For US adults comparing mainstream dating apps, Tinder describes an optional government-ID-plus-photo check in selected test markets, Bumble lists separate photo and ID verification, and Hinge offers selfie-based checks whose availability and retention rules vary by location. None of these badges guarantees that a profile is truthful or that a person is safe to meet. The practical choice is the app whose checks and data policies fit your needs, combined with its other safety tools and sensible precautions.
What photo and ID verification actually establish
Photo verification and ID verification answer different questions. A photo check generally compares a live or recorded selfie with the images on a dating profile. For example, Tinder says its Photo Verification uses a video selfie and facial recognition to compare the face with profile photos. Hinge describes selfie verification using liveness and face comparison. These processes may help assess whether the person completing the check resembles the profile imagery; they do not establish every biographical claim or predict how that person will behave.
An ID check adds a review of government-document information. Tinder’s combined ID + Photo Verification says it compares a government-issued ID photo with the selfie and profile photos and checks the ID’s date of birth against the account age. That is a distinct check from matching a face to profile photos, but it still is not a guarantee that the ID is valid or that the person is safe. Tinder explicitly cautions that its combined feature does not guarantee either point.
There is no independently comparable evaluation in the available official materials establishing that one app’s verification prevents more harm than another’s. The comparison below is about the checks the companies describe, availability, data handling and additional controls—not a proven safety ranking.

Combined ID + Photo Verification is optional and limited to some users in selected test markets. | For the combined feature, Tinder says facial geometry, two video-selfie screenshots and specified ID-derived images and information are kept for the account’s life. | Safety guidance includes staying in-app while assessing a match, public first meetings, sharing plans and arranging your own transport. |
| Bumble | Safety Center lists Photo Verification and ID Verification as separate features. | Reviewed overview pages do not establish availability for every location or feature. | Detailed retention terms are not stated in the reviewed overview pages. | Lists in-app voice and video calls, Share Date, block/report/unmatch, Private Detector and Deception Detector. |
| Hinge | Selfie checks compare a selfie with profile photos; Face Check also describes biometric selfie analysis for age estimation and fraud-related checks. The reviewed pages do not describe it as a government-ID check. | Face Check is rolling out in phases where local regulations permit; Hinge says some regions require it. | Optional Selfie Verification: facial-geometry template deleted within 24 hours; three audit screenshots retained for the account’s life. Required Face Check has different, longer retention terms. | Face Check is described as an additional profile check, not a guarantee of identity or safety. |
Availability can depend on location, rollout and account eligibility. Check the app’s current help information for your region before choosing an app specifically for a verification feature.
1. Tinder: the clearest described combination of photo and government-ID checks
How its checks work
Tinder’s Photo Verification asks for a short video selfie and compares it with profile photos using facial recognition. Tinder says a blue check can indicate that a user matches the photos supplied. It also cautions that the badge does not authenticate all profile information and should not replace your judgment. See Tinder’s Photo Verification help page.
The separate ID + Photo Verification feature adds an ID review: Tinder says it checks a government-issued photo ID against the selfie and profile photos and checks the ID date of birth against the profile age. The feature is optional and, according to Tinder’s help page updated April 16, 2026, available only to some users in selected test markets on iOS, Android and tinder.com. Do not assume it is available to every US user. Tinder’s wording is direct: “It’s important to note that this feature doesn’t guarantee the validity of the ID or the safety of a particular user.” Read the ID + Photo Verification details for current eligibility and terms.

Privacy trade-off and who may prefer it
Tinder says that, for the combined badge, it retains facial geometry for the life of the account. It also says it keeps two video-selfie screenshots and, for the ID check, the ID photo, name and a redacted ID image for the life of the account. This is the stated policy for the combined feature, not a retention rule to apply to every Tinder verification process. Review the feature terms before submitting sensitive material.

2. Bumble: separate photo and ID verification, plus in-app controls
What Bumble lists
Bumble’s Safety Center lists both Photo Verification and ID Verification. It also describes in-app voice and video calls, Share Date, block/report/unmatch controls, Private Detector and Deception Detector. Bumble’s support page says Deception Detector is AI-powered and supported by human moderation; that is a description of the company’s system, not independent evidence of how effectively it identifies deception.

