Choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds if you want RuneScape lore, quests, named skills and practical magic in a high-fantasy survival game. Choose Valheim if you want a procedurally generated Norse world built around biome exploration, sailing, boss progression and expansive settlements. Both can be played solo or with friends, but their listed group sizes differ: Dragonwilds supports up to four players total, while Valheim’s Steam listing says one to ten. These recommendations follow the games’ published descriptions, not comparative playtesting.

How their survival loops differ

What to compare RuneScape: Dragonwilds Valheim
World and theme RuneScape fantasy lore set on Ashenfall, with creatures and references from the franchise. Jagex describes it as separate from the RuneScape MMORPG. Source: Jagex, September 15, 2026. A procedurally generated world inspired by Norse mythology and Viking culture. Source: Steam’s Valheim listing.
Progression Take quests, level skills, explore regions, learn and use spells, craft gear and shelters, and manage survival. Explore distinct biomes, gather resources, craft equipment and food, sail, build, and defeat regional Forsaken bosses to advance.
Magic and practical abilities Anima-rich magic is described as useful both in combat and in gathering resources. The listed loop emphasizes preparation through equipment and food, exploration, construction and boss fights rather than a spell-centered skill system.
Building and travel Craft gear and shelters; Jagex’s published overview emphasizes quests, skills and regional exploration. Build from shelters to villages or mountain fortresses, and sail between parts of the world.
Group size Solo or with up to three other players: four total. Steam lists one to ten players, including solo and online co-op.

Which game fits the way you want to play?

Choose Dragonwilds for RuneScape-style fantasy and skill progression

Dragonwilds is the more natural fit if familiar RuneScape creatures, lore and named skills are part of the appeal. Its published description connects quests and skill leveling with survival tasks: magic can help in combat and resource gathering, while crafting and shelter-building support exploration. Jagex names Zogres, Black Knights and Garou among the threats on Ashenfall. The game is a separate experience, not an expansion to the RuneScape MMORPG. Jagex’s launch announcement.

Choose Valheim for biome-led exploration, sailing and boss gates

Valheim suits players drawn to a broad Norse-inspired world where discovering biomes and their resources feeds into crafting, food preparation and regional boss fights. Sailing is part of the described exploration loop, and building can grow from a basic shelter into a settlement or fortress. Food is not just a collectible: Steam describes health and stamina benefits that help prepare for combat. Steam’s Valheim listing.

  • Rally the tribe: when the giants arrive, it takes a village to bring them down! Adventure through midgard solo, or form a tribe of up to 10 players in online pve co-op.
  • Keep up the fight: throughout the year, limited time seasonal events bring bigger challenges and even mightier treasures to the endgame of midgard, including new ways to progress and unlockable rewards for use across every game.

Use group size as a practical tie-breaker

Dragonwilds is described for solo play or groups of up to four; Valheim’s Steam listing gives a range of one to ten players. If your regular group has five or more people, Valheim’s published Steam player range is the clearer fit. For smaller groups, the choice depends more on which progression style and setting appeal to you.

Can you play Dragonwilds with friends on different platforms?

Yes. Jagex says Dragonwilds supports cross-play across its supported platforms. Its September 15, 2026 launch announcement lists PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, and says the console editions include the Early Access updates. Cross-play means players on supported platforms can play together; it does not establish cross-progression, save migration or every account-linking detail. Jagex’s launch announcement.

What the dated updates and storefront figures do—and don’t—tell you

Dragonwilds’ launch announcement says the game sold more than 1.5 million copies during its 18-month Steam Early Access period. That is Jagex’s reported figure, not an independent sales estimate. The announcement also said the Scorned Wilderness update concluded the opening Kuldra Saga and that “Luminance,” the first planned major post-launch update, was scheduled for December 2026. Treat that schedule and future roadmap details as time-sensitive. Jagex, September 15, 2026.

One example of Dragonwilds’ regional content comes from the June 23, 2026 Umbral Sands update announcement: it describes a new region and dynamic environmental system, the Fuzan boss and Fight Cave encounter, magic carpets, and Adamant, Red Dragonhide and Yew materials and gear. This is an example from a dated pre-1.0 update, not a complete inventory of the game’s launch content. Jagex, June 23, 2026.

Steam’s Valheim page showed 94% positive English reviews overall and 81% positive recent English reviews from 12,700 reviews in the last 30 days when accessed October 4, 2026. The recent and lifetime figures use different review samples and change over time; they are not a like-for-like quality comparison with Dragonwilds. Steam, accessed October 4, 2026.

Bottom line: pick the progression you want to live with

For RuneScape lore, quests, skills and magic woven into survival, pick Dragonwilds. For Norse biome exploration, sailing, boss-led advancement and larger settlement building, pick Valheim. If your decision hinges on a mixed-platform party, Dragonwilds has an explicit cross-play statement; for Valheim, verify the exact platform combination before purchase.
