Running solo gives you more control over your schedule, route, pace, and attention; a club can add a recurring appointment, social support, and shared training. Choose the format that suits the purpose of each session—and mix the two if that works best for you.
What changes when you run alone or with a club?
| Factor | Running alone | Running with a club |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule and route | You choose when and where to run. | You may need to work around a group’s meeting time and route. |
| Pace and workout | You can follow your own pace and session plan without adapting to other runners. | A group may offer a shared workout or pace options, but those features vary by club and should be checked locally. |
| Consistency | You are responsible for setting a routine and following through. | A recurring meetup and the expectation of seeing others may give you an additional reason to show up. |
| Social connection | You can run on your own while still being part of a wider running community. | You have direct contact with other runners during the session and may build relationships over time. |
| Pressure and fit | You avoid pressure to keep up with a group, though you may miss the structure of a shared session. | Differences in pace, goals, or preferred workout can make a group a poor fit unless it has suitable options. |
A club is not a guarantee of coaching, safety, or a suitable pace group. Ask what a particular club actually provides before treating those as benefits.

Does running with other people make you faster or make a run more enjoyable?
Not necessarily. In a randomized-order experiment involving 24 recreational runners—12 men and 12 women—participants ran alone, with a familiar peer, and with an unfamiliar peer. The researchers found no statistically significant effect of those social conditions on voluntary duration, distance, speed, enjoyment, or perceived exertion. This small controlled study tests the presence of one peer in particular conditions; it cannot settle what happens in every club, workout, or runner’s experience. Read the study record.

Other evidence links club membership or social support with running performance, but observational and cross-sectional designs cannot establish that the social connection caused a faster time. Those findings are not a promise that joining a club will improve your race result. See the London Marathon analysis and the study of training, social support, and performance.

Can a club help you run more consistently?
Social ties may help some runners maintain a routine and follow through on a goal. A three-wave panel study followed more than 800 first-time registrants for the 2019 Seven Hills Run in the Netherlands. Increases over time in the number of co-runners were related to increases in weekly running sessions. Event attendance was also positively related to having certain co-runners of equal or lower competence and people with whom participants discussed important matters. The authors concluded that social networks play an important role in maintaining consistent training and reaching goals such as taking part in a race. These are relationships found in a particular event-registration group, not proof that any club causes better adherence. Read the 2022 study, “Running Together: How Sports Partners Keep You Running”.
Online encouragement may work differently from meeting in person. In a study of 329 runners in five virtual Strava running clubs, receiving kudos for recorded activities was associated with running more and more often. That result concerns a particular platform and set of clubs; it does not mean an online group will motivate every runner. Read the virtual-club study.

Can you get community benefits while running solo?
Yes. Running on your own during a session does not necessarily mean running without community. A UK parkrun study found that social factors—including arriving or meeting with friends and family, spending time with others, and feeling integrated into and supported by the community—were positively associated with enjoyment, energy, and performance. Participants primarily reported running on their own. The finding distinguishes community context from having a partner beside you for the run; it is an association from a specific event setting, not a universal result. Read the parkrun study.
A survey of 539 running participants in Taiwan also found positive quality-of-life associations with social-capital dimensions such as collective action and social connections among respondents who ran alone as well as those who ran in groups. The survey reported demographic subgroup differences, so it does not establish a universal rule about which format benefits which people. Read the Taiwan survey.

How to choose the format for your next run
- Choose solo when your schedule is unpredictable, you want to control the route and pace, or you need to follow an individual workout without adjusting to others.
- Try a club session if a regular meetup, direct social connection, or shared structure might help you show up. Check whether the club’s pace and session match your needs rather than assuming it offers a suitable group or coaching.
- Keep the format flexible. You can run alone for sessions that need personal pacing and join a group when accountability or company is more valuable. There is no requirement to make every run social—or every run solo.
To test whether a club suits you, attend a session and notice whether its timing, pace, workout, and social atmosphere help you follow through. If it does not fit, running alone remains a valid choice; community can also come from connecting around events or other runners outside the session.
