For YouTube, use RTMPS when available; the endpoint and credentials are destination-specific, not universal.
What you need before you start
- A destination account and a live broadcast or channel workflow that is ready to receive an encoder feed.
- An encoder such as OBS Studio, installed on a computer capable of handling the resolution, frame rate and scene you plan to use.
- The platform’s current ingest/server URL and stream key.
- Stable upload capacity for the output settings you choose, with room for network variation.
- The video and audio sources you want to broadcast. A webcam or capture card is optional: a screen-only stream does not require either.
RTMP is the connection mechanism between your encoder and the platform, not a complete streaming setup by itself. The destination controls authorization and ingest details; OBS handles your sources and encoded output. OBS describes its service, server and key fields in its overview guide.
How RTMP, RTMPS, the server URL and stream key fit together
Ingest URL
The ingest or server URL tells OBS where to send the encoded stream. It varies by platform and may vary by the destination’s current setup. Copy it from the platform’s live setup screen rather than using an address found in an old tutorial.
Stream key
The stream key authorizes the encoder and associates its feed with your account or broadcast. Treat it like a password: keep it out of screenshots, overlays and public chat. If it is exposed, reset or rotate it in the platform dashboard before streaming again. Twitch’s stream key FAQ describes the key as the encoder’s authorization credential.

RTMP versus RTMPS
RTMPS is RTMP protected by a secure connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents its setup in YouTube Help. Use the protocol supported by your destination and encoder; do not assume the same port, URL or protocol works on every service. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide notes that incorrect server names, ports or SSL configuration can cause connection timeouts or SSL errors.
Set up a live stream in OBS, step by step
- Prepare the destination broadcast. In the platform’s dashboard, create or select the live event or channel workflow and open its encoder or stream setup. Confirm the broadcast is ready to receive an encoder connection.
- Copy the current URL and key. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that destination. Keep the key private. If the platform has reset the key since you last used it, retrieve the current one rather than relying on a saved value.
- Connect OBS to the destination. Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. If OBS provides a built-in service for your platform, select it and enter the key as requested. Otherwise, choose a custom server option and enter the platform’s exact server URL and stream key. The labels can vary with OBS versions and service presets; use the values and protocol provided by the destination.
- Choose the secure endpoint when supported. For YouTube, select the RTMPS endpoint if the live setup and encoder offer it. Do not change a URL’s protocol or port by guesswork.
- Build the scene. In OBS, add the sources needed for the broadcast, such as display capture, window capture, game capture, media, a microphone or a webcam. OBS’s Sources Guide covers source types. A camera is not required unless the content calls for one; an external HDMI source may require a capture device supported by your operating system and OBS.
- Check audio input. Speak into the selected microphone or play the source audio and confirm the relevant OBS audio meters move. Choose the intended desktop-audio and microphone devices instead of assuming OBS selected the correct ones.
- Set video and output values. Choose resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, encoder and keyframe interval according to the destination’s current requirements, your available upload bandwidth and your computer’s capacity. YouTube publishes its current recommendations in its encoder settings guide; OBS explains that bitrate must account for connection speed and destination constraints in its overview. These values are not universal, so do not copy a bitrate or resolution without checking the destination’s guidance.
- Test the full chain. Start a short private or unlisted test broadcast when the platform permits, or record a test locally. Check the platform preview or connection status, confirm picture and sound, and watch OBS for dropped frames or encoder warnings. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing before a first stream.
- Go live. Once the platform preview and OBS output look and sound right, start the broadcast in the platform workflow if required. Monitor OBS and the destination dashboard during the stream.
Choose output settings that fit the destination and connection
There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every platform, network and computer. The platform’s latest encoder guidance sets the relevant limits and recommendations; your upload connection and encoder performance determine whether your setup can sustain them. Increasing resolution or frame rate generally raises the data and processing demands, so choose a target that your system can maintain reliably.

- Resolution and frame rate: Match the destination’s supported formats and choose a level your system can encode consistently. Do not treat the maximum listed by a platform as the best choice for every stream.
- Video and audio bitrate: Follow the destination’s current guidance, and ensure your available upload capacity can sustain the combined stream. Leave headroom rather than planning to use every bit of a variable connection.
- Codec and encoder: Use an encoder and codec supported by the destination. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU load on some systems, but performance depends on the hardware and scene.
- Keyframes: Use the keyframe interval specified in the destination’s current encoder settings. Avoid assuming one value applies to every service.
- Scene complexity: Multiple animated layers, capture sources and filters can increase computer load even when the output resolution stays the same.
OBS’s system requirements page cautions that meeting basic requirements does not guarantee streaming performance; CPU demand depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. If you are unsure where to start, OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help choose settings, after which you should still test the actual broadcast.
Built-in service or custom server in OBS?
| Setup route | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in platform service or preset | A destination listed in OBS, when you want a straightforward setup. | Confirm the selected service matches the destination and that the key belongs to the intended broadcast. |
| Custom server URL and key | A platform or service that supplies a specific ingest endpoint, or a case where you need endpoint control. | Enter the exact URL, protocol, port and key supplied by the destination. Check for typos or outdated values. |
Both routes send an encoder feed; the platform’s current setup screen remains the authority for its server address and credentials. OBS documents the service, server and key options in its overview guide.

Troubleshoot common RTMP streaming problems
OBS will not connect, or the platform preview stays blank
- Confirm the broadcast is prepared and expecting an encoder feed.
- Recheck that the server URL and key belong to the same destination and broadcast.
- Check whether the stream key was reset or replaced.
- Verify the protocol and port against the platform’s current settings. For YouTube RTMPS, inspect the server name, port and SSL configuration; an RTMPS endpoint cannot be treated as cleartext RTMP.
Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide details endpoint and SSL-related connection failures.
Video appears but there is no sound
Check the selected microphone and desktop-audio devices, then watch OBS’s meters while audio is playing. If the meters do not move, verify the source device and its operating-system input settings before restarting the stream. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers checking audio meters.

The stream stutters, drops frames or overloads the computer
Separate a network problem from an encoder or computer-load problem. OBS dropped-frame indicators can help identify network trouble; encoder overload warnings point toward processing limits. Reduce output demands or scene complexity, check available upload capacity, or run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and test again. OBS explains the variables affecting performance in its system requirements.
A webcam or external video source is missing
Confirm OBS has selected the correct device and that the capture device supports the operating-system path you are using. Check the source’s resolution and frame-rate options, and verify that another application is not exclusively using the device. OBS documents device setup in its Video Capture Sources guide and webcam notes in its webcam FAQ.
