Rocket Report: Falcon 9 Scrubbed Late in Countdown as Vulcan’s Return Nears

A late Falcon 9 countdown scrub halted an SDA satellite mission, but SpaceX had not disclosed the cause. The next launch target and Vulcan’s planned return are separate developments, not evidence one rocket is replacing the other.

A Falcon 9 carrying satellites for the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA) was scrubbed in the final minute of its countdown earlier this week. SpaceX had not disclosed a cause in the October 9 report, so the scrub does not establish a vehicle fault or explain anything about the upcoming Vulcan mission. Falcon 9’s next opportunity was targeted for October 10 at 07:29 UTC; United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan, meanwhile, was planned to return to flight no earlier than October 29.

What happened to the Falcon 9?

The countdown was stopped as the rocket entered its automated startup sequence, less than a minute before launch. The mission was the SDA’s Tranche 1 Transport Layer A satellite launch. In its October 9 report, Ars Technica said SpaceX had not given a reason. No public cause was established in that account; it would be speculation to label the event a hardware or software problem.

The assigned booster, B1103, was making its sixth flight, according to Ars. Its previous missions included SDA’s T1TL-E, NROL-179, and three Starlink batches. That flight history is context, not evidence that the booster caused the scrub.

When was the next Falcon 9 launch opportunity?

Ars reported that the next target was no earlier than Saturday, October 10, at 07:29 UTC, after an October 6 opportunity had been waived. SpaceX’s official listing, viewed October 9, also scheduled its “SDA’s Fourth Tranche 1 Mission” for October 10 aboard a Falcon 9 from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) in California. These were plans, not confirmation that the launch took place; launch schedules can change.

Is Vulcan’s time to shine?

Vulcan had a notable launch opportunity ahead, but the available reporting does not show it replacing Falcon 9 or gaining a decisive advantage because of this scrub. Ars placed United Launch Alliance’s return-to-flight mission no earlier than October 29, carrying an Amazon Leo payload. Amazon Leo vice president Rajeev Badyal told Ars, “I can say we’re weeks away from launching on Vulcan.” That is an attributed readiness expectation, not a confirmed launch date.

The two events are at different stages: Falcon 9’s next SDA flight had a near-term target, while Vulcan’s Amazon Leo mission remained a future return-to-flight plan. The report supplies no comparable figures for vehicle performance, reliability, or price, so those are not sound ways to infer which rocket has the advantage here.

Why Amazon Leo is using multiple launch providers

Amazon Leo’s deployment plans provide the broader context for Vulcan’s role. Ars reported that Amazon had contracted with ULA, Blue Origin, Arianespace, and SpaceX, with Badyal describing the company’s intention to use a diverse set of launch partners. The point is provider choice and capacity for satellite launches—not a single rocket taking over another’s assignments.

In the same reported interview, Badyal said Amazon was working toward back-to-back Vulcan launches in 2026, plus at least one more Vulcan and one Arianespace launch that year. He also said two Vulcan rockets were being processed in parallel in separate vehicle integration facilities. These are company plans and statements, not completed launches or a guarantee that the schedule will hold.

Other launch developments in the October 9 report

South Korea’s Nuri rocket

Ars reported that Nuri deployed five satellites for a domestically launched microsatellite constellation. Nine of ten secondary CubeSats separated as planned; PERSAT-02 did not separate. The report described this as Nuri’s fourth consecutive success after its failed 2021 debut and cited an 80 percent overall launch success rate from Korea AeroSpace Administration information. That percentage is the agency figure as relayed by Ars, not an independently recalculated rate here.

HyImpulse’s SR75 flight

German company HyImpulse moved its next SR75 suborbital flight target from the end of 2026 to spring 2027. Ars attributed the delay to remaining licensing work and seasonal weather at SaxaVord.

Smartivity DIY Rocket Launcher STEM Kit for Kids 6-12 Years
  • BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
  • REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
  • SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
  • STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
  • RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.

Europe’s SALTO project

Ars reported that the European Commission extended the SALTO project deadline to the end of 2026. The project was valued at €42.8 million in the report. Its first two planned low-altitude Themis hop tests are intended to demonstrate launch, recovery, and relaunch.
