If your RV park website gets visitors but few confirmed reservations, the cause could be anywhere between the first page and the booking confirmation. Audit that path in order: make the park and booking action clear, help guests choose a suitable site, test the reservation handoff, then compare booking data with reservation records. Without access to a specific park’s site and data, no one can identify its actual failure point—but this checklist helps you find where to investigate.
1. Check whether visitors can understand the offer and start booking
Begin with the first screen on desktop and mobile. A new visitor should be able to tell where the park is, what kind of camping it offers, and how to check availability or reserve. Campground website guidance emphasizes clear location and lodging information, a visible booking route, and mobile usability; treat these as practical checks, not proof that any one design choice will raise bookings. Campground Management’s website guidance and BlueSpot Connect’s navigation recommendations offer further context.

- Can a visitor identify the park’s location and the type of camping available without searching through several pages?
- Is the booking action visible and specific, such as checking dates or availability, rather than buried in general navigation?
- On a phone, can a guest start a reservation without awkward scrolling, tiny controls, or menus that conceal the next step?
- Do the main pages for different accommodation types or seasons lead guests toward relevant booking options?
These checks identify possible friction; they do not establish that a confusing first screen is the reason a particular park has few bookings. Record what a visitor has to do and where uncertainty arises before changing the design.

Guests need enough information to choose a site that fits their trip. Review each site or accommodation description, its photos, relevant dimensions and hookup details, rates, and availability. Check that guests can understand what is included and how options differ before they reach checkout.

RMS’s 2026 State of the Outdoor Accommodation Report says 85% of surveyed campers were more likely to book when they could choose their exact site in advance. The survey covered 1,500 campers across the US, UK, and Australia/New Zealand. This is a preference reported by that survey population—not proof that exact-site selection alone will improve conversion at a particular park. It does make site-choice clarity a sensible point to audit. Read the RMS report.
- Do site names and descriptions explain meaningful differences, rather than relying on labels guests may not understand?
- Can guests find fit information they need, such as hookups or site dimensions, where those details apply?
- Do photos represent the site or accommodation being selected and help guests distinguish options?
- Are rates, date-dependent differences, and availability easy to understand before the guest commits?
- If exact-site choice is available, is it apparent how to select and confirm a specific site?
RMS also reports that 64% of its surveyed campers discovered campsites through online search, which overtook word of mouth in that survey. That finding concerns discovery, not checkout performance, and should not be generalized to all campers. It supports checking whether search visitors land on a relevant page that clearly presents the park and its booking route—not assuming that more search traffic will repair a confusing reservation flow. RMS’s 2026 report describes the survey and its geographies.

3. Follow the reservation handoff all the way to confirmation
Start a test reservation as a guest would, using a date range and accommodation type the park actually offers. Follow the path from the park website into the reservation engine and through the steps leading to confirmation. A separate booking engine can complicate marketing attribution, so inspect both the guest experience and whether the visit’s source information survives the handoff. Campground Consulting Group’s 2026 tracking guide discusses this attribution challenge.
- From the park’s website, open the booking route and check that the engine reflects the park and the dates or accommodation type selected, where those choices are carried over.
- Check that the guest can see current availability and rates for the selected dates, then identify the next action at each step.
- Continue through the reservation process far enough to confirm how guests reach a completed booking, using an appropriate test method that does not create an unintended live reservation.
- Note transitions that change the site’s appearance or context, require guests to re-enter information, or make it unclear whether they are still booking with the park.
- Verify with the people responsible for analytics and reservations whether source and campaign details persist through a completed reservation in the external engine.
Do not treat a smooth-looking handoff as proof that tracking works, or a different-looking engine as proof that it does not. Confirm the tracking path with analytics and reservation records. Industry commentary on booking confidence is available in the National Campground Association’s November 2025 newsletter, “The Psychology of Online Booking”.

4. Reconcile website activity with actual reservations
Use the same date range to compare activity at each meaningful stage. The purpose is to locate discrepancies worth investigating, not to assume the website caused them.
- Website sessions, including the landing pages visitors enter on.
- Booking starts, if that event is measured consistently.
- Completed online reservations recorded in the booking system.
- Reservations made by phone, so online totals are not mistaken for all bookings.
- Available source and campaign attribution for completed reservations.
Ask whether the counts use compatible date ranges and definitions. For example, a website session and a reservation may be recorded on different dates, and an external engine may not pass the original source through to the final booking record. Investigate gaps with the people who manage the analytics and reservation systems; a mismatch is a clue, not a conversion diagnosis.

Keep the scope of any industry comparison in view. RoverPass says its reservation data reflects activity on its own platform rather than the entire US campground industry. Its reports can describe that platform, but they cannot establish a universal benchmark for an individual park. See RoverPass’s report index.

5. Fix the largest verified friction point first
Prioritize issues you have actually observed: an unclear booking action, missing site information, a failed transition, or incomplete attribution. Make one focused change at a time where practical, then compare the same measures over comparable periods and dates. Seasonality, availability, and differences in traffic can affect the comparison, so do not attribute a change in reservations to a website update without evidence that supports it.

A platform change may be worth evaluating if the existing booking path cannot meet a documented need. Compare the capabilities that matter to the audit: mobile completion, live availability and rates, exact-site selection, site descriptions and photos, integration with the park’s website, and source tracking through a confirmed reservation. Vendor feature descriptions show what a provider says its product can do; they do not prove conversion results or establish which provider is right for a particular park. Campspot’s API announcement, for example, dates to July 7, 2022; it establishes what the company announced then, not current availability or terms. Read the announcement.
Keep discovery and direct-booking conversion as separate decisions. A listing or marketplace may be one part of a channel mix, but it is not a substitute for making the park’s own website and reservation path understandable. RMS CEO Adam Seskis said, “Camping remains incredibly resilient, but guest expectations are evolving quickly,” on the 2026 report page. For an operator, the practical response is to verify where guests encounter friction before investing in a new channel or replacing the booking system.
