What happened to Kyiv’s bridges
Reports published Oct. 2–3 describe repeated strikes on the Southern Bridge (Pivdennyi) beginning Oct. 1, followed by damage and interruptions affecting other crossings. On Oct. 2, the Associated Press reported full or partial closures of three of Kyiv’s six road bridges over the Dnipro. Early on Oct. 3, the Northern Bridge (Pivnichnyi) was struck, according to AP; traffic was suspended after damage to the road surface and trolleybus cables.

These are reports of damage and interrupted traffic, not a confirmed bridge collapse. The bridges connect Kyiv’s east and west banks, so restrictions can disrupt journeys across the river even when a crossing remains physically standing.

What damage was reported
Southern Bridge (Pivdennyi)
Euronews, citing city officials, reported damage to a pier, road surface, barrier and protective concrete structure around the metro line. The bridge carries road traffic and metro service. The reporting does not establish that metro service was suspended or that the bridge collapsed.

AP reported damage to the road surface and overhead trolleybus cables after the Oct. 3 strike, with traffic suspended. The Kyiv Independent also reported the strike and restrictions. Neither account establishes a collapse.
Other crossings
AP’s Oct. 2 report counted full or partial closures of three of the city’s six road bridges, but the available accounts do not provide a complete bridge-by-bridge inventory of those restrictions. City authorities’ restrictions during air-raid alerts, as reported by The Kyiv Independent, included temporary directional controls or complete stops on specific bridges during the first 15 minutes of an alert. Those alert procedures are not live directions, and the reports do not confirm current bridge access.

How the restrictions affected travel
Closures and restrictions sent drivers toward alternate routes and caused severe congestion. AP quoted Kyiv resident Oleksandr Pihalo saying, “It’s a total mess on the road today.” He said a trip of 4 kilometers (2½ miles) took him 45 minutes. That is one person’s reported journey, not a citywide average or a current travel-time estimate.

Reuters reported that before Russia’s 2022 invasion, over a third of Kyiv’s 3 million residents lived on the eastern bank, while most government institutions and companies were on the western bank. Economic analyst Andriy Shevchishin estimated that about 500,000 people commute from the left bank to the right each day, Reuters reported in 2026. That is an attributed estimate; Reuters’ account does not provide a methodology, and it should not be read as a verified count of present-day commuters.

What is known about the purpose of the strikes
Intent remains unverified in the reported accounts. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the Northern Bridge was used to facilitate troop movement and military cargo deliveries, as reported by AP. That is the Russian government’s stated rationale, not an independently established finding.
Kostiantyn Kryvolap, an aviation expert and former Antonov test engineer, told The Kyiv Independent that destroying a bridge with a 50-kilogram explosive charge was “practically impossible,” and described the strikes as “more like mosquito bites.” He argued that disruption, interruption of logistics and psychological pressure could be the objective rather than destruction of the bridge. These are his interpretations; the reports do not independently resolve the purpose of the attacks.

What the reports do—and do not—establish
- Reported: Strikes, damage and traffic restrictions affected Kyiv crossings between Oct. 1 and 3, with the Southern and Northern bridges central to coverage.
- Reported: Damage included road surfaces, a pier, trolleybus cables and a protective structure around the metro line.
- Not confirmed: A collapse of either bridge, or the current status of any crossing after the cited reports.
- Casualties: Accounts conflict. AP and Reuters said no casualties were reported for the Northern Bridge incident at their publication times on Oct. 3; a Kyiv Independent update reported two people injured. The figure was unsettled in the available reports.
