RTIPC Explained: Fast Shared-Memory IPC, Queue Behavior, and Limits

RTIPC uses fixed-size SPSC queues in shared memory and favors the latest update over lossless delivery. Here is how setup, queue behavior, and performance evidence fit together.

RTIPC is a Linux inter-process communication library built around fixed-size, single-producer/single-consumer queues in shared memory. Its design aims to transfer the newest data with little work in the data path: when a queue fills, the producer can overwrite the oldest queued message rather than block or preserve every update. That makes RTIPC a candidate for fresh state and measurements, not a lossless message backlog. The project describes the approach as zero-copy and low-overhead, but its project and package pages do not publish benchmark results that quantify those claims.

What RTIPC is

RTIPC is a library for real-time inter-process communication (IPC). Its documented core is a wait-free, zero-copy, single-producer/single-consumer (SPSC) circular queue. One or more channels reside in shared memory, allowing processes to exchange fixed-size messages through that region rather than sending each message through a conventional socket data path. The project repository describes the library and its design.

“Zero-copy” refers to the intended message-transfer path, not to every part of using the library: processes still need to establish the shared-memory channels and coordinate their configuration. Likewise, “wait-free” describes the queue design; it does not mean every surrounding operation, application, or system call is guaranteed to complete within a fixed time.

How shared-memory channel setup works

  1. Create the shared-memory region and channel configuration. The channel’s message size and queue capacity are fixed when it is created.
  2. Pass setup information over a Unix socket. The client provides the shared-memory region and configuration information to the server through the socket.
  3. Build matching channels at the server. The server uses the received information to construct a corresponding vector of channels.
  4. Exchange messages through shared memory. Once configured, the channel queue is the data path between its single producer and single consumer.

RTIPC also documents optional eventfd support for connecting notifications to select, poll, or epoll event loops. That is an integration option for notification; it does not change the queue’s SPSC model or make its contents a lossless history.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What happens when a queue is full

The documented policy favors freshness: if the queue fills, the producer can replace the oldest queued message with the newest one. The producer therefore need not wait for the consumer to make room, but an unread update can be discarded. An application reading the queue gets a recent value rather than a guarantee that it will process every value in order.

This behavior can fit state snapshots, current measurements, or other streams where a stale update is less useful than the latest state. It is a poor match when every event must be retained, audited, or processed exactly once. In that case, use a delivery design with appropriate retention and backpressure guarantees rather than assuming RTIPC’s overwrite behavior is lossless.

Check the model against your application

  • Producer and consumer count: the documented queue is SPSC. Applications with multiple concurrent producers or consumers need a different coordination design or additional channels.
  • Message size: messages are fixed-size for a channel. Variable-sized records do not fit that model directly.
  • Queue capacity: capacity is fixed at creation. Choose it with expected bursts and consumer delays in mind, while recognizing that a full queue overwrites its oldest message.
  • Delivery semantics: decide whether dropping stale updates is acceptable. If not, queue fullness behavior is a fundamental mismatch, not just a tuning issue.
  • Notification needs: determine whether optional eventfd notifications fit the application’s event loop or whether another wake-up mechanism is needed.
  • Performance evidence: verify latency and throughput on the actual target system if those determine suitability; design descriptions alone do not establish application-level performance.

Does “near-zero-overhead” mean measured performance?

No numerical performance result is established by the project and package pages reviewed here. They describe zero-copy, syscall-free transfer in the data path and deterministic behavior as design properties, but provide no latency, throughput, CPU-utilization, or comparative benchmark figures. They also do not specify benchmark hardware, kernel, or workload settings from which a reader could assess those claims.

Consequently, “near-zero-overhead” should be read as a design goal or characterization, not as a quantified guarantee or independently verified result. For a deployment decision, benchmark the workload on the intended hardware and kernel, including queue-full behavior and consumer scheduling; do not substitute unrelated IPC or network benchmark numbers for RTIPC measurements.

RTIPC is not Linux TIPC

The similar names refer to different technologies. RTIPC is the library described above, centered on shared-memory channels for local IPC. Linux kernel TIPC means Transparent Inter Process Communication; the Linux 6.7 kernel documentation describes it as an intra-cluster communication protocol that can use UDP or Ethernet transports. TIPC is not another name for RTIPC, and its cluster/network role should not be confused with RTIPC’s documented shared-memory queue model.

Version context

Docs.rs lists the Rust package rtipc as version 0.9.0, dated 2026-09-28, and describes it as a pure Rust implementation. That is a dated snapshot of that package, not evidence that every RTIPC implementation or deployment uses the same version.
