The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the faster gaming CPU, but the 7800X3D can be the smarter buy if it costs substantially less. In TechSpot’s 2024 comparison, the 9800X3D averaged 8% faster across 45 games at 1080p with an RTX 4090. That is a result for a setup designed to expose CPU differences—not a guarantee of 8% more performance in every game or on every PC.
How the CPUs compare
Both are eight-core, 16-thread AM5 processors with 96 MB of L3 cache, a 120 W default TDP and support for DDR5 memory. The 9800X3D uses Zen 5; the 7800X3D uses Zen 4. Their listed clock speeds differ, while the core count, cache capacity and platform are the same.

Specifications are from AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D product page and Ryzen 7 7800X3D product page. AMD’s launch announcement describes 104 MB of total cache for the 9800X3D; that is a different figure from the 96 MB of L3 cache listed for each chip.
What the gaming benchmarks show
Independent comparison: an 8% average lead in a CPU-focused setup
TechSpot measured the 9800X3D as 8% faster on average than the 7800X3D across 45 games, using an RTX 4090 at 1080p in its 2024 review. That high-end GPU and low resolution help reveal CPU limits. The result is a useful comparison point, not a forecast for an individual game, resolution or graphics card. At higher resolutions or with a slower GPU, the graphics card is more likely to constrain performance and the difference between CPUs may shrink. Read TechSpot’s 9800X3D review.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
AMD’s launch-era results varied by game
AMD Performance Labs also claimed an average 8% generational gaming uplift over the 7800X3D at 1080p high settings in a guide tested in November 2024. Its selected results ranged from 1% in Cyberpunk 2077 to 26% in Hogwarts Legacy. The guide used a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, 2×16 GB DDR5-6000 memory and a GIGABYTE X670E AORUS MASTER motherboard. These are AMD’s own results, not independent measurements; the range underscores why an average should not be treated as a fixed gain for every title. See AMD’s competitive gaming guide.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the 9800X3D for a new high-end gaming build
If gaming performance is the priority, the 9800X3D is the stronger default when its current local price premium is acceptable. The independent 45-game average favors it, and the advantage is most relevant when your graphics card and settings leave room for the CPU to affect frame rates—for example, when targeting high frame rates at lower resolutions.

Choose the 7800X3D when the savings matter more
The 7800X3D remains a sensible gaming choice if it is meaningfully cheaper. It shares the newer chip’s core and thread count, L3 capacity, socket, memory class and published default TDP. The value decision depends on the live price gap in your region and your GPU, resolution and games; no current like-for-like prices or stock figures are established here. AMD announced a $479 suggested e-tail price for the 9800X3D on October 31, 2024, but that is a historical launch figure, not a current price. AMD’s October 31, 2024 announcement.

The benchmark evidence establishes an average lead in a particular 1080p, RTX 4090 test suite; it does not establish that every 7800X3D owner will notice a worthwhile improvement. An upgrade is most plausible if your own games are CPU-limited and the 9800X3D would help meet a frame-rate target you care about. If your GPU is already the limiting factor, replacing the CPU is less likely to change your gaming experience substantially.

Check the platform and cooler before buying
Both CPUs use AM5 and DDR5, but socket compatibility alone does not confirm that a particular motherboard is ready for a given processor. Check the motherboard maker’s CPU support list and the BIOS version required for the exact board. AMD lists no thermal solution in the box for either processor, so include a compatible cooler in the build budget. AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance on its product pages; that recommendation is not proof that every system requires liquid cooling. Confirm the chosen cooler’s compatibility and suitability for your build.
