Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secretary general Balwinder Singh Bhundar said on October 1, 2026, that the party was not holding alliance talks with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He explicitly left open what might happen later, so his remarks were not an irrevocable rejection of a future alliance.
What Bhundar said about SAD and the BJP
Speaking to media after a meeting chaired by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, Bhundar said, as quoted by Hindustan Times: “No talks of alliance are going on with the BJP but we do not know about the future.” His statement described the status of talks at that time; it did not rule out a later agreement.
SAD secretary Daljit Singh Cheema said the party had given the president authority over alliance matters: “Our party has given all rights for alliance to the (party) president,” according to the newspaper. Its account does not report a formal party decision barring future talks.
Why a possible reunion was being discussed
Speculation about a SAD-BJP reunion had circulated for months, according to Hindustan Times. It intensified after Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House in New Delhi on August 7, 2026. The newspaper described it as their first one-on-one political meeting since the parties ended their 23-year alliance in 2020 over farm laws. The reported meeting prompted speculation, but the report does not establish that alliance negotiations followed.

Bhundar’s comment on the wheat MSP increase
Bhundar also criticised a reported ₹25 increase in the wheat minimum support price (MSP), calling it meagre and saying it did not account for rising input costs. He reportedly described the increase as the lowest in absolute terms in 17 years. These are Bhundar’s assessments as reported by Hindustan Times; the newspaper account does not independently establish the historical comparison.
