Use a real browser, not a plain HTTP request. Launch Playwright or Puppeteer, navigate to the page, wait for the specific content your script needs, optionally run code in the page context, and then call the screenshot API. A screenshot taken immediately after navigation can miss framework hydration, API results, lazy images, or consent dialogs that appear later.

Why an HTTP fetch cannot capture a JavaScript-rendered page

An HTTP client downloads the initial HTML response. It does not normally execute the JavaScript that turns that response into the visible application. If the page builds a table from an API call, hydrates a React or Vue app, opens a modal, or inserts images while scrolling, the HTML you fetch may not contain what a user sees.

Browser automation runs the same broad sequence as a visitor: create a browser context, load the URL, execute page scripts, wait for a meaningful ready condition, and capture pixels. Playwright and Puppeteer both document this navigation-then-screenshot workflow in their official guides: Playwright Page API and Puppeteer screenshots.

Playwright: a complete JavaScript example

The following script is an illustrative, runnable pattern. Install Playwright and its browser binaries using the installation instructions for the version in your project, then save this as screenshot.js and run it with Node.js.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({
    viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
    deviceScaleFactor: 1
  });

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com/app', {
      waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
      timeout: 60000
    });

    // Replace this selector with the element that proves your app is ready.
    await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });

    // Run code in the page's JavaScript context when you must trigger or inspect behavior.
    await page.evaluate(async () => {
      // Example: expose a page-side readiness flag or trigger an app action.
      window.dispatchEvent(new Event('screenshot-requested'));
      if (window.appReadyPromise) await window.appReadyPromise;
    });

    await page.screenshot({
      path: 'page.png',
      fullPage: true,
      type: 'png'
    });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

page.evaluate() executes inside the page. When the function returns a promise, Playwright waits for that promise to resolve, which lets you coordinate with an application-side promise or inspect a rendered value (Page API reference). Remove the illustrative window.appReadyPromise check unless your application defines it; otherwise it is undefined and should not be awaited.

Choose the right navigation wait

waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' waits for the initial document to be parsed. 'load' waits for the page’s load event. 'commit' returns when the response has started committing, and 'networkidle' waits for a period with no network connections. Playwright lists these states but labels network-idle as discouraged for tests; a page can continue rendering after network traffic becomes quiet, and analytics or long polling can prevent it from becoming quiet at all (Playwright Page API).

Prefer a condition tied to the image you need: a visible results container, expected text, a chart canvas, or an application-specific readiness signal. For example:

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Monthly report' }).waitFor();
await page.locator('[data-render-state="ready"]').waitFor();

If the page has no useful marker, combine a bounded timeout with a conservative state check rather than sleeping for an arbitrary long period.

Run JavaScript before the capture

Use page-context JavaScript only for actions that a user or the application would perform. Examples include opening a menu, selecting a tab, waiting for a chart’s promise, or reading a value that controls readiness.

await page.evaluate(() => {
  document.querySelector('#details-tab')?.click();
});
await page.locator('#details-panel').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'details.png' });

For maintainability, prefer Playwright locators and assertions for user-facing interactions, and reserve evaluate() for page-only APIs or state that cannot be reached through a locator. Code in the page context cannot directly access Node.js variables unless you pass them as arguments, and cross-origin security rules still apply.

Pick the screenshot area and format

Goal Playwright setting Result
What is visible now Omit fullPage (or set it to false) The current viewport only
Everything in the scrollable document fullPage: true A full-page image beyond the viewport
One component page.locator(selector).screenshot() Only the selected element
Smaller or interoperable output type: 'jpeg' or 'webp' where supported by your version Format selected by the API

Playwright’s screenshot reference covers full-page and element captures (Playwright screenshots). An element example:

await page.locator('.invoice').screenshot({
  path: 'invoice.png'
});

Full-page capture can expose layout issues that are invisible in the viewport: fixed headers may repeat visually, sticky elements can overlap content, and very tall pages can create large files. Set a deliberate viewport and output format for reproducible jobs.

Puppeteer alternative

If your project already uses Puppeteer, keep the same sequence: navigate, wait for a meaningful signal, run page code if necessary, then call page.screenshot(). The official guide and method reference document the available options (Puppeteer screenshots guide; Page.screenshot() API).

