Start Salt and Soil by protecting the household’s short-term survival before pursuing expansion. Check available labor, secure food and basic materials, compare construction with trade, and leave room to react when markets, neighbors, migration, or local threats change the plan. The game’s public materials do not establish a universal first building, exact opening sequence, or guaranteed winning strategy, so treat the priorities below as a cautious framework rather than a tested walkthrough.
Salt and Soil is a forthcoming, single-player frontier family strategy game. The documented Jamestown Chronicle playtest follows one family near Jamestown from 1607 through a 30-turn scenario. It is an early build, not a final tutorial, and access, balance, and requirements can change.

What Salt and Soil asks you to manage
Salt and Soil is built around the continuity of one frontier family and its homestead, not the anonymous population model used by many city-builders. The official Steam listing describes a campaign in which household choices, scarce supplies, labor, construction, trade, relationships, and yearly family decisions interact. The developer’s official site presents the same family-centered premise.

That distinction changes how a beginner should think. A larger settlement is not automatically a better one if the household cannot feed it, staff its work, house its members, or survive an unexpected event. Every expansion decision competes with immediate needs and with the family’s ability to respond later.

The documented starting scenario
The official playtest announcement calls its scenario the Jamestown Chronicle: a 30-turn story beginning in 1607 and following one frontier family near Jamestown. Its stated activities include managing limited labor, obtaining food and materials, building, trading, and making family decisions. The announcement is available through the official Steam Community hub.
Do not read “30 turns” as a typical playtime estimate or as proof of a particular success rate. It is a scenario specification for the playtest. The eventual release may contain different scenarios, pacing, or rules.
Why the first settlement is a balancing problem
The store description names food, wood, metal, money, tools, goods, livestock, housing, buildings, and labor as planning constraints. These are not independent checkboxes. A building can consume materials and labor before it produces anything; livestock may create future value while increasing immediate demands; trading can solve a shortage while reducing cash or another useful good. Your first objective is therefore a stable loop of work, supplies, shelter, and decisions—not maximum construction.

What the early-playtest label means
Roman, the solo developer, wrote in the official playtest announcement: “This is an early playtest, so bugs, rough edges, and balance issues are expected.” A failed run may therefore reflect unfinished balancing or a defect rather than a poor strategic choice. Record what happened, restart if necessary, and report reproducible problems through the channels provided with the current build.
Read the first campaign as a 30-turn planning exercise
The Jamestown Chronicle gives you a bounded test of the game’s core loop. You are not trying to solve the entire colonial economy immediately; you are trying to keep a family functioning while conditions change.

Set a survival threshold
Before spending on expansion, identify what must remain available for the next decision window: food, workable labor, shelter, and the materials needed for an urgent repair or essential project. The public descriptions do not publish a numerical reserve or a fixed consumption formula, so use the interface’s current values and warnings rather than an imported rule of thumb.
Separate essential work from optional growth
Classify each proposed action as one of three types:
- Immediate survival: actions that address food, shelter, safety, or a shortage that could stop work.
- Capacity: actions that improve production, storage, tools, livestock, or labor efficiency later.
- Optional growth: projects whose benefit can wait until the household has a buffer.
When labor or materials are tight, complete survival work first, then capacity, and postpone optional growth. This ordering is a strategy inference from the documented constraints, not an official build order.
Use the 30 turns to learn the loop
On a first run, note what each action consumes and what it returns. Pay attention to whether a project locks labor for several turns, whether a trade leaves you exposed to a later shortage, and how the year-end council frames events. Because exact costs and turn timings are not published, your own in-game record is more reliable than a fixed online opening recipe.

A cautious opening routine
The following sequence translates the official systems into a practical first pass. It deliberately avoids invented button names or costs; use the labels and numbers shown by the current build.
- Inspect the household. Count available workers, identify who can perform the needed jobs, and note any current family condition or obligation. Limited labor is explicitly part of the playtest challenge.
- List the next food and material needs. Check food first, then wood, metal, tools, and any goods required for the next necessary action. Do not assume a resource is safe simply because its current value is positive; compare it with upcoming commitments.
- Reserve labor for essentials. Keep enough people available for food and basic production before assigning a long construction task. If the interface reveals action duration, include the opportunity cost of workers who will be unavailable while the project runs.
- Price construction against the reserve. Before confirming a building, compare its material and labor cost with the supplies you need to survive the next stretch. Official pages do not identify a universally correct first building, so choose the project that addresses your most immediate bottleneck.
- Consider trade as a response, not an automatic profit play. Trade with neighboring people or other contacts can address a local shortage, but the published material does not establish a best trade, fixed exchange rate, or risk-free deal. Keep enough money and goods to handle the next problem.
- Commit only after checking the forecast. If a new event, market change, migration, or neighboring action appears, re-evaluate the plan before spending the remaining labor or materials.
- Write down the result. At the end of the turn or work cycle, record what improved, what became scarce, and which assumption was wrong. This makes the second attempt a deliberate adjustment rather than a restart with the same blind spots.
How to decide between building and trading
Both construction and trade can solve a shortage, but they expose the household to different risks. Use the following questions in order.
Is the shortage urgent?
If the household cannot meet a near-term food, shelter, or safety need, prefer the action that resolves it fastest with the least labor exposure. A large project that eventually improves production is not a substitute for surviving the turns before it finishes.

Will the project pay back soon enough?
For a building, compare its stated cost and completion time with the number of turns remaining in the scenario and with your labor reserve. A project may be worthwhile in a longer campaign but unnecessary in a 30-turn test if its benefits arrive too late.

