Erasing TypeScript means removing type-only syntax so JavaScript can run; it does not check whether the types are correct. Whether you can run a .ts file directly depends on your runtime and whether the file uses TypeScript features that need JavaScript code generation.
What TypeScript erasure does
Type annotations describe values for developers and tools, but do not themselves provide runtime behavior. An erasure step removes those annotations and other type-only constructs, leaving the corresponding JavaScript program. For example, a declaration such as const count: number = 3; can become const count = 3;.

TypeScript 5.8 describes the requirement for Node’s strip-types mode as being able to “easily erase or ‘strip out’ any TypeScript-specific syntax from a file, leaving behind a valid JavaScript file.” TypeScript 5.8 release notes

Removing type syntax does not verify that your program obeys its declared types. Node.js states: “Node.js will replace TypeScript syntax with whitespace, and no type checking is performed.” Its whitespace-preserving approach strips syntax without emitting JavaScript behavior for it. To catch type errors, run TypeScript’s checker separately, for example with tsc --noEmit in a project configured for type-checking. Running a file with a type-stripping runtime and checking it with tsc are different jobs; one does not automatically perform the other.
Can you run a .ts file directly?
Yes, when the runtime supports TypeScript stripping and the file uses syntax that can be erased without generating JavaScript. Node.js v26.10.0 documents built-in type stripping as stable. The documentation records stability in v25.2.0 and v24.12.0, and default-enabled support in v23.6.0 and v22.18.0; behavior and availability should be judged against the Node version you actually use. For a compatible file, direct execution avoids a separate emitted JavaScript file. But Node’s built-in support is not a complete TypeScript compiler: it only handles syntax that does not require generating JavaScript, does not read tsconfig.json, and follows Node’s own module-system rules. If your code depends on compiler settings, transforms, or syntax outside that boundary, use a broader toolchain.
Rank #2
- TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
- TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

Erasure-only execution versus a full toolchain
| Workflow | Type-checking | Syntax and configuration | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Node.js built-in type stripping | No; run a checker separately. | Only syntax that can be erased without generating JavaScript. Does not read tsconfig.json. |
Small scripts or projects whose TypeScript syntax fits Node’s stripping limits and module rules. |
| TypeScript compiler or another transformer/build tool | tsc can check types as a separate operation. |
Can handle a broader set of syntax and project configuration, depending on the tool and setup. | Projects that need transforms, configured output, compatibility targets, or a build artifact. |
Third-party TypeScript runtime, such as tsx |
Do not assume runtime execution checks types; arrange a separate check. | Node’s documentation presents a third-party package as the route to full TypeScript support, including features and tsconfig.json. |
Running code that needs broader support without first invoking a separate compile command. |
Node’s documentation gives these examples for using tsx: npx tsx your-file.ts or node --import=tsx your-file.ts. The package is a runtime/tooling choice, not a feature of native stripping. Node.js TypeScript documentation
How to keep a project compatible with erasure-only Node
For projects intentionally targeting Node’s built-in stripping, Node recommends TypeScript 5.8 or newer with settings that make the boundary explicit. These are Node-specific recommendations, not universal defaults for every TypeScript project.

Enable
"erasableSyntaxOnly": true. Added in TypeScript 5.8, this option flags syntax that requires a transform rather than simple erasure. -
Enable

Run the TypeScript checker separately from Node execution. These configuration options help align source syntax with erasure-only execution; they do not turn Node’s stripping step into a type-checker.
Check the current TypeScript TSConfig reference when adapting settings to a project, since configuration choices depend on the project’s goals and toolchain.

Some constructs do more than describe types: they need corresponding JavaScript to preserve behavior. A stripping-only runtime cannot safely handle such syntax by deleting it, because doing so would change what the program does. This is the practical dividing line between erasure and transformation: if a feature requires generated JavaScript, use a compiler or runtime tool that supports that transformation.
Best Value
Node’s documentation describes full TypeScript support—including all syntax and features and tsconfig.json—as requiring a third-party package. A project that needs transformed output, configured compilation, or compatibility with a target beyond the runtime’s native behavior should use an appropriate build or runtime toolchain instead of assuming direct execution covers it.
Is TypeScript syntax becoming part of JavaScript?
Not on the basis of the TC39 Type Annotations proposal’s status in the linked repository: it is labeled Stage 1, a provisional proposal stage rather than an adopted JavaScript standard. Its status can change, so consult the TC39 Type Annotations proposal repository for the current stage. A proposal does not make TypeScript-specific syntax universally executable in JavaScript runtimes today.
