An agent fleet can help run your companies’ software when multiple agents take on bounded, separable jobs and a coordinator checks their work. The safe starting point is not one powerful agent with access everywhere: give each workflow a clear owner, give each agent only the identity and tools it needs, isolate companies’ data and credentials, and make consequential actions reviewable and interruptible.
What an agent fleet does—and what it does not
Here, an agent fleet means multiple agents that can use tools and company systems, supported by some shared coordination or operational layer. A coordinator can assign separate tasks to agents with distinct contexts, then collect and synthesize their results. OpenAI’s September 10, 2026 Agents API announcement describes parallel subagents and a main agent coordinating their work. Anthropic’s Managed Agents documentation describes parallelization, specialization, and escalation as patterns for complex tasks.

That arrangement can increase coverage or let different agents use different tools, but it does not guarantee better answers. The coordinator still needs to check results, resolve disagreements, and determine which outputs may cause real-world side effects. Start with one bounded workflow; split it only when the work is genuinely separable, calls for different expertise or tools, or benefits from independent validation.

Decide whether a workflow needs multiple agents
Use multiple agents when they can work independently—for example, reviewing separate components, investigating different sources, or applying distinct domain checks before a coordinator synthesizes the findings. A specialized agent can also be useful when a job needs its own tools or instructions. Anthropic’s documentation identifies parallelization, specialization, and escalation as useful multi-agent patterns.

Keep the work with one agent when it is tightly sequential, small, or straightforward to validate. Extra agents add coordination and review work; they do not remove the need for a responsible person or system to make the final decision.
Set boundaries before connecting company software
Define the job and its side effects
For each workflow, document its business owner, inputs, expected output, and the actions it may take. Distinguish read-only research or analysis from actions that update records, message people outside the company, spend money, change access, or deploy software. For consequential actions, provide an approval, rejection, pause, or override path. Google Cloud’s multi-agent guidance recommends human oversight for business-critical systems where agents may fail or choose inappropriate tools.
Give each company its own trust boundary
Treat each company or business unit as a distinct trust boundary. Scope its agent identities, runtime, credentials, tools, and data to the organization’s security and legal requirements. Centralize policy enforcement and operational visibility where useful, but do not substitute one shared, broadly privileged agent identity for company-specific access controls.

Google Cloud’s June 18, 2026 multi-tenant reference architecture illustrates one implementation pattern: a central governance and security hub alongside tenant projects with their own agent runtimes and data stores. A separate project alone does not guarantee isolation. Identity configuration, network paths, secrets, data stores, logging, and deployment choices all affect the actual boundary.
Constrain identities, tools, and communication
Give each agent an identity with the minimum permissions needed for its assigned job. Authorize tool and data connections deliberately, and use isolated execution environments when an agent can run code or manipulate files. Record tool calls and outcomes so an operator can reconstruct what happened. Google Cloud’s guidance calls for least-privilege IAM and traces that expose actions, tool choices, and execution paths; its Agent Platform overview also describes unique agent identities and centralized tool governance.
Handle untrusted content as a security risk. Google Cloud’s multi-agent guidance discusses inspecting and sanitizing inputs and outputs, protecting sensitive data, and securing agent-to-agent communication. It says the A2A protocol requires HTTPS in production and recommends TLS 1.2 or higher; check current protocol and platform requirements before implementing a specific configuration.

Use a coordinator and make delegation explicit
Keep one component or operator responsible for assignments, progress, synthesis, and escalation. Give each specialist a bounded task, the context it needs, and a defined output format. The coordinator should know when to request another check or ask a person to resolve uncertainty; it should not treat agent agreement as proof that a result is correct.

A coordinator can compare their findings and prepare a recommendation. Whether that recommendation may be merged or deployed is a separate permission decision: keep consequential steps behind an appropriate review gate.
Operate the fleet like production software
Version and evaluate changes
Version agent instructions, tool interfaces, and runtime configuration alongside application changes. Establish evaluation cases before expanding a workflow, including cases that test incorrect inputs, tool failures, conflicting results, and disallowed actions. Monitor live behavior against those checks and ensure an operator can inspect traces and pause a failing workflow.

Plan for long-running work and recovery
Work that spans multiple steps or outlasts one interaction needs a plan for interruptions, retries, and retained context. OpenAI’s September 10, 2026 announcement presents durable sessions, context handling, and recovery as part of its long-running agent harness. Google Cloud’s Agent Platform overview lists managed runtimes, sessions, identities, evaluation, and observability as platform capabilities to assess. These features do not by themselves establish that a platform satisfies a company’s reliability or security requirements.
Keep human control and platform responsibility clear
Define who can approve, override, pause, and resume each business-critical workflow, and make those controls usable when an agent is in progress. Google Cloud’s guidance describes security as a shared responsibility: a provider secures underlying infrastructure and supplies controls, while customers must configure services, access controls, and applications appropriately.

| Decision area | Questions to ask | What the cited documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Execution and deployment | Where does the agent run? What files, network access, and secrets can it reach? | OpenAI’s September 10, 2026 Agents API announcement describes a public beta and a durable session and orchestration layer. Its announcement quotes Nash.ai co-founder and CTO Aziz Alghunaim describing Nash’s tools and execution environment connecting agents to logistics operations. That is a vendor-published customer testimonial, not independently audited performance evidence. |
| Tenant and data isolation | Can you establish distinct identities, environments, data stores, and policy boundaries for each company? | Google Cloud’s June 18, 2026 hub-and-spoke reference architecture describes centralized governance with isolated tenant projects, runtimes, and data stores. This is one cloud implementation pattern, not a guarantee that a project boundary alone provides full isolation. |
| Durability and recovery | How are sessions, long-running jobs, interruptions, and retries handled? | OpenAI’s announcement discusses durable sessions and recovery; Google Cloud’s Agent Platform overview lists sessions and managed runtimes. The descriptions are capabilities to evaluate, not proof of fit for a specific workload. |
| Access governance | Can administrators assign permissions per agent and govern tool connections centrally? | Google Cloud’s guidance describes least-privilege IAM; its Agent Platform overview describes unique agent identities and centralized tool governance. |
| Observability and evaluation | Can operators trace actions, evaluate quality, investigate failures, and pause work? | Google Cloud’s multi-agent guidance describes traces of actions, tool choices, and execution paths; its Agent Platform overview lists evaluation and observability. |
| Integration and operating burden | How well does the option fit existing business software, identity, logging, network, and deployment practices? | This is a comparison criterion derived from the architecture requirements, not a measured vendor ranking. |
Anthropic’s documentation labels Managed Agents as beta and lists a beta header. Availability and requirements can change. Google Cloud’s older multi-agent reference architecture was last reviewed September 16, 2025, so verify current service names and security guidance before relying on its implementation details.
Read safety disclosures with their limits in mind
The MIT AI Agent Index, published in the FAccT ’26 proceedings under the title 2025 AI Agent Index, analyzed 30 systems. In that sample, 25 of 30 studied agents disclosed no internal safety results, 23 of 30 had no third-party testing information, and 8 of 30 had known incidents or reported security concerns. These are counts for the Index’s 30-agent sample, not population-wide rates. The Index says documented incidents concentrated in browser agents and related to prompt injection. Disclosure gaps do not establish that an agent is unsafe, but they do limit what a buyer can verify from public evidence.
Use those findings as a reason to ask vendors for relevant safety, testing, and incident information, then test your own workflow against its risks. Do not treat a platform feature list or published architecture as a substitute for operational controls.