What is not established in the overview
The reviewed Bumble overview pages do not establish where each verification feature is available, nor do they provide detailed data-retention terms. If those details matter to your decision, check the feature’s current availability and privacy terms for your location rather than assuming the features are universal. Bumble may suit people who value having multiple in-app interaction and reporting tools alongside distinct photo and ID verification options, but the listed features alone do not support calling it safer than Tinder or Hinge.
See Bumble’s safety-features support page for its feature descriptions.
3. Hinge: selfie verification and a location-dependent Face Check
Selfie verification and Face Check
Hinge’s ordinary Selfie Verification is a selfie-based process, not a government-ID check in the reviewed help materials. Its separate Face Check page describes a biometric video selfie and facial geometry used to estimate age, check profile photos, reduce fraud and detect whether another profile may be using the same likeness. Users who pass and have a clear solo face photo matching the selfie receive a Selfie Verified badge.

Hinge says Face Check is rolling out in phases where local regulations permit and that some regions require it. As a result, users should not infer from a Hinge badge—or the absence of one—that every user in every place has completed the same process. Hinge states: “It’s important to note that this feature doesn’t guarantee the identity or safety of a particular user.” Its Face Check Scan help page explains the feature and its regional qualification.
Retention differs between optional verification and required Face Check
Hinge says facial-geometry templates for ordinary optional Selfie Verification are normally deleted within 24 hours, while three audit screenshots are retained during the account’s life. Where Face Check is required, Hinge says facial geometry is retained for the account’s life and deleted after account closure, subject to its stated terms. These are distinct processes with distinct retention rules; consult the applicable terms for your location. Hinge’s Selfie Verification help page describes the optional process.
Hinge may be a fit if you want a selfie-based check and are comfortable with the applicable biometric-data policy. The reviewed pages do not describe Hinge’s process as government-ID verification, so it should not be treated as equivalent to an ID check.

How to choose based on your priorities
- You specifically want a government-ID comparison: Look for Tinder’s combined ID + Photo Verification if it is offered in your market. Bumble lists ID Verification as well, but verify the exact local process and terms. Hinge’s reviewed pages describe selfie checks, not a government-ID check.
- You want a photo-to-profile comparison: Tinder and Hinge describe selfie or video-selfie comparisons with profile imagery. Bumble lists Photo Verification. A badge speaks to the company’s specified check, not every detail of the profile.
- You are most concerned about biometric retention: Compare the exact process, not just the app name. Tinder’s combined feature and Hinge’s required Face Check have stated account-lifetime retention for specified information; Hinge’s ordinary optional selfie verification has a different stated policy.
- You want safety controls beyond verification: Compare in-app communication, date-sharing, reporting and blocking tools. Bumble lists several such controls; Tinder’s safety guidance emphasizes precautions before and during a first meeting.
Before uploading an ID or selfie, read the current feature-specific privacy terms and confirm whether the check is optional or required for your location. A feature’s existence in an app’s help center does not establish that every user can access it.
Use verification alongside practical dating safety
Verification is one signal, not a substitute for conversation, judgment or an exit plan. Tinder’s published safety tips advise meeting where other people are present—“Pick a place where there’s people around for the first hangout.”—and arranging your own transportation: “Plan your own way there and back, so leaving is always your call.” These are Tinder’s recommendations, not a guarantee of safety. Read its Safety tips.
- Keep early conversations in the app while you assess whether the match seems consistent and respectful.
- Be attentive to pressure to move off-app quickly, requests for sensitive information or behavior that conflicts with what the person has said.
- For a first meeting, choose a public place, tell someone you trust where you are going, keep your phone charged and arrange your own transport.
- Use the app’s block and report tools if someone makes you uncomfortable or violates its rules; do not treat a verification badge as a reason to ignore warning signs.
What a verified badge cannot tell you
A badge does not establish that every name, job, age-related detail beyond the specific check, intention or personal story is true. A face comparison is not the same thing as an ID review, and neither confirms how someone will act in person. Even where an app checks an ID, its own warning may limit what the result means. Evaluate the actual claim behind the badge, and keep the same boundaries and precautions you would use with an unverified profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which dating app has both photo and ID verification?
Tinder describes optional combined ID + Photo Verification in selected test markets, and Bumble lists separate Photo Verification and ID Verification. Availability and process vary by feature and location; Hinge’s reviewed pages describe selfie-based verification, not a government-ID check.
Does a verified badge mean someone is safe?
No. The checks described by these apps have limited scopes, such as comparing a selfie with profile photos or checking ID information. Tinder and Hinge explicitly say their features do not guarantee a user’s safety or identity.
Does Hinge verify government IDs?
The reviewed Hinge help pages describe Selfie Verification and Face Check using selfie and facial-geometry processes; they do not describe these as government-ID checks.
