Short answer: Ryobi ONE+ is the 18V cordless battery-and-tool platform; ONE+ HP is a higher-performance tool category inside that same platform. ONE+ HP models are identified by Ryobi as using brushless motors, advanced electronics and high-performance lithium technology. That can make an HP tool a sensible choice for frequent or demanding work, but the HP badge is not a universal guarantee of better value. Compare the exact models, included battery and charger, accessories, warranty and current price for the job you actually do.
Both names appear in Ryobi’s US ONE+ catalog. The platform dates to 1996 and is designed around battery compatibility across ONE+ products, while HP describes a subset of tools and their design approach. Ryobi’s official pages make performance claims for HP, but the available material does not provide a controlled, independent test showing one percentage improvement across every standard ONE+ and ONE+ HP tool.

What ONE+ and ONE+ HP actually mean
ONE+ is the battery platform
ONE+ is Ryobi’s 18V cordless ecosystem: batteries, chargers and tools built around the same platform. The company describes the system as dating back to 1996 and emphasizes compatibility across its product range. In practical terms, an existing ONE+ battery can make a tool-only purchase attractive because you may not need another charger or battery.

“ONE+” does not describe one motor, one battery capacity or one level of performance. A standard ONE+ drill, saw, inflator or garden tool can use different motor designs, gearboxes, controls and accessories. The platform name tells you primarily how the tool fits into the 18V system, not how powerful that individual model is.

ONE+ HP is a category within ONE+
ONE+ HP tools are still ONE+ tools. Ryobi presents HP as a series within the same 18V system, not as a separate voltage or incompatible battery format. The HP label signals a particular combination of motor, electronics and battery technology intended to deliver more capability than the company’s conventional offerings.
That distinction matters when you shop. “ONE+ versus ONE+ HP” is not a direct platform-versus-platform contest. It is more like comparing the regular tools in a platform with a premium-design tier inside that platform. The meaningful comparison is always model against model—for example, one specific standard drill against one specific HP drill.
How the two categories compare
| Comparison point | ONE+ | ONE+ HP | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| What the name identifies | Ryobi’s 18V cordless battery and tool platform | An HP tool category within the ONE+ platform | Explain the platform relationship before judging performance. |
| Battery system | Ryobi states that 18V ONE+ batteries work across ONE+ products | Presented as part of the same ONE+ system | Existing owners may be able to buy a bare tool; verify an older tool or battery combination if uncertain. |
| Motor and electronics | Varies by individual tool and model | Ryobi identifies brushless motors and advanced electronics | Do not assume every standard tool uses the same motor or controls. |
| Battery technology | Varies by product and kit | Ryobi cites high-performance lithium technology as part of HP | Read the exact battery label and kit contents; “HP” does not tell you the battery’s amp-hour capacity. |
| Performance language | Depends on the product | Ryobi claims greater power and speed, optimized runtime and more work per charge | These are manufacturer positioning statements, not independent cross-catalog test results. |
| Best buying method | Choose the model that meets the task at the lowest sensible total cost | Consider when the HP design and claimed performance fit frequent or demanding work | Compare specific models, price and included equipment rather than the badge alone. |
Ryobi’s official US collection describes HP as delivering “more power, runtime, and durability through high performance brushless motors, advanced electronics and high performance lithium technology.” Its ONE+ category page similarly says the HP Brushless Series offers greater power and speed, longer runtimes and more work per charge. Those statements should be read as Ryobi’s description of its technology and intended benefits. They are not a promise that every HP model will outperform every standard model in every task.

Ryobi positions HP tools inside the ONE+ battery system, so an 18V ONE+ battery is the relevant battery family for an HP tool. The major benefit is system continuity: someone who already owns compatible ONE+ batteries can often select a tool-only version instead of paying for another battery and charger.
Compatibility is a system-level statement, not permission to ignore the manual. Before using an older battery with a newer tool, check the tool’s instructions and the battery’s documentation. Confirm that the battery is a genuine 18V ONE+ model, that it locks into the tool correctly and that the charger is approved for that battery. If a listing specifies a particular battery type or warns against an older pack, follow that instruction.

- New to the system: Compare a complete kit with a tool-only listing plus a separate battery and charger. The lowest sticker price is not necessarily the lowest complete setup cost.
- Unsure about a legacy combination: Use the exact model numbers in the current manual or contact Ryobi support before buying. “ONE+” on two boxes is not a substitute for checking an unusual or very old combination.
What HP’s brushless design changes
Brushless motors
Ryobi identifies brushless motors as a defining HP feature. In a brushless motor, electronic controls replace the mechanical brushes used in a brushed design. That architecture can reduce a wear component and allows the control electronics to regulate power more precisely. The practical result depends on the tool: a drill, circular saw and blower place different demands on a motor and may use different control strategies.
Brushless construction alone does not establish a universal runtime, torque or lifespan advantage. Those outcomes also depend on the battery’s capacity, the load, gearing, thermal limits, accessory, material and the operator. Treat the motor description as a design characteristic, then evaluate the exact tool’s specifications and reviews.
Advanced electronics
Ryobi includes advanced electronics in its HP description. Electronics can manage how power is delivered, protect the battery and motor, and coordinate speed or load response. Again, the label does not disclose a single standardized circuit or a guaranteed performance number across the range. Two HP tools can have different controls because their applications are different.
High-performance lithium technology
HP also references high-performance lithium technology. Battery chemistry and pack construction affect current delivery, heat management and usable runtime, but “HP” does not state the amp-hour rating of the battery included in a kit—or whether a battery is included at all. Always read the listing for the battery model and capacity.
When ONE+ HP is worth considering
Frequent, high-load work
If you routinely drill large holes, drive long fasteners, cut dense stock or run a tool for extended periods, an HP model’s brushless design and electronic controls may be relevant. The potential benefits are most useful when the tool spends substantial time under load, rather than sitting in a drawer for occasional repairs.

