Saber-Toothed Cats vs. Saber-Toothed Predators: What’s the Difference?

Smilodon was a saber-toothed cat, but saber-toothed predators also included unrelated mammals and non-mammalian synapsids.

A saber-toothed cat is one kind of saber-toothed predator: a member of the extinct cat subfamily Machairodontinae, which includes Smilodon. “Saber-toothed predator” is the broader descriptive term for animals from several unrelated lineages that evolved long, saber-like canine teeth. Similar teeth do not mean the animals were close relatives or hunted in the same way.

What’s the difference between saber-toothed cats and saber-toothed predators?

The difference is one of scope. “Saber-toothed cat” refers to a particular branch of the cat family: the extinct subfamily Machairodontinae. “Saber-toothed predator” describes a wider range of predatory animals whose canines developed a saber-like form, whether or not they were cats.

So every saber-toothed cat is a saber-toothed predator in the ordinary descriptive sense, but not every saber-toothed predator is a cat. The National Park Service identifies Smilodon as a machairodontine cat; the broader category includes animals from other mammalian groups and even some that were not mammals.

Which animals illustrate the distinction?

Animal or group How it fits
Smilodon A saber-toothed cat in the extinct subfamily Machairodontinae; the familiar example described by the National Park Service.
Nimravids Extinct saber-toothed predators outside the cat family. They are sometimes called “false saber-toothed cats,” but they were not felid cats.
Thylacosmilines Metatherian saber-toothed predators, distinct from felid cats.
Gorgonopsians Permian saber-toothed synapsids that lived outside Mammalia.

A comparative review in the Royal Society’s journal describes saber-tooth forms arising in metatherians, several eutherian groups—including nimravids, barbourofelids, and machairodontine felids—and gorgonopsians. The list is a reminder that the familiar tooth shape is not a single family tree.

Why did unrelated predators have similar teeth?

When similar features evolve independently in separate lineages, the pattern is called convergent evolution. Saber-like canines are an example: their resemblance does not establish that the animals shared a recent ancestor, had otherwise similar bodies, or captured prey in the same way.

The Royal Society comparison cautions that convergent skull and tooth shapes can conceal functional diversity among saber-toothed carnivores. It is therefore safer to discuss a particular animal’s anatomy or hunting interpretation on its own evidence than to assume that all saber-toothed predators behaved alike.

What does “saber-toothed tiger” mean?

“Saber-toothed tiger” is a familiar nickname for Smilodon, not a precise taxonomic label. In this comparison, “saber-toothed cat” is clearer: Smilodon belongs to the extinct cat subfamily Machairodontinae, not to the living tiger genus.

How quickly did Smilodon’s saber teeth grow?

The American Museum of Natural History reports that the saber teeth of Smilodon fatalis grew at about twice the rate of those of living relatives, yet still took years to fully emerge. The comparison is specific to S. fatalis; it should not be generalized to every saber-toothed predator. The source page does not state a publication year for this finding.
