Roku screen mirroring is usually reliable, but Windows 11 can break the experience when Miracast isn’t negotiated correctly or when network and firewall rules block discovery. If your Windows 11 PC can’t find your Roku (or connects but stays black), you’re not alone.
This quick-fix guide walks through the fixes that most often resolve Roku screen mirroring not working in Windows 11. You’ll check Roku settings, Windows display casting options, network requirements, and the most common driver and firewall culprits.

Why Roku screen mirroring fails on Windows 11
Screen mirroring depends on the same basics every time: your Windows 11 device must support Miracast, your Roku must be ready to accept a wireless display session, and both devices must reach each other on the same network segment. When any one of those fails, Windows 11 either won’t detect the Roku or the session won’t render video.
Common causes include VPN/guest Wi‑Fi isolation, outdated Wi‑Fi drivers, Windows 11 graphics driver issues, firewall blocks on UDP/TCP discovery, and Roku settings that aren’t expecting Miracast connections.

Quick pre-checks (do these first)
Before changing anything else, do these in order. They’re fast and resolve the majority of “not working” cases.
- Verify both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi network. Use the same SSID and make sure you’re not on a guest network.
- Disable VPN on Windows 11. VPN clients can block local discovery even when internet works.
- Restart the Roku and the PC. Power off the Roku, unplug for 10 seconds, plug back in, then reboot Windows 11.
- Turn off screen mirroring on Roku (if shown) and re-open it. Leave it on the mirroring screen while you try again.
Fix Roku-side settings
Roku must be actively in a state that listens for Miracast. If it’s not, Windows might see it inconsistently or fail during the handshake.
Confirm screen mirroring is enabled on Roku
- On your Roku remote, press Home.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Screen mirroring.
- Choose Screen mirroring mode and set it to Prompt (or the option that requires approval/permission).
If your Roku uses PIN-style prompts, be ready to accept the connection request on-screen.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Power-cycle the Miracast session
Return to the Screen mirroring screen and keep it open. Then retry from Windows. This forces Roku to advertise its mirroring availability fresh.
Fix Windows 11 screen mirroring settings
Windows 11 has multiple casting entry points, and the wrong one can cause failure. Make sure you’re using the display projection path that matches your hardware.
Confirm you’re projecting to the right device
- On Windows 11, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices.
- Check if your Roku appears under any Miracast/Wireless Display-related devices.
- If it appears but won’t connect, remove it (only for the Roku device) and retry the mirroring step from scratch.
Disable “Quick Assist”/focus modes only if they interfere
Focus Assist should not block Miracast, but aggressive power/optimization settings can. If you’re using a third-party “gaming mode” or firewall app, temporarily disable them for testing.
Method 1: Use Windows 11 Wireless Display (Miracast)
This is the direct “screen mirroring” workflow. It depends on Miracast support and stable Wi‑Fi discovery.

Step-by-step
- On Roku: open Settings → Screen mirroring and leave that screen open.
- On Windows 11: press Win + K.
- In the Cast panel, select your Roku device.
- If Roku prompts, select Allow on the Roku screen.
- Choose your display option (e.g., Duplicate), if Windows asks.
If the Roku never appears in the Win + K list, skip to the driver, network, and firewall sections.
When the connection succeeds but the screen stays black
- On Windows, press Win + P and switch the projection mode to Duplicate or Second screen only.
- Lower the display resolution temporarily: Settings → System → Display → Display resolution.
- Restart the mirroring session by disconnecting from the casting panel and reconnecting.
Method 2: Use the Roku app on Windows 11 (remote viewing/streaming)
If your goal is to watch content, not necessarily mirror the entire desktop, the Roku app can be a workable alternative. It won’t replicate true Miracast mirroring, but it can solve “no display output” problems.
Use the Roku app as a control/stream path
- Install the official Roku app on your device from the appropriate store (Windows support varies by build; you can also use supported Roku control methods).
- Make sure your PC and Roku are on the same Wi‑Fi network.
- Use the app’s remote controls and supported media features to stream content to Roku.
For “mirror my whole screen” tasks (presentations, browser tabs, games), you’ll still want Method 1 or the network/driver fixes.
Fix network and firewall causes
Miracast discovery and negotiation depend on local network communication. Even if internet works, firewall rules can prevent device discovery.

Confirm network isolation isn’t blocking discovery
- Check your Wi‑Fi router settings for Guest network or Client isolation.
- Switch both Windows 11 and Roku to the main network (not guest).
- If you use multiple bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), try moving both devices to the same band.
Disable Windows firewall temporarily (test only)
- Open Windows Security.
- Go to Firewall & network protection.
- Select your active network (Domain/Private/Public).
- Turn off Microsoft Defender Firewall briefly.
- Retry casting with Win + K.
If mirroring starts working with the firewall off, re-enable it and add an exception for the casting/display components used by your PC (or use a third-party firewall allowlist for “Wireless Display / Miracast”).
Turn off VPN and proxy
Besides disabling the VPN app, check Windows proxy settings: Settings → Network & internet → Proxy → make sure Use a proxy server is off.
Update drivers and confirm Miracast support
Windows 11 mirroring issues are frequently driver-related—especially Wi‑Fi and graphics drivers.

- Using guest Wi‑Fi or enabling client isolation on the router.
- Forgetting to disable VPN on Windows 11.
- Starting the Windows cast search too early before Roku is on the mirroring screen.
- Relying on a browser-based workaround when you actually need full desktop mirroring.
- Trying different casting methods at random without restarting the session.
Alternatives when mirroring won’t work
If the Miracast path keeps failing, you still have options depending on what you’re trying to do.
Use streaming apps instead of screen mirroring
If you’re watching Netflix, YouTube, or local network media, use the Roku app/channel on Roku rather than mirroring your desktop.
Use a dedicated casting device
Some users switch to a hardware wireless display dongle that supports Miracast/H.264 reliably, especially when the laptop’s wireless stack is the bottleneck.

FAQs
Is Roku screen mirroring the same as screen casting from apps like YouTube?
No. Roku screen mirroring typically uses Miracast/Wireless Display to replicate your PC screen. App casting (e.g., from YouTube) streams content and doesn’t mirror your entire desktop.
What if my Windows 11 PC never shows Wireless Display devices?
Your PC may not support Miracast, or the Wi‑Fi/graphics drivers may be out of date or incompatible. Update Wi‑Fi and graphics drivers in Device Manager, then reboot and retry Win + K.
Do I need to change Roku firmware settings?
Usually no. The most important Roku setting is Settings → Screen mirroring → set the mirroring mode to a prompt/permission option, and keep that screen open during the connection attempt.
Can Windows firewall rules fully prevent Roku discovery?
Yes. Firewall can block discovery/handshake traffic. If disabling the firewall makes mirroring work, re-enable it and then adjust allow rules for the wireless display/mirroring components your PC uses.
Bottom Line
If Roku screen mirroring isn’t working in Windows 11, the fastest path is: keep Roku on the Screen mirroring screen, connect using Win + K, then fix the usual culprits—guest Wi‑Fi isolation, VPN, Miracast/Wi‑Fi driver problems, and firewall blocks.
When troubleshooting gets stuck, clean out any paired Roku entries, power-cycle in the correct order, and retest. If you just need media playback, use Roku’s streaming apps instead of mirroring the entire desktop.
