MS Dhoni has the larger IPL captaincy record by matches led and total wins, while Rohit Sharma and Dhoni are tied at five titles each. In The Indian Express’s season-spanning table, accessed 4 October 2026, Dhoni’s record covers 2008–2025 with CSK and RPS; Rohit’s covers 2013–2023 with Mumbai Indians. Those different spans and teams matter when comparing their totals.

| Captain | Reported span and teams | Matches | Wins | Losses | Ties | No results | IPL titles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS Dhoni | 2008–2025; CSK/RPS | 235 | 136 | 97 | 0 | 2 | 5 |
| Rohit Sharma | 2013–2023; MI | 158 | 87 | 67 | 4 | 0 | 5 |
The Indian Express comparison table is the basis for the figures above. It lists Dhoni as captain for Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant (CSK/RPS) across 2008–2025, and Rohit for Mumbai Indians (MI) across 2013–2023. The counts should be read as that table’s reported record, not as a comparison across identical seasons or franchises.
What the totals show—and what they do not
Dhoni has led more matches and recorded more wins
Dhoni’s 235 captaincy appearances and 136 wins exceed Rohit’s 158 appearances and 87 wins in the cited table. The larger totals reflect a longer listed span and captaincy for two franchises, so they describe overall volume rather than performance under identical conditions.

The title count is level
Both are listed with five IPL titles as captain. The Mumbai Indians’ official season-by-season account of Rohit’s captaincy also describes five titles. Equal title counts establish a tie on that measure, but do not settle which captain was better overall.
Why published Rohit totals differ
The Indian Express table lists Rohit at 158 matches, 87 wins, 67 losses and four ties. Mumbai Indians’ season-by-season account, which lists seasons through 2023, instead gives 150 matches, 84 wins and 66 losses. These are different reported snapshots; they should not be combined into one record or treated as interchangeable. The comparison table above consistently uses the Indian Express figures.

Other pages also show conflicting captaincy figures. IPL.com’s page titled “Most Matches as Captain in IPL” has an opening discussion of Dhoni but a displayed table that omits him and lists Rohit at 156 matches and 88 wins, alongside mismatched ranks and totals. That page is not a dependable basis for a definitive current ranking.
An India Today report dated 11 April 2025 gives Dhoni 226 matches and 133 wins at that point. It is an earlier snapshot than the 2008–2025 table and contains ordering and match-count inconsistencies, so those figures are not used in the table here.

Why a win percentage is not given
A win percentage depends on its denominator: for example, whether ties and no-results count among matches considered. The Indian Express table’s W/L% field is not straightforward to reproduce from every outcome row it displays, and the available reports use inconsistent or unclear conventions. India Today’s 59.37% for Dhoni and 56.32% for Rohit are not a clean like-for-like pair given that article’s inconsistencies and denominator uncertainty. A percentage-based verdict would therefore imply more certainty than these figures support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, who has the better IPL captaincy record?
It depends on the measure. Dhoni leads in total captaincy appearances and wins in the cited table; the title count is tied. Because the records cover different spans and franchises, those totals alone cannot establish a definitive overall ranking.