Puppeteer and Playwright expose similar concepts, but exact option names and behavior can change with framework versions. Check the API page for the version pinned in your project before relying on a particular option.

Make delayed content appear reliably

Single-page application hydration

Wait for a heading, route-specific container, or data attribute that appears only after hydration. A successful navigation event alone proves only that a document response arrived.

Lazy-loaded images

Scroll through the page or wait for each image to become complete before capturing. A page may reserve image space while downloading pixels later. If the application exposes a “loaded” class or event, wait for that signal; otherwise inspect the relevant image elements in page context and use a bounded retry.

Animations and transitions

Freeze or disable nonessential animations with a style tag before capture so the result is deterministic:

Do this only when it does not hide content that your screenshot is meant to show.

Authentication and user state

Use a browser context with the required cookies or storage state, and supply credentials through your secret manager rather than hard-coding them. Confirm that the account is allowed to automate the page and that sensitive data will not be written to shared logs or artifacts. Authentication, cross-origin frames, and application-specific readiness rules vary; test them against the target site.

Debugging checklist

  • Blank or almost empty image: You captured before hydration or data rendering. Wait for a content-specific locator and verify its text or dimensions.
  • Timeout on navigation: The site may have slow or long-lived requests. Increase the bounded timeout, use domcontentloaded, and wait separately for the required element.
  • Network-idle never arrives: Avoid using it as the sole readiness condition; analytics, sockets, and polling can keep traffic active (Playwright API).
  • Missing images: Wait for the image region, scroll to trigger lazy loading, and check whether the page requires authentication or blocks the browser’s user agent.
  • Cookie banner, popup, or chat covers content: Click the site’s dismiss control before the final wait, or hide the known selector for your own test capture. Do not conceal elements when the purpose is to document the unmodified user experience.
  • Element screenshot fails: The selector may match nothing, be hidden, or be inside a frame. Wait for visibility and target the correct frame before calling its locator screenshot.
  • Different results in CI: Pin framework versions, set viewport and device scale, disable animations, and save a trace or console output alongside the image for diagnosis.

Playwright or Puppeteer?

Decision factor Choose Playwright when Choose Puppeteer when
Existing codebase Your project already uses Playwright or its locator model Your project already uses Puppeteer APIs
Readiness logic You want locators and web assertions around a specific UI state You prefer Puppeteer’s page methods and selectors
Screenshot scope You need documented viewport, full-page, or element capture options You need the screenshot methods already used by your Puppeteer tests
Version certainty Follow the API for your installed Playwright version Follow the API for your installed Puppeteer version

The available documentation does not establish a universal performance winner. The practical choice is the framework your application already supports and the readiness condition you can express accurately.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF after rendering the page. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor, then more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed.

Cost, reliability, and repeatability

  • Browser automation consumes CPU, memory, and browser-process startup time. Reuse a browser process for batches, but create isolated contexts when cookies or storage must not leak between jobs.
  • Use explicit, bounded timeouts and record the URL, viewport, framework version, and readiness selector with each artifact.
  • Cache only when an unchanged page is acceptable; otherwise include a cache-busting strategy appropriate to your application.
  • Never treat a successful HTTP response as proof that the screenshot is correct. Validate the rendered state and, for critical jobs, inspect the output dimensions or a small set of expected pixels/text.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Will JavaScript execute if I use an image tag or curl directly?

No. Those approaches request the resource but do not provide the browser execution environment needed by most client-rendered applications. Use Playwright, Puppeteer, or a rendering screenshot service.

Is a full-page screenshot the same as a viewport screenshot?

No. A viewport image contains only the currently visible area. Full-page mode extends through the document’s scrollable content and can expose sticky elements or very large output dimensions.

Can I wait for network-idle for every site?

No. Sites with analytics, polling, sockets, or other persistent requests may never become idle, and quiet network traffic does not guarantee that the visual state you need is complete.

Which framework should a new project select?

There is no documented universal winner. Select the framework that matches your existing stack and lets you express a reliable, content-specific readiness condition.
