Altman used harsh, emotional language about former board members and said he had to repair the damage after they left. The headline’s “explodes” is a characterization, not evidence of a literal outburst.
What Sam Altman said
According to Victor Tangermann’s Futurism report on the Bloomberg interview, Altman said the former board members who he believed had harmed him and OpenAI were gone and that he had to deal with the consequences:
“And all those people that I feel like really fucked me and fucked the company were gone, and now I had to clean up their mess.”
He also described the episode as personally damaging, saying, “And it felt so unfair,” and calling it “a crazy thing to have to go through and then have no time to recover, because the house was on fire.”

These are retrospective statements attributed to Altman by Futurism. They show anger and exhaustion, but the available report does not establish that he literally lost his temper during the interview. The complete Bloomberg interview is not reproduced in the accessible report, so these excerpts should not be treated as a full transcript.
Why did OpenAI’s board remove him?
OpenAI’s contemporaneous public explanation was different from Altman’s later account. In its November 17, 2023 announcement, the board said it had concluded that Altman was “not consistently candid in his communications with the board.” It said that this hindered the board’s ability to carry out its responsibilities and that it “no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

That statement is the board’s stated rationale. It does not provide a complete, independently verified account of every disagreement or event behind the decision, and it should not be presented as proof of undisclosed motives.
Altman’s account of the disagreements
In the account relayed by Futurism, Altman said he had disagreements with certain board members over what he considered conflicts or other problematic behavior. He said those members were unhappy with his efforts to remove them from the board and ended that reflection with: “Lesson learned on that.”

This is Altman’s interpretation of the conflict after the fact. It helps explain how he viewed the relationship, but it does not independently prove that those disagreements caused the November vote or disprove the board’s stated concerns about his communications.
What happened after the firing?
The crisis lasted five days. PBS NewsHour reported on November 22, 2023, that Altman returned as CEO after the standoff. The reconstituted initial board included Bret Taylor as chair, Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo, as described in PBS NewsHour’s coverage.

His reinstatement and the board change explain why Altman later spoke of former directors being gone and of having to “clean up” the aftermath. They do not, by themselves, determine which side’s account of the original dispute was correct.

The reporting supports sharp criticism—not a verified literal “explosion”—and neither account alone supplies a complete, independently established explanation of the dispute.
