What Oman’s warning says about games and children
In a 1 September 2026 report, Muscat Daily quoted Dr Hussain bin Ali Al Senani, Assistant Public Prosecutor, warning that offenders can use online games and social media to make contact with children and gradually lure them. The report mentions serious abuse in some cases but gives no case details or prevalence figures. It does not identify a particular game or establish that a documented blackmail scheme took place through one.

Al Senani’s advice, as quoted in the report, was: “Parents should monitor their children’s Internet use, understand the nature of their online interactions and teach them not to share personal information or respond to requests from strangers.” Grooming and blackmail are not the same thing: the warning about contact and grooming should not be treated as proof that every child who chats in a game is at risk of extortion.
How to reduce risk without shutting down conversation
- Ask what games your child plays, which chat or messaging features they use, and who they speak with there.
- Agree that a child should tell a trusted adult if someone they do not know asks for personal details, requests images, or tries to move a conversation to another service.
- Explain that they can come to you even if they have already replied, shared something, or made a mistake. Responding calmly makes it easier for a child to seek help.
- Monitor online interactions in an age-appropriate way and keep the conversation ongoing; supervision should support trust, not replace it.
Parental controls can be an additional support for managing game time or access, but they are not a substitute for talking with a child and knowing how they use chat. The core advice in the reported prosecutor warning is awareness, supervision and teaching children not to respond to strangers or share personal information.

What to do if someone threatens your child
- Listen without blame. Thank your child for telling you. Do not shame or punish them for disclosing what happened.
- Do not comply with the demand. A September 2026 report describing ROP advice says not to give in to extortion demands. Avoid paying, sending more material, or negotiating with the person making the threat.
- Preserve what is available. Save screenshots, messages, threats, account names or details, and other relevant evidence. Avoid deleting the conversation or account before you have preserved useful information.
- Report the threat promptly. The ROP contact page lists 80077444 for “Report Cyber Extortion (Blackmail).” Confirm the number on the official ROP contact page in case contact details change.
The same official page lists 9999 separately as the Police Operations Center emergency number. It is not the cyber-extortion reporting line; use it for emergencies.
Keep the warning in proportion
A separate 17 September 2026 report on electronic extortion describes demands for money, photographs, videos or other actions, and mentions methods such as fake accounts, old personal data, malicious links or hacking. Those are described as general electronic-extortion methods, not as techniques established in online-game cases. The accessible reporting does not name games, platforms, affected ages, incident counts or a trend over time, so it cannot show how common gaming-related blackmail is.
