The RTX 5090 is substantially faster than the RTX 5080 in the cited 4K tests, but its reference power rating is 215 W higher and NVIDIA recommends a 150 W larger system power supply. It also ran hotter in one Founders Edition full-load comparison. Those figures describe specific reference cards and tests—not every partner model or PC.

How much faster is the RTX 5090?
In GamersNexus’s 2025 Founders Edition comparison, the RTX 5090 was 30% to 68.9% faster than the RTX 5080 across the review’s 4K game tests. That broad range is the important qualification: the advantage depends on the game and settings, so it is not a fixed multiplier for every title or PC.

- In Final Fantasy XIV at 4K, the 5090 led by 62%.
- In Black Myth: Wukong at 4K, it led by 48%.
For an individual game, use that game’s result rather than applying the suite’s low or high end as a blanket estimate. The review’s results are launch-era tests of Founders Edition cards; later drivers, games, and partner-card designs may produce different outcomes. #1 Best Overall
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Power use: rated maximum versus measured draw
NVIDIA lists total graphics power (TGP) of 575 W for the RTX 5090 and 360 W for the RTX 5080. TGP is a graphics-card rating; it is not the power consumed by the whole PC, nor does it mean the card draws that amount constantly in every game. NVIDIA’s corresponding system PSU recommendations are 1000 W and 850 W, respectively, and depend on the other components in the system.
What reviewers measured in specific games
GamersNexus measured 298 W for the RTX 5080 in its Final Fantasy XIV 4K test. In its F1 24 4K ray-tracing test, it measured 330 W for the 5080 and 569 W for the 5090. These are workload-specific GPU readings from those tests, not whole-system wall-power measurements or guaranteed draw in other games. GamersNexus’s RTX 5080 review
Does the RTX 5090 run hotter?
In GamersNexus’s cited full-load comparison, the RTX 5080 Founders Edition recorded 65–66°C at the GPU and about 72–75°C at memory. The RTX 5090 Founders Edition recorded 72°C at the GPU and 90°C at memory. In that test, the 5080 fans ran at roughly 1,470–1,500 RPM, while the 5090 fan speed was about 100 RPM higher. GamersNexus described the 5080’s thermal result as good overall and its acoustic profile as similar to the 5090’s.
Rank #2
- AI Performance: 772 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2580 MHz Default mode: 2550 MHz(Boost clock)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce Card
- Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
These readings do not establish that every RTX 5080 cooler runs cooler than every RTX 5090 cooler. Temperatures depend on the card’s cooler, workload, test conditions, and airflow. A lower temperature can also come from faster fan operation, so consider noise and performance alongside the temperature. In a separate extended Cyberpunk 2077 run, Tom’s Hardware reported the RTX 5090 Founders Edition stabilizing around 80°C at the GPU core and 96°C at GDDR7 memory—another test, not a directly interchangeable result. The RTX 5090’s higher TGP and NVIDIA’s 1000 W system recommendation make it especially important to check the PSU against the complete build. The 5080’s listed recommendation is 850 W, but neither figure by itself determines whether an existing PSU is suitable; follow the exact card maker’s requirements and account for the CPU and other components.
For the reference cards, NVIDIA lists dimensions of 304 × 137 mm and a nominal two-slot specification. Its setup guidance calls for three-slot clearance and extra room for the power cable, so do not treat the two-slot figure as all the space a completed installation needs. Board-partner cards can differ in length, width, slot thickness, power connectors, cooler, and power limits. Confirm the exact SKU against the case’s GPU clearance and cable-routing space, and verify that the PSU has the required connector arrangement.
