NASA’s inspector general reported that launches at Kennedy Space Center and Wallops increased 252% and 467%, respectively, from 2020 to 2025, while Kennedy’s common-use power, gas distribution, and pad transportation infrastructure was in poor condition and lacked capacity for growing needs. That is evidence of pressure at specific sites—not proof of a measured, industry-wide infrastructure deficit.
Why launch cadence depends on more than rockets and pads
A launch site is a network of interdependent systems. A vehicle may be ready and a pad available, yet a mission still depends on range scheduling and tracking, communications, utilities, commodity supplies, specialized equipment, and transportation. NASA’s Spaceport Throughput Analysis Resource work identifies telecommunications, range tracking, helium and nitrogen, and specialized equipment among the shared resources involved in launch operations. The report provides systems context; it does not establish a current capacity ceiling or identify a single resource as the dominant cause of delay. NASA Technical Reports Server

This distinction matters: adding pads or producing rockets more quickly does not automatically expand the capacity of common-use systems serving multiple operators and missions.

What the launch figures actually show
| Site or program | Cadence figure | What the figure means | Infrastructure context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kennedy Space Center and Wallops | Launches rose 252% at Kennedy and 467% at Wallops from 2020 to 2025. | Historical increase reported by NASA’s Office of Inspector General in 2026. | The OIG says Kennedy’s common-use electrical power, gas supply and distribution, and transportation to launch pads are in poor condition and lack capacity for growing needs. NASA OIG |
| Florida Falcon operations | More than 100 launches from Florida in 2025. | SpaceX described Falcon as being on track to exceed this figure; it is a company forecast/status statement, not a verified final count. | SpaceX said it was upgrading range and weather monitoring, coordinating communications frequencies, and expanding nitrogen and helium storage. SpaceX |
| Boca Chica, Texas | Up to 25 annual Starship/Super Heavy orbital launches, with up to 25 annual landings of each stage. | A proposed cadence described in a 2024 federal notice about a revised draft environmental assessment, not an achieved operating rate. | The notice concerns environmental review of proposed operations; it should not be read as evidence that the site has demonstrated this throughput. U.S. DOT / FAA notice |
| Vandenberg and the Western Launch and Test Range | From four to six launches annually to more than 50 per year within five years. | A comparison stated by Col. Mark Shoemaker, commander of Space Launch Delta 30 and the Western Launch and Test Range, in a 2025 Space Force release. | The statement describes a rapid rise in activity at a government-operated range; it is an attributed organizational account, not a uniform measure of national capacity. U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command |
These numbers describe different things over different periods: observed historical growth, a company’s in-year expectation, a proposed maximum under environmental review, and an official’s account of a range’s expansion. They cannot be combined into a single launch-rate comparison or treated as interchangeable proof of completed capacity.

Where shared infrastructure is under pressure
Utilities, commodities, and access at Kennedy
The clearest documented infrastructure warning in the cited material comes from NASA’s inspector general. In its 2026 assessment, the OIG said Kennedy’s common-use infrastructure for electrical power, gas supply and distribution, and transportation to pads was in poor condition and lacked the capacity to support growing needs. Because these systems serve launch operations beyond a single rocket, their condition can constrain site throughput even as vehicle cadence increases.
Range systems and supplies in Florida
SpaceX said its Florida Falcon pace required attention to supporting systems as well as launch vehicles. The company cited improvements to range and weather monitoring, coordination of communications frequencies, and nitrogen and helium storage. These are the operator’s stated upgrades and mitigation efforts; they do not independently establish the extent of any constraint or the resulting capacity of the range.

Government ranges beyond Florida
The Vandenberg example shows that the acceleration is not confined to Florida. Space Force Space Systems Command quoted Col. Mark Shoemaker describing a rise from four to six launches annually to more than 50 per year within five years. The statement illustrates the operational shift toward a high-capacity spaceport, but it does not quantify whether every supporting system expanded at the same pace.

Why reusability does not remove spaceport bottlenecks
Reusing rocket hardware can improve vehicle economics and support more frequent launches. NASA says reusability allows the most expensive rocket parts to be flown again and can lower the cost of access to space. NASA also describes capture and reuse of Electron’s first stage as a way to increase launch frequency without expanding production. NASA Launch Services Program

Those gains address vehicle production and cost; they do not themselves add range-tracking capacity, electrical power, commodity storage, transport to pads, or shared launch equipment. Reuse can therefore increase the importance of infrastructure that must support the higher tempo.

- BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
- REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
- SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
- STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
- RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.
How to read claims about a launch boom
- Check whether the number is observed or anticipated. NASA’s 2020–2025 launch increases are historical figures; SpaceX’s Florida figure was an on-track statement; the Boca Chica number was proposed and reviewed; and the Vandenberg comparison was attributed to a commander.
- Ask what system is being discussed. Pads, range tracking, communications, utilities, commodities, and transportation are different resources, often shared across missions.
- Separate a site-specific warning from a global conclusion. The available figures support concern about particular U.S. locations and systems, not a common industry-wide measure of cadence growth versus infrastructure capacity.
