RTX 5070 Ti vs RX 9070 XT: Power Use, PSU Requirements, and Operating Costs

Both reference GPUs have a 750 W PSU recommendation, but review tests found workload-dependent differences in gaming power. Estimate bill impact using your hours and electricity rate.

The RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT have nearly identical manufacturer power ratings and the same recommended PSU capacity for their reference specifications. In two independent gaming comparisons, however, the RX 9070 XT used more power on average. What that means for your electricity bill depends on your gaming hours and local rate—not just the wattage printed on a product page.

What do the manufacturers’ power figures mean?

NVIDIA lists the reference RTX 5070 Ti at 300 W Total Graphics Power (TGP) and recommends a 750 W system power supply. AMD lists the RX 9070 XT at 304 W Typical Board Power (Desktop) and a 750 W minimum PSU recommendation. These are the manufacturers’ published specifications, not measurements made under a shared test method.

Reference specification RTX 5070 Ti RX 9070 XT
Manufacturer’s power label 300 W Total Graphics Power (TGP), NVIDIA 304 W Typical Board Power (Desktop), AMD
Manufacturer’s PSU figure 750 W Required System Power, NVIDIA 750 W Minimum PSU Recommendation, AMD

Sources: NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 family specifications and AMD’s RX 9070 XT specifications. The 4 W gap between the published card figures does not establish which GPU is more efficient: the vendors use different labels, and these specifications do not describe a common benchmark.

How much power do they use while gaming?

Game draw can differ from a specification-sheet figure because it depends on the game, settings, frame rate, card design and measurement method. In its 2025 review testing, PC Gamer reported average card power of 303 W for the RTX 5070 Ti and 352 W for the RX 9070 XT. TechSpot’s 52-game comparison, published May 22, 2026, summarized the Radeon as typically using about 20% more power. Those are review results, not a guarantee for every game, partner card or PC configuration.

  • Modern Standby Compatible: Extremely fast wake-from-sleep times and better low-load efficiency.

Sources: PC Gamer’s 2025 comparison and TechSpot’s 52-game comparison. These reported figures are card-power results; they should not be read as whole-PC wall-power measurements. A wall meter includes the rest of the system and the power supply’s conversion losses. Idle use, transient peaks and equal-frame-rate comparisons are separate questions, and the cited average figures do not settle them.

What PSU do you need?

For their reference specifications, both companies give a 750 W PSU recommendation. That shared figure means choosing between these two reference GPUs alone does not change the nominal PSU capacity on paper. It is not a guarantee that every 750 W unit will suit every build.

  • High Amperage Single +12V Rail: Provides reliable and stable power delivery, optimized for high-end gaming and workstation builds.
  • RTX 5070 Ti: NVIDIA lists either two PCIe 8-pin cables used with the included adapter, or a PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for at least 300 W. NVIDIA recommends a PCIe CEM 5.1-compliant PSU. Its 750 W figure is based on a system configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X, and NVIDIA notes that requirements can vary with system configuration.
  • RX 9070 XT: AMD lists a 750 W minimum PSU recommendation. Check the connector and power instructions for the specific retail card; do not assume every partner model uses the same arrangement.

Before reusing or buying a PSU, check the exact graphics card maker’s instructions, the CPU and other components in your build, the PSU’s quality and condition, and whether it has the required native cables. NVIDIA also cautions that specifications may vary by add-in-card manufacturer. A partner card’s own product sheet takes precedence over a family-level reference figure.

For an illustration using PC Gamer’s reported averages, the gap between the two cards is 49 W, or 0.049 kWh per hour. Across 1,000 gaming hours, that is 49 kWh. At an assumed $0.20 per kWh, the difference would be $9.80 for those 1,000 hours. The rate is an example input, not a claim about a current or universal electricity price.

Use your own tariff and hours to estimate your result. This illustration covers only the difference in reported card power; it does not calculate total PC consumption, changing loads, non-gaming use, PSU losses or regional tariff structures. Electricity prices vary by location, provider, plan and time, so a single rate cannot represent every reader’s bill.

Why can your card or results differ?

Specifications and benchmark averages describe particular products or test conditions, not every configuration. NVIDIA says system requirements can differ by configuration, and both vendors’ reference figures may not match a partner card’s design. Game engine, resolution, settings, frame-rate limits and test method can all change observed draw.

For a comparison specific to your PC, look for measurements that identify whether they record card power or wall power, name the games and settings, and explain whether frame rates are capped or matched. Do not multiply a card-power figure into a whole-system bill without accounting for the rest of the PC.
