The right robotic pool cleaner is the one rated for your pool and its surfaces, with enough coverage and filtration for the debris you deal with. These self-contained machines can reduce routine manual vacuuming, but there is no established universal winner: models differ in pool type, dimensions, cleaning coverage, power, and maintenance needs.
What a robotic pool cleaner does
A robotic pool cleaner is an electrically powered device that moves through the water, scrubs and vacuums pool surfaces, and captures debris in its own filter. It does not rely on the pool pump as its cleaning power source. Maytronics describes corded models as receiving low-voltage power through a floating cable; after a cleaning cycle, the filter should be rinsed. Maytronics’ explanation of robotic pool cleaners is a manufacturer overview, not an independent performance comparison.

How to choose a cleaner for your pool
Match the pool type and dimensions
Start with the exact model’s approved pool type—inground or above-ground—and its stated size, depth, and shape limits. A cleaner intended for one category is not automatically suitable for another. Check the model documentation against your pool’s actual dimensions rather than relying on a broad product description.

Confirm which surfaces it cleans
Floor cleaning is common, but wall climbing, waterline scrubbing, and cleaning steps or ledges vary by model. If you need the robot to reach a tile line, built-in steps, or a tanning ledge, look for that capability in the exact model’s specifications. Do not assume that a claim such as “full coverage” includes every surface in your pool.

Choose filtration for the debris you encounter
Compare filter design and capacity with the debris your pool typically collects, such as leaves, grit, or finer particles. The available product information does not support a reliable cross-brand micron or debris-pickup comparison, so treat specific filtration and performance claims as manufacturer statements unless independent testing is available. Also check how the filter is accessed and cleaned.
Weigh a cable against battery planning
A corded robot avoids a battery-runtime limit, but its floating cable needs to be managed. A cordless model removes the cable from the pool area but requires sufficient runtime for the pool and time to recharge. Check the exact model’s documented cycle and charging details; neither power style is best for every pool or household.

Check upkeep and support before buying
Look into filter cleaning, brushes and tracks that may wear, warranty terms, and whether the manufacturer supports the specific model. If you expect to replace parts, verify that filters, brushes, or drive tracks are compatible with the exact model rather than assuming similarly named products share parts.
Manufacturer-listed examples—not a ranking
Current manufacturer listings illustrate why pool category matters. Maytronics lists the Dolphin Nautilus AG as an above-ground robotic cleaner on its U.S. product page. Pentair lists the Prowler 930W and 920 as inground cleaners and the Prowler 910 as an above-ground cleaner. Pentair describes its robots as having a top-access filter basket; that is a manufacturer feature statement, not an independently verified advantage.

Follow the care instructions for your own model. Maytronics advises removing its robot during chemical shock treatment, rinsing the filter after use, rinsing chemical residue from the exterior, checking brushes and tracks for wear, and storing the unit out of direct sunlight. Chemical treatment and storage instructions can differ by model, so use the manufacturer’s guidance for your particular cleaner.
Check for a recall before using a Wybot Osprey 700 Max or S1
On April 9, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of certain Wybot Osprey 700 Max and S1 robotic pool vacuums because their lithium-ion batteries can overheat, creating burn and fire hazards. The notice identifies Osprey 700 Max models WY3312MAX and WY100MAX and S1 model WY200, but says only units with serial numbers listed in its recall table are affected. It reports about 5,000 units, 10 reports of overheating or fire, nine reports of property damage, and no reported injuries at the time of the notice. Owners of affected units were instructed to stop using them and contact Wybotics for a free replacement WYBOT C2. Check the CPSC notice for the listed serial numbers and current remedy details; the recall does not apply automatically to every unit bearing one of those model numbers.
