Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can use the Roku mobile app to control a Roku TV only when the phone and TV are already connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If the TV has not joined Wi-Fi yet, the app is not a dependable way to enter the network password. Try the TV’s own controls if they can navigate setup; otherwise, use a replacement remote verified for your exact TV model. Ethernet or a phone hotspot can change the network connection, but neither removes the need to control the on-screen menus.
Can you connect a Roku TV to Wi-Fi without a remote?
Usually, not with the Roku app alone. Roku’s setup guidance uses a remote to power on the TV and navigate initial setup, and Roku Support says a remote is needed to connect a Roku device to Wi-Fi. The distinction matters: the support answer refers to a Roku device generally, while the TV’s physical controls and compatible remotes depend on its make and model. Choose the control method that fits your situation
| Option | When it can help | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Roku mobile app | The TV and phone are already on the same Wi-Fi network and the app can discover the TV. | It cannot be assumed to connect to a TV that has not joined the network. |
| TV’s physical controls | The buttons or joystick on your specific TV can navigate the network setup screens. | Button location and menu capabilities vary by make and model; check the TV manual. |
| Compatible replacement remote | The compatibility information names your exact TV brand and model. | Do not assume every Roku or universal remote works with every Roku TV. |
| Ethernet | Your TV has an Ethernet port and its setup offers a wired connection. | It provides network access, but you still need to navigate the screen. |
| Phone hotspot | The hotspot appears in the TV’s wireless network list and you can select it. | You still need a control method to choose it and enter its password; streaming and updates can use substantial mobile data. |
What to try, step by step
- Turn on the TV and select the right input. Use the TV’s physical power control if needed. If you mean a separate Roku player connected to a television, use the television’s Input or Source control to select its HDMI input. Controls vary by manufacturer and model, so consult the TV manual.
- Try the Roku app if the TV is already on your Wi-Fi. Install Roku’s official mobile app, connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the TV, open the app, and select the discovered Roku device. Roku’s app installation guidance describes the app; shared Wi-Fi is the key requirement for discovery.
- If the TV is not on that network, restore physical control. Try the TV’s buttons only if they let you navigate to network settings and enter credentials. If they do not, obtain a replacement remote whose compatibility list specifically includes your TV’s brand and model. Roku’s setup guide lists a remote as a setup item, and its support page says a remote is needed to connect a Roku device to Wi-Fi.
- Use Ethernet only if your TV supports it. Check for an Ethernet port and confirm the wired setup instructions in the TV manual. Roku’s network guidance covers Ethernet on supported devices. A wired connection avoids selecting a Wi-Fi network, but does not solve the need to navigate setup.
- Consider a hotspot only if you can operate the menus. A phone hotspot may be selectable as a Wi-Fi network, but you still have to select it and type its password. Check your mobile plan before streaming or downloading updates over cellular data.
Why the Roku app may not solve a first-time setup
The app is a useful remote once your phone and Roku TV share a Wi-Fi network. But if the TV is offline or waiting for its first network connection, it may not appear in the app: the phone cannot simply send new Wi-Fi credentials to a TV it cannot discover on the shared network. That is why physical controls or a model-compatible remote are the practical routes when setting up a disconnected TV.
Check compatibility before replacing the remote
Look up the TV’s exact model in its manual or on its identification label, then verify that the replacement remote’s compatibility information includes that model. A remote intended for a different Roku TV or a generic universal remote may not provide the controls needed for setup. Roku’s setup guide explains the expected setup process; confirm model-specific remote compatibility before buying.
