Connect your modem, ONT, or other internet source to the router port labeled WAN or Internet. Connect computers, consoles, switches, and other wired devices to LAN ports. If a port is marked WAN/LAN, it may need to be assigned the WAN role in the router’s settings before it can serve as the internet connection.
Which Ethernet port should you use?
WAN is the router’s internet-facing connection. It links the router to the modem, ONT, or other source of internet service. LAN ports connect devices on your home network to the router.

Start with the labels printed beside the jacks or the connection diagram in the manual for your exact router. Port positions, colors, labels, and speeds vary by model; appearance alone is not a reliable guide.

What if the port says WAN/LAN?
A WAN/LAN jack can serve either as an internet-facing port or as a local network port, depending on the router and its configuration. Connect the internet source to the port selected as WAN in the router’s setup. ASUS says to connect the cable to the WAN port you intend to configure; on applicable ASUS models, WAN selection is available in WAN > Dual WAN after setup or during Quick Internet Setup. On supported Nighthawk models, NETGEAR documents WAN Preference > Multi-Gig Port. These paths apply only to the manufacturers’ applicable models and may vary by firmware. ASUS setup guidance and NETGEAR setup guidance provide model-specific instructions.

Port role and port speed are different
WAN or LAN describes the port’s function. 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps, or 10 Gbps describes its supported link rate. A fast port is not automatically the right port for the modem: a combined port may need the WAN role selected first.
Layouts are model-specific. For example, TP-Link lists the Archer AX55 Pro with one 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port, one 1 Gbps WAN/LAN port, and three gigabit LAN ports. That is one product’s layout, not a standard arrangement for all routers. TP-Link Archer AX55 Pro specifications.

Why a multi-gig port may still show a slower connection
The rate printed in a router’s specifications is only one part of the connection. To get a particular WAN link rate, the router port and modem or other source device must support it. The ISP service, cable, and relevant network link also need to support the intended rate. A fast LAN connection likewise depends on the connected device and the link between them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Check the router’s link status and confirm which jack is configured as WAN.
- Check the modem or other source device’s Ethernet capability and the router’s specifications.
- Confirm that your ISP service supports the expected internet speed.
- Check the cable guidance for the specific router and endpoint rather than assuming every Ethernet connection requires the same cable category.
For its stated maximum 10G troubleshooting case, ASUS recommends checking cable specifications and using Cat6 or above. NETGEAR documents backward compatibility and port-specific negotiated rates for its covered multi-gig ports. These are equipment-specific recommendations, not universal rules for every router or connection. ASUS 2.5G/10G WAN guidance and NETGEAR multi-gig speed guidance.

Fix a likely wrong-port connection
- Read the labels beside the router’s Ethernet jacks or find the port diagram in the manual for your model.
- Connect the modem, ONT, or other internet source to the designated WAN or Internet jack.
- Connect local wired devices to LAN jacks.
- If using a WAN/LAN jack, open the router setup interface and assign that port as WAN using the instructions for your model. Check that the cable is plugged into the port you selected.
- If the router still reports no internet or an unexpectedly low link rate, check its link status and verify the capabilities of the source device, router, ISP service, connected device, and cable.
If the router has no clearly identified WAN port, or moving the source cable does not restore service, consult the router manual and your ISP’s connection instructions rather than guessing at the port assignment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse aggregation with choosing a port
WAN or LAN link aggregation combines connections when the router and other equipment support that configuration. It is separate from selecting the correct jack for a normal internet connection and is not a routine fix for plugging the source cable into the wrong port. ASUS’s GT-AX6000 FAQ describes WAN aggregation and LAN aggregation as distinct functions. ASUS GT-AX6000 aggregation FAQ.
