For a documented full-page image of a website on a Mac, Chrome has a direct option in DevTools: Capture a full size screenshot. Safari’s documented tools cover inspecting a page and saving it as a Web Archive or Page Source, but those are not full-page screenshot images. Choose based on whether you need an image, an archive, or HTML.
Safari vs. Chrome: which should you use?
| What you need | Best fit among the documented workflows | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| A full-page image | Chrome DevTools | A screenshot that includes content beyond the visible viewport. |
| A copy of a webpage with its graphics and links | Safari Web Archive | A saved webpage archive, not an image. Links work while their destinations remain available. |
| The page’s HTML | Safari Page Source | HTML source, not a rendered screenshot. |
| A quick image of only what is visible | macOS screenshot controls or a browser viewport capture | The visible screen or viewport, not the entire scrolling page. |
For occasional full-page capture, Chrome’s documented DevTools workflow is the clearest built-in browser option in the sources covered here. That does not make Chrome universally better: Safari can be the right choice when the goal is to inspect a page or save it in one of Safari’s documented formats.

Capture a full-page website screenshot in Chrome
Chrome’s DevTools documentation distinguishes a viewport screenshot, which captures what is currently visible, from Capture a full size screenshot, which includes content outside the viewport. The full-size command is a developer-tool workflow, not a standard macOS screenshot shortcut.
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Open DevTools. Chrome’s keyboard shortcut varies by operating system and configuration; use Chrome’s current menu or keyboard-shortcut reference if needed.
- Open the DevTools screenshot menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- Check the resulting image to confirm it includes the page content you need.
Chrome’s documentation describes the command and the difference between viewport and full-size capture. The exact DevTools menu placement can change between versions, so use the current Chrome interface if its labels differ.

What Safari can do: inspect, archive, or save source
Inspect a webpage
Safari’s Web Inspector lets you examine webpage resources and behavior; it is not, by itself, a documented full-page image capture workflow. Apple documents opening it with Develop > Show Web Inspector or the Option-Command-I shortcut. You can also control-click a webpage and choose Inspect Element.
Enable Safari developer features
- In Safari, open Settings.
- Choose Advanced.
- Enable Show features for web developers to expose developer tools.
Apple notes that developer features are off by default. The exact wording may differ across macOS and Safari versions.

Save a Web Archive or Page Source
- In Safari, open the webpage and choose File > Save As.
- Select Web Archive to save the page with graphics and links, or Page Source to save its HTML.
- Save the file where you can find it.
Some webpages may prevent items from being saved. A Web Archive is not a screenshot image, and Page Source is not a rendered view of the page. Apple documents these formats in its Safari 26.0 guide for macOS 26.

Why the macOS screenshot shortcut is not enough
A standard screenshot captures the screen area or window shown at the time. A long page continues below the viewport, so a visible-window capture does not become a full-page screenshot just because the browser is displaying a webpage. Use Chrome’s documented full-size DevTools command when you need the entire rendered page as an image; choose Safari’s save formats when you need an archive or source instead.

If you capture full pages often
A third-party Safari extension may offer a separate scrolling-capture workflow. For example, the Mac App Store listing for FireShot describes full-page, visible-part, and custom-selection capture modes for Safari. That is a vendor listing, not independent performance testing. Before installing an extension, check its current availability, permissions, and features for your Safari and macOS versions.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; you can turn each step off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting
- The Chrome image shows only what is on screen: You likely captured the viewport rather than the full page. In DevTools, choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- You cannot find Safari’s Develop menu: Open Safari Settings > Advanced and enable Show features for web developers. Labels may vary by version.
- You expected a Safari Web Archive to be an image: It is a saved-page format. Use a screenshot workflow when you need an image.
- A Safari save is incomplete: Apple notes that some webpages may prevent items from being saved. Try another supported format if appropriate, or use a screenshot workflow for a visual record.
- A Safari extension’s capture mode is missing or behaves differently: Check its current listing, permissions, and compatibility for your browser and macOS version; the listing’s feature description is not an independent test.
