You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a Docker-hosted FFmpeg process by preparing compatible video files, configuring YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key, and keeping the container, source media, and network available. A loop option alone does not make a feed reliable: test playlist transitions in YouTube’s preview, monitor the process and stream separately, and plan for failures. This guide explains the setup without presenting an unverified command or Docker image as a tested deployment recipe.
What you need before building the stream
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. - An FFmpeg build with the demuxer, encoders, and output protocol your chosen workflow needs. Builds and options can differ, so check the documentation matching the installed version and its local help. FFmpeg documentation
- A host able to run Docker continuously, access the media files, and make outbound connections to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. This guide does not specify minimum CPU, memory, or network capacity; requirements depend on the media and encoding workload.
- An ordered playlist of files suitable for the chosen FFmpeg playlist method, plus a safe way to provide YouTube’s stream key to the container.
“24/7” describes the intended operating schedule, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Host, power, network, process, media, or platform failures can still interrupt the feed.

Configure YouTube’s live feed
Check eligibility and create or select the stream
- Open YouTube Studio and confirm the channel can livestream in Live Control Room. Resolve any verification or restriction issue before debugging FFmpeg.
- Create or select the stream settings in Studio. Copy the matching ingest URL and stream key for the selected protocol and stream. YouTube’s settings explain that a custom stream key can be reused. Manage live stream settings
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password: do not commit it to a public repository, bake it into a published container image, expose it in logs, or include it in a support request. Provide it to the runtime through a protected secret mechanism supported by your deployment environment.
YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveStream resource, which describes the encoder feed and ingest destination, from a liveBroadcast resource, which represents the event viewers watch. A persistent feed and a broadcast’s testing/live lifecycle are related but separate concepts; restarting an encoder does not inherently mean creating a new stream resource. An input playlist’s file format is a separate decision from the protocol used to send the finished stream to YouTube. For example, an .m3u8 input does not by itself mean YouTube HLS ingest is the right output.
Prepare an FFmpeg playlist that can be concatenated
Check file compatibility first
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text list of files and presents their packets successively as if they had been muxed together. For packet-level concatenation, inputs need the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Files exported from different sources may differ in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, codec, or time base; inspect and normalize them before relying on a long unattended sequence. If they are incompatible, re-encoding or a filter-based workflow may be needed, but the exact method depends on the files and is not specified here. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation
Build and validate the list
The concat demuxer uses one file directive per input. If you use its format header, the first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0. A conceptual list looks like this:

Watch timestamps and durations
The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each input follows the previous one. If audio and video streams have different lengths, gaps can occur. Missing or inaccurate duration estimates can create artifacts; where appropriate, the list can include a duration directive for a known, accurate duration. Make media available to the container
Docker-specific deployment details depend on your chosen host and configuration. At a minimum, the running container needs access to the playlist and every referenced media file, outbound network access to YouTube’s chosen ingest, and protected access to the stream credential. A bind mount or volume is a common way to make host media visible inside a container, but confirm the details against the Docker and host documentation for your setup. A container image alone does not include files stored only on your laptop unless you deliberately make them available.

Check your FFmpeg build before assembling a launch configuration. The FFmpeg command-line reference documents -stream_loop -1 as an infinite loop for one input; that is not, by itself, a verified Dockerized command for concatenating a playlist and publishing it. Test the feed before leaving it unattended
- Start with a short private or unlisted test stream using the actual container, mounted media, credential delivery, and output protocol you plan to use.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the preview receives video. Check audio, picture quality, and whether the transition from one playlist item to the next behaves as intended. YouTube recommends testing and checking the preview before going live. YouTube live streaming tips
- Watch the feed long enough to expose problems that a brief startup check will miss, such as timestamp jumps, silent transitions, or a process that exits after one item.
- Confirm that your host can see all source files and that the selected FFmpeg build supports the required demuxer, encoder, and output protocol. Check the local FFmpeg version/help and its matching documentation.
- Only after the test passes, switch to the intended broadcast settings and follow YouTube’s current Live Control Room steps to start the public stream.
Keep the stream operating and recover safely
A process restarting and YouTube receiving a healthy feed are different conditions. A Docker restart policy may relaunch a stopped process, but it cannot repair an invalid or revoked key, incompatible files, a broken network path, or a feed that sends no fresh frames. The reviewed Docker deployment material does not establish a specific restart configuration, so choose and verify one for your host rather than copying an assumed setting.
- Monitor both container/process health and the YouTube preview or stream status.
- Set an alert or scheduled check that can detect a stopped process, stale output, missing audio, or loss of ingest.
- Keep a recovery plan for host, power, network, source-file, credential, and YouTube-side problems; know who will respond if an alert fires.
- After a restart, confirm the feed is actually visible and advancing in Live Control Room instead of treating a running container as proof of success.

Before putting a playlist on a continuous public feed, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for every video and audio track. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your use case; do not assume that repeating or compiling material makes it eligible.