What does the trade consume?
Trading converts one resource into another and may reduce money, goods, or future bargaining capacity. Before accepting a deal, check whether the item you give away is also needed for housing, tools, livestock, or a council-related choice.
Can you keep a fallback?
Do not spend the last usable quantity of a critical resource unless the action immediately removes the risk. A modest reserve gives you options when markets shift or a local event interrupts production.
| Situation | Safer first question |
|---|---|
| Food is falling | Which available action restores food without taking the labor needed for the next essential task? |
| Materials are scarce | Is the proposed building essential now, or can trade or a delayed project protect the reserve? |
| Labor is fully assigned | Which assignment has the lowest immediate value and can be postponed without creating a new shortage? |
| Cash or goods are limited | Will this trade solve a near-term problem while leaving a reserve for another event? |
Manage the annual cycle, not just individual turns
The official description presents each year as a connected sequence of production, construction, trade, resource management, and labor allocation. The year concludes with a Family Council informed by what actually happened. A useful mental model is:
- Plan: choose work around current needs and available labor.
- Act: build, produce, trade, and respond to settlement events.
- Review: examine hunger or surplus, debt or growth, losses, relationships, and threats.
- Decide: enter the Family Council and choose the response that best protects the family’s longer-term continuity.
This describes the published campaign loop; it does not claim a particular menu path or exact turn-control sequence.

The council is not a detached story screen. The store description says its narrative and structured choices are informed by campaign state, and that decisions can shape family memory and inheritance. Events such as a surplus, hunger, debt, growth, births, deaths, marriages, quarrels, alliances, and threats may contribute to the dilemmas presented.
When the council appears, read the choice in two time frames:

- Continuity effect: What kind of household does it preserve for the next year, heir, or settlement relationship?
The Steam listing says generative AI is used for some Annual Family Council narrative text and structured choice outcomes. The text is constrained by campaign state and setting and is validated before presentation. That disclosure applies to specified council content; it does not mean that all gameplay, historical material, or every event is generated by AI.
Respond to a changing settlement
Static plans are especially fragile because the official descriptions include changing markets, migration, settlement developments, neighboring communities, local conflict, and other dangers.
Markets and trade
Treat a market change as a reason to recalculate, not as proof that one commodity is always best. If a new price helps today but consumes a reserve needed for food or tools, the apparent gain may increase the household’s risk.
Migration and settlement growth
New arrivals or changes in nearby settlements can alter labor, demand, relationships, and threats. Recheck housing and food before accepting growth that the current homestead cannot support.
Neighbors and Indigenous nations
The official store description refers to relations with Indigenous nations, neighboring settlements, traders, migrants, and bandit camps. It describes possibilities including trade, cooperation, negotiation, and conflict, with effects on safety, resources, reputation, and the family’s future. Treat each group and relationship as a distinct social context; do not reduce every community to a generic obstacle or a single resource source.
Conflict and safety
If a threat appears, protect the household’s ability to continue working before chasing an optional economic gain. The public materials do not publish combat formulas or a fixed defense checklist, so follow the current scenario’s warnings and costs rather than assuming a universal response.

Common beginner mistakes and recoveries
Expanding before securing food
Symptom: construction is underway while food or labor is declining. Recovery: stop treating the project as sacred; redirect available workers to the immediate shortage and postpone optional expansion. The exact cancellation or reassignment controls depend on the build.
Assigning every worker permanently
Symptom: a surprise event appears, but no labor remains to respond. Recovery: release the least urgent assignment and preserve a flexible worker when the interface allows it. Limited labor is a named challenge, so a fully committed workforce carries a real opportunity cost.
Trading away the reserve
Symptom: a profitable-looking deal leaves no money or goods for the next need. Recovery: evaluate the next likely obligation before accepting another trade, and keep a smaller but usable reserve.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Assuming the first run reveals the final balance
Symptom: a strategy fails because a cost, event, or output differs after an update. Recovery: check the current build and treat the playtest as provisional. The developer explicitly warns that bugs, rough edges, and balance issues are expected.
Ignoring the council because it is “just narrative”
Symptom: the homestead survives the current year but enters the next with a weakened family position or damaged relationship. Recovery: read each choice as both a present action and a continuity decision. The official description says council choices can affect family memory and inheritance.
What official materials do not yet establish
A trustworthy beginner guide must draw a line between documented systems and details that have not been published. The official pages reviewed do not provide:
- a complete click-by-click tutorial;
- verified starting inventory numbers;
- exact construction costs or production formulas;
- an authoritative first building;
- a universal first-year build order;
- published combat or trade probabilities;
- evidence for an optimal strategy across every future scenario.
Accordingly, any opening priority in this guide is an interpretation of the stated constraints. Check labels, costs, tooltips, and warnings in the current build, and revise your plan when an update changes them.
When to restart the Jamestown Chronicle
Restart when the household has entered a compounding failure that your remaining labor and supplies cannot realistically reverse, or when you have learned enough about an action to test a different choice. Do not restart merely because the first few turns were inefficient; a family-centered campaign can still recover if you retain food, some labor, and a path to obtain materials.
For a useful second attempt, change one major assumption at a time. For example, delay an optional building, preserve more trade goods, or keep one worker flexible. Comparing one deliberate change is more informative than making a completely different sequence without knowing which decision mattered.
The practical starting rule
For the current playtest, the safest beginner rule is: feed the family, preserve workable labor, obtain the materials needed for the next essential action, and expand only when the reserve can absorb the cost. Recheck that rule whenever a market shift, migration, relationship, or threat changes the household’s circumstances. Then use the Family Council to decide not only how to survive the year, but what kind of family and homestead will carry forward.