Choose based on the application’s actual demands. A compact HP drill may be preferable for repeated construction work, while a standard tool may be entirely adequate for assembling furniture or hanging shelves. The name cannot tell you the right chuck size, speed range, cutting capacity or ergonomics.
Longer sessions where heat and downtime matter
Ryobi positions HP for optimized runtime and more work per charge. If changing batteries interrupts your work, compare the exact HP kit’s battery capacity with the standard kit’s capacity and consider buying an additional compatible pack. Runtime is not a fixed property of the tool: harder materials, larger accessories and higher speed can reduce it substantially.
Users building a long-term ONE+ collection
For a new buyer intending to add many tools over time, selecting HP for the high-demand tools can be a reasonable strategy while using standard ONE+ models for lighter jobs. This is a portfolio decision, not a rule that every tool should be HP. Spending more on a premium design where it will be used often can make more sense than upgrading rarely used tools.
When a standard ONE+ tool is the better buy
Light or occasional tasks
For infrequent household maintenance, a standard ONE+ model may provide all the capability you need. If the work does not push the motor hard or run for long periods, the HP features may deliver little practical benefit compared with the additional purchase cost.
You already have suitable batteries
A standard bare tool can be the lowest-cost way to add a capability to an existing collection. Compare the tool-only price with the HP equivalent and ask whether the performance difference matters for your use. The money saved can instead fund another tool, a second battery or the accessory your project actually requires.

The standard model has the better fit
Model-specific details can outweigh the family label. A standard tool with the right speed range, lighter weight, better sightlines or a more suitable accessory interface may serve you better than an HP tool that is more powerful but less comfortable or less appropriate for the task.
A step-by-step way to choose
- List the job, material and duty cycle. Note whether you are drilling masonry, driving structural screws, cutting lumber, trimming a hedge or doing occasional assembly. Estimate how long the tool will run and how hard it will be loaded.
- Check your existing batteries. Record each battery’s model and amp-hour rating, and confirm its condition. A worn pack can make a capable tool appear weak or short-lived.
- Pick comparable tool types. Compare a drill with a drill, not a drill with a hammer drill; compare similarly sized saws or blowers. Write down the exact model numbers so you do not confuse a kit with a bare tool.
- Read the specifications that affect your task. Look for chuck or blade size, speed range, impact rate, cutting capacity, torque information where supplied, weight without and with a battery, and included controls or modes.
- Separate design claims from measured evidence. HP’s brushless motor and electronics are product attributes. Claims of more power, runtime or durability come from Ryobi; do not turn them into a universal percentage improvement.
- Calculate the complete purchase. Add the tool, battery, charger, required accessories and any case. Compare tool-only and kit listings on the same date because catalog contents and prices change.
- Check service and warranty terms. Confirm the warranty for the exact model and sales region, and keep the receipt and model number. Availability and listing details can change between the catalog and a retailer.
- Choose HP only when the use case justifies it. If the job is demanding or frequent and the HP model’s specifications fit, the premium may be sensible. Otherwise, a standard ONE+ model can be the more economical choice.
Current HP example: PBLDD02B drill/driver
Ryobi’s US ONE+ collection currently lists the 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 1/2-inch Drill/Driver, model PBLDD02B. The collection presents it as a tool-only product and also shows standard ONE+ tools and HP kits. That makes PBLDD02B a useful example of what the HP label looks like in the catalog, but it is not a controlled comparison with a named standard ONE+ drill.
If you are considering this model, verify the live listing before ordering: confirm that it is still tool-only, check the included accessories, and compare the current price with a complete kit. Retailer inventory and catalog contents can change. The official collection is Ryobi’s 18V ONE+ collection.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming HP is a universal upgrade
HP is a category, not a guarantee that every HP tool beats every standard ONE+ tool in torque, runtime, durability or comfort. Avoid a blanket upgrade decision. Match the exact models and the job.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuying a bare tool without a battery plan
A tool-only price can look attractive until you discover that you also need a battery and charger. Conversely, buying another battery when you already own suitable packs wastes money and storage space. Make a complete inventory before checkout.

Comparing unlike tools
A compact drill/driver and a high-torque hammer drill may both be described as drills, but they serve different work. Compare the functions, capacities and controls that your project requires.
Ignoring battery condition
Runtime depends on the pack as well as the tool. If an old battery drops voltage quickly or becomes unusually hot, test with a known-good compatible pack before blaming the motor. Replace damaged, swollen or leaking batteries according to the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Relying on an old listing
Ryobi’s catalog is volatile. Model availability, kit contents and pricing can change, and a retailer may show a different configuration from the manufacturer’s collection. Save the exact model number and verify the current listing, warranty and return policy.

Quick Recap
Bottom-line decision
- Choose standard ONE+ when you need an affordable tool for light or occasional work, already have compatible batteries, or find that the standard model has the better size and feature fit.
- Choose ONE+ HP when you expect frequent or demanding use and the specific HP model’s brushless design, controls, capacity and kit contents justify its price.
- Choose by model, not label whenever the difference is close. Verify battery compatibility, included equipment, warranty, current price and seller before ordering.
