NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and the European Space Agency’s Euclid both investigate cosmic expansion and the structure of the universe, but they are designed to do different jobs. Euclid will map a much larger area of sky for cosmology; Roman will survey a smaller area more deeply and precisely, while also studying exoplanets and other infrared astrophysics. Their overlapping observations are intended to complement one another, not to make one telescope a replacement for the other.
What will the Roman Space Telescope study?
NASA organizes Roman’s science around dark energy, exoplanets and astrophysics. Its main survey instrument is the Wide Field Instrument, which observes in infrared light and supports large surveys. NASA says Roman will measure light from a billion galaxies. Its field of view is at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s, according to NASA’s mission overview.

Cosmology and infrared astrophysics
Roman will investigate the expansion history of the universe and the growth of cosmic structure. Its cosmology program includes measurements of galaxy shapes and clustering, as well as Type Ia supernovae, which help trace how expansion has changed over time. Roman’s broader infrared capabilities also support astrophysics beyond that cosmology program.

Exoplanets and the coronagraph
Roman’s Milky Way microlensing survey is expected to find more than 1,000 exoplanets, according to NASA. A separate Coronagraph Instrument will demonstrate technology for high-contrast imaging and spectroscopy of individual nearby exoplanets. It is a technology demonstration, not Roman’s principal wide-area survey instrument. NASA says Roman’s three core surveys account for 75% of its five-year primary mission (Roman science overview).

What is Euclid looking for?
Euclid is ESA’s space telescope for exploring the composition and evolution of the “dark Universe.” Its primary focus is cosmology: mapping large-scale structure across space and time to examine the history of cosmic expansion and the roles of dark matter, dark energy and gravity. It measures galaxy shapes and clustering using visible and near-infrared observations. ESA describes its mission on the Euclid mission page.
Euclid’s routine survey began on February 14, 2024, according to ESA’s mission-status page. That makes it the mission already carrying out its planned cosmology survey; Roman’s role is designed to add a deeper, more precise view in selected regions.

How are Roman and Euclid different?
| Comparison | Roman | Euclid |
|---|---|---|
| Main scope | Cosmology, exoplanets and broader infrared astrophysics | Primarily cosmology and the dark Universe |
| Planned survey area | About 2,000 square degrees for its largest core survey | About 15,000 square degrees, roughly one third of the sky |
| Survey strategy | Smaller area, designed for greater depth and precision | Broader area to map large-scale structure |
| Cosmology methods | Weak gravitational lensing, galaxy clustering and Type Ia supernovae | Weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering |
| Observing instruments and light | Wide Field Instrument for infrared surveys; separate visible-light coronagraph technology demonstration for nearby exoplanets | Visible and infrared instruments for its cosmology survey |
The area figures are NASA’s mission-design comparison figures published in 2023; they describe planned surveys, not a universal performance ranking. NASA’s Roman–Euclid comparison explains the distinction: Euclid surveys roughly one third of the sky, while Roman’s largest core survey covers roughly one twentieth. Roman’s smaller footprint is intended to provide greater depth and precision.

Are Roman and Euclid studying dark energy in the same way?
They overlap in important methods, but their survey designs and combinations of measurements differ. Both use weak gravitational lensing—the subtle distortion of distant galaxy shapes by intervening mass—and galaxy clustering to investigate cosmic structure. Roman also uses Type Ia supernovae to trace expansion history. Different measurements provide different ways to test explanations of cosmic acceleration; neither mission has already established what dark energy is.

Why the missions are expected to work together
Their survey regions are expected to overlap. Euclid’s broad map can identify patterns across a large area, while Roman’s more sensitive and precise observations in selected regions can help calibrate or correct measurements over that broader survey. Mike Seiffert, project scientist for NASA’s contribution to Euclid at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said: “Euclid’s first look at the broad region of sky it will survey will inform the science, analysis, and survey approach for Roman’s deeper dive.” The quote appears in NASA’s mission comparison.

ESA lists Euclid’s launch as July 1, 2023, and says its routine survey began February 14, 2024. NASA’s current Roman mission overview lists its launch as August 30, 2026. These are mission status and schedule facts, not evidence that either telescope has solved dark energy; Roman’s mission page does not establish a commissioning-complete or routine-survey-start date.
