm compatibility. Samsung lists the standard 2TB drive as M.2 2280, PCIe Gen 4.0 x4/NVMe 1.3c, with dimensions of 80.15 × 22.15 × 2.38 mm and a maximum weight of 9.0 g. The capacity is listed as 2,000 GB on the support page; Samsung’s brochure labels it 2TB. These are Samsung product specifications, not a compatibility guarantee for every system.

  • Next-level SSD performance: Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD for next-level computing. 980 PRO delivers 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe 3.0, while maintaining compatibility with PCIe 3.0.
  • Maximum Speed: Get read speeds up to 7,000 MB s with 980 PRO and push the limits of what SSDs can do. Powered by a new Elpsis controller designed to harmonize the flash memory components and the interface for superior speed – with a PCIe 4.0 interface that’s 2x faster than PCIe 3.0 SSDs and 12x faster than Samsung SATA SSDs – every component of this NVMe SSD is manufactured by Samsung for performance that lasts.
  • A winning combination: Designed for hardcore gamers and tech-savvy users, the 980 PRO offers high-performance bandwidth and throughput for heavy-duty applications in gaming, graphics, data analytics, and more. It's fast at loading games, so you can play more and wait less.
  • Efficient M.2 SSD: The 980 PRO comes in a compact M.2 2280 form factor, which can be easily plugged into desktops and laptops. Due to its size and thus optimized power efficiency, it’s ideal for building high-performance computing systems.
  • Reliable thermal control: High-performance SSDs usually require high-performance thermal control. To ensure stable performance, the 980 PRO uses nickel coating to help manage the controller's heat level and a heat spreader label to deliver effective thermal control of the NAND chip.
  1. Read the label or listing carefully and confirm the full model code: MZ-V8P2T0BW for the standard drive, or MZ-V8P2T0CW for the factory-heatsink version.
  2. Check the computer or motherboard manual for support for an M.2 2280 NVMe drive and for any slot-specific restrictions.
  3. Compare the drive’s dimensions with the available space, including any installed motherboard cover, laptop shield or thermal pad. If considering the factory-heatsink version, account for its 8.6 mm maximum height and 24.15 mm width.
  4. Follow the device maker’s instructions for heatsinks and thermal pads; the drive’s sidedness and published dimensions cannot determine which cooling arrangement a particular system requires.

What Samsung’s performance figures do—and do not—tell you

Samsung’s brochure lists up to 7,000 MB/s sequential read and 5,100 MB/s sequential write for the standard 2TB model. These are specification figures, and Samsung notes that performance can vary with system hardware and configuration. They do not establish physical fit or change the evidence about component placement.
