Ryobi EDGE batteries are most likely worth considering if a compatible tool bogs down during demanding work or you need longer stretches between battery swaps. The clearest comparative evidence available is for three high-draw 18V tool tasks: a Pro Tool Reviews article reported that a 4Ah EDGE pack finished each faster than the comparison packs in Ryobi internal testing. That does not prove the same gains in every tool, and the advertised power and runtime multipliers are Ryobi claims, not universal guarantees. For light-duty use, an existing battery that already gets the job done may be the better value.
What makes a Ryobi EDGE battery different?
Ryobi describes EDGE as a battery design built around tabless cells, IntelliCell electronics and COOL-CORE PRO heat management. The company says tabless cells improve the energy-transfer path compared with conventional cells that use tabs. Its 18V product pages also describe heat sinks and laser-welded cell straps for thermal management. These are manufacturer descriptions of the design and its intended benefits, rather than independent findings about how every tool will perform.

EDGE is available in both Ryobi 18V ONE+ and 40V families. Capacity, voltage family and model matter: a higher-capacity pack can provide more stored energy, but 18V and 40V batteries are separate systems, not interchangeable choices.
Do EDGE batteries give more power, more runtime, or both?
Ryobi advertises both power and runtime improvements, but the claimed multipliers vary by model. The figures below are claims on Ryobi product pages accessed October 4, 2026; the pages do not provide enough information about comparison baselines and test protocols to treat these as guaranteed results in every tool.

- Stens replacement parts have become a favorite among lawn and landscape professionals thanks to exceptional performance.
| Battery model | Platform and capacity | Ryobi’s stated claim |
|---|---|---|
| PBP1104 | 18V ONE+, 4Ah | 2X more power and 4X more runtime |
| PBP1108 | 18V ONE+, 8Ah | 2X more power and 8X more runtime |
| PBP1112 | 18V ONE+, 12Ah | 2X more power and 10X more runtime |
| OP40406TA | 40V, 4Ah | 2X more power and 4X more runtime |
| OP40806TA | 40V, 8Ah | 6X more power and 6X more runtime |
Ryobi also says selected EDGE models run 25% cooler and live 50% longer. Those are manufacturer claims; the sources here do not establish an independently measured lifespan improvement. Runtime and power are different considerations: capacity is relevant to how long a tool can run, while performance under load depends on the battery and tool working together.
What do the reported 18V tool comparisons show?
Kenny Koehler’s Pro Tool Reviews article, published September 3, 2024, describes comparisons based on Ryobi internal testing. It reports three demanding 18V tool tests. In each, the 4Ah EDGE result was the fastest of the listed battery options, but the results are not a guarantee for other tools or tasks.

| Reported task | 4Ah | 4Ah High Performance | 8Ah High Performance | 4Ah High Performance EDGE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6½-inch HP brushless compact circular saw cutting two stacked sheets of ¾-inch OSB | 19.4 sec | 16.2 sec | 12.5 sec | 12.0 sec |
| 12-inch HP brushless chainsaw cutting a 10-inch log | 25.15 sec | 23.23 sec | 20.02 sec | 19.81 sec |
| HP brushless ½-inch hammer drill using a 2-inch self-feed bit in 2× white pine | 12.67 sec | 9.92 sec | 8.34 sec | 7.92 sec |
These are times reported by Pro Tool Reviews from Ryobi’s internal testing, not independent testing by that publication. The comparisons support a possible advantage in the specific high-demand 18V tasks shown; they do not establish how much faster an EDGE pack will be in a reader’s tool. The cited article does not give a comparable 40V test, so the 18V results should not be carried over to 40V models.

Ryobi says its 18V ONE+ batteries work with Ryobi 18V ONE+ products, and its 40V batteries work with Ryobi 40V products. That stated compatibility applies within each named voltage family; it does not mean an 18V battery works in a 40V tool, or vice versa. Check the voltage platform shown on your tool and the exact battery product guidance before buying, especially if the tool is older or its labeling is unclear.

How fast do EDGE batteries charge?
Ryobi advertises charge-to-80% times for its 18V models when they are paired with the company’s fastest ONE+ charger, which is sold separately. These are conditional manufacturer figures, not a promise for every charger or charging situation.
- 18V 4Ah PBP1104: as little as 15 minutes to 80%.
- 18V 8Ah PBP1108: as little as 35 minutes to 80%.
- 18V 12Ah PBP1112: as little as 55 minutes to 80%.
The 40V product pages reviewed say fast charging but do not supply a comparable exact time in the captured information.

How to decide whether EDGE is worth the price
Start with your existing platform and workload rather than the biggest multiplier on a product page. EDGE is a more plausible upgrade for a tool that draws heavily on its battery than for occasional light-duty use where your current pack already lasts long enough.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Match your voltage family. Confirm whether your tool is 18V ONE+ or 40V; compare batteries only within that system.
- Identify the problem you want to solve. If the tool bogs, cuts slowly under load, trips a cutoff, or forces frequent pack changes, an EDGE battery may address a real need. If none of those is happening, the practical gain may be small.
- Choose capacity for the job. A larger Ah rating may better suit longer work between charges, but it is not automatically the best choice if extra battery mass or handling matters. The available comparisons do not establish pack weights.
- Compare the actual alternatives and current price. Consider an EDGE pack against another standard battery or a second pack for your workload; do not assume the advertised multiplier will translate directly to your tool.
- Include charging needs. If quick 18V charge-to-80% performance matters, factor in the required fastest ONE+ charger, sold separately.
At retrieval on October 4, 2026, Ryobi’s indexed collection displayed the 18V 4Ah PBP1104 at $129, while Ryobi’s product page and The Home Depot listing displayed $329 for the 40V 8Ah OP40806TA. These are time-sensitive price snapshots, not lasting price guidance; check current price and stock before making a purchase.

Which EDGE battery should you consider?
Choose only after matching the model to your platform and intended use. The 4Ah 18V model is the capacity used in the reported EDGE tool comparisons; the available evidence does not say that a larger pack will produce the same task times. For a 40V tool, choose among 40V batteries based on the runtime you need and current cost, not the 18V comparison results.
Quick Recap
- For a compatible 18V tool and a demanding task: the Ryobi 18V ONE+ EDGE 4Ah PBP1104 is the EDGE pack represented in the three reported comparisons.
- For a compatible 18V tool and longer runtime between changes: consider the 8Ah PBP1108 or 12Ah PBP1112, weighing their capacity against price and handling.
- For a compatible 40V tool: compare the 4Ah OP40406TA and 8Ah OP40806TA by the runtime you need and current price. The sources reviewed do not provide a 40V comparative task test.
