At the same 200 KB, WebP or AVIF can look cleaner than JPEG because each format’s encoder makes different decisions about which image information to preserve under a limited byte budget. But neither format wins on every image: the result depends on the source, encoder, settings and details you notice. Equal file size is a fair storage comparison—not proof that two files have equal visual quality.
Why can WebP and AVIF look better at the same file size?
Lossy compression reduces image accuracy. During encoding, information is quantized and, in some workflows, color detail is reduced through chroma subsampling. Different formats and encoder implementations make different trade-offs about what to keep and what to discard.

Under the same byte limit, one encoder may preserve gradients, fine texture or edges more effectively than another. That can make its output look cleaner even though both files occupy the same space. The extension alone does not guarantee that result: encoder version, settings and image content all matter. Google’s WebP Compression Study found WebP files 25%–34% smaller than JPEG at equivalent or slightly better SSIM across its reported test sets. That is evidence of WebP’s efficiency in those tests, not a direct test of all three formats at exactly 200 KB.

There is no dependable universal ranking for every image and encoder. The AVIF comparison benchmark, updated on 2022-12-14, reports results for particular test sets, metrics and settings—not a guarantee that AVIF will look best for a current image. Its quality chart averages MS-SSIM BD-Rate over the subset1 and Kodak sets in a stated range of 0.1–3 bits per pixel. The project also reports decode timings from Chrome 110 development builds on specified machines, so those speed results are benchmark-specific and dated. See the AVIF comparison benchmark for its test conditions and reproducible commands.

Format capabilities may also affect the choice. MDN describes JPEG as a widely supported lossy still-image format. WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation and metadata; AVIF supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation and high color depth. MDN lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari support for both WebP and AVIF in its current guide, but browser support can vary by version and feature. Check the MDN image format guide for the audience and capabilities that matter to your site. WebP’s format is also described in RFC 9649, an informational RFC published in November 2024.
Why does a JPEG look blurrier at 200 KB?
A 200 KB ceiling forces an encoder to discard or simplify some image information. If the JPEG encoder’s choices remove details your eye is sensitive to, the result may look soft, blocky or smeared beside another format encoded to the same size. That does not mean every JPEG will look worse: content and settings determine which artifacts appear.

Photographs and texture
Lossy compression is often effective for detailed photographs, but fine texture can be softened or become uneven. Inspect skin, foliage, hair and other intricate regions rather than judging only the overall impression.
Gradients and smooth areas
Large areas of gradual color change can reveal banding or uneven transitions. Compare skies, shadows and other smooth regions at the intended display size.

Text, line art and sharp edges
High-contrast edges, small text and line drawings are especially worth checking. Chroma-subsampling artifacts can be visible around colored text on a flat background. A file that looks acceptable as a photo may fare poorly when it contains crisp lettering or graphic shapes.
These content-specific trade-offs are why web.dev advises that there is no universal compression setting suitable for every case. Its image performance guide discusses choosing compression based on the image and inspecting the result.

How to compare the same image fairly at 200 KB
Quality sliders are not interchangeable across formats. To answer which output looks better at the same size, compare actual encoded files against the same byte ceiling, source and display conditions.

- Start with one original. Use the exact same source image for JPEG, WebP and AVIF so the formats are the variable being compared.
- Set the same byte limit. Encode each file to meet the 200 KB ceiling; do not assume that matching quality-slider numbers creates a fair comparison.
- Record the tools and settings. Note encoder versions and options so another person can reproduce the files. Keep metadata treatment consistent because it contributes to total file size.
- View at the same dimensions and scale. Compare the images as they will actually be rendered, not at mismatched sizes or zoom levels.
- Check different kinds of detail. Inspect photographs, gradients, fine texture, text and line art separately; a codec may handle one better than another.
- Use both visual review and a metric if available. SSIM can help quantify similarity, but it does not capture every aspect of perceived quality. Keep the metric and side-by-side viewing tied to the same source and output conditions.
This method can reveal the best result for a particular image and workflow. It cannot establish that the same format will always win on another image.

How should websites deliver AVIF, WebP and JPEG?
A site can offer modern formats while retaining a JPEG fallback. The browser selects the first supported source in a <picture> element, as shown in web.dev’s image delivery example.
<picture>
<source srcset="photo.avif" type="image/avif">
<source srcset="photo.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="photo.jpg" alt="Description of the image">
</picture>
An image CDN can also select or deliver a format based on the browser or device. Whichever approach you use, review the chosen outputs in the actual publishing workflow: format support is not a substitute for checking visual quality, file size and fallback behavior.
