What WAN and LAN mean
WAN connects toward the internet
WAN is the router’s upstream connection. In a typical home setup, an Ethernet cable runs from the modem’s Ethernet output to the router’s WAN or Internet port. With fiber service, the fiber usually terminates at an optical network terminal (ONT); connect the ONT’s Ethernet output to the router’s WAN port, rather than connecting the fiber itself to the router. Huawei describes the WAN port as connecting to a modem or the downlink LAN port of another router (Huawei support).

LAN connects devices inside your home
LAN ports connect wired clients such as computers, televisions, and set-top boxes to the home network. A LAN port can also connect to an Ethernet switch if you need more wired connections; connect the additional devices to the switch. NETGEAR’s guidance explains this downstream use of a switch (NETGEAR: Ethernet switch vs. hub).

Use the labels printed beside the ports, not their position or color. Colors and physical layouts are not universal, and some routers use a shared WAN/LAN port whose role depends on the model or a software setting.

How to connect your router
- Locate the modem’s Ethernet output, or the Ethernet output on the ONT if you have fiber service.
- Connect that cable to the router’s port labeled WAN or Internet. If there is no dedicated port, check the model’s manual or administration interface to see whether a WAN/LAN port must be assigned.
- Connect wired computers, TVs, and other clients to LAN ports.
- If you need more wired connections than the router provides, connect an Ethernet switch to a LAN port, then connect the extra devices to the switch.
What if a port says WAN/LAN or is multi-gig?
A shared port may be assignable as either WAN or LAN, and some routers let you choose a multi-gig port as the WAN connection. Do not assume a shared port is already configured for the role you need. Check the exact model and hardware revision’s instructions and, where required, select the port in the router’s administration settings. NETGEAR documents a WAN preference setting for certain multi-gig configurations (NETGEAR support); ASUS also documents selectable WAN configurations on specified models (ASUS support).
Port speed is only one part of the connection. The modem or ONT, router port, client port, service plan, and network path all affect the maximum speed. A 2.5 Gbps WAN port cannot make a 1 Gbps internet connection deliver 2.5 Gbps. Likewise, a fast LAN port can improve transfers between compatible devices on your home network without increasing the speed of your internet plan.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Port layouts vary by model. For example, TP-Link lists one 2.5 Gbps WAN port, one 2.5 Gbps LAN port, and three Gigabit LAN ports on the Archer AX55 Pro (TP-Link specifications). That configuration is an example, not a standard layout for all routers.

Why the wrong port can cause trouble
- Modem plugged into LAN: In a conventional router setup, the modem or ONT Ethernet output belongs in WAN/Internet. Use a different arrangement only if your router’s instructions specify it.
- Choosing by color: Port colors do not define a universal WAN or LAN standard. Follow the printed label and model-specific documentation.
- Assuming faster port means faster internet: A faster port helps only if the connected equipment and the rest of the link support that speed. NETGEAR lists rates supported by certain multi-gig ports, but capabilities vary by product (NETGEAR multi-gig guidance).
- Connecting two cables for aggregation: WAN aggregation is not simply plugging in two cables. NETGEAR’s instructions require compatible Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) support from the connected modem and configuration on both devices (NETGEAR WAN aggregation instructions). For an ordinary setup, use one WAN cable unless both devices’ instructions call for aggregation.
If the connection is slow or does not work
- Check that the modem or ONT cable is in WAN/Internet, and that wired clients are in LAN.
- For a shared port, confirm its assigned role in the router settings.
- Check the negotiated link speed and the specifications of the modem or ONT, router port, client port, and cable. A 2.5G connection requires compatible equipment along the relevant path; NETGEAR describes supported rates for its 2.5G ports, including 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, and 2.5 Gbps (NETGEAR multi-gig guidance).
- Replace a cable only if it is damaged or unsuitable for the speed you are trying to use. ASUS recommends Cat6 or above for maximum 10G speed in its cited guidance (ASUS support); that does not mean every working home cable needs replacement.
- Look up the router’s exact model and hardware revision, since port assignment and menu names can differ by model and firmware.
