Yes, some humanoid-robot videos show real work, but a movement clip is not proof that a robot is generally reliable or autonomous. The clearest evidence in this set is Agility Robotics’ Digit entering regular warehouse operations for GXO Logistics at a SPANX facility on June 5, 2024. Digit moved totes from cobots and placed them on conveyors, with Agility Arc coordinating the workflow. Other clips show impressive research, medical, construction, quadruped and delivery robots, but they represent different tasks and maturity levels.
What the videos actually prove
A video establishes what the robot achieved in the recorded scene: a particular object, route, speed, environment and level of supervision. It does not by itself establish all-day reliability, broad autonomy, safety certification or commercial deployment.

IEEE Spectrum’s June 28, 2024 “Video Friday: Humanoids Get a Job” illustrates the range. Its roundup includes humanoids, quadrupeds, medical robots, construction machines, research platforms and other demonstrations. Treating every clip as evidence of the same capability makes comparisons misleading.

Three questions to ask of any clip
- What task and environment are shown? Carrying a tote in a structured warehouse is different from running outdoors, climbing stairs or manipulating a medical instrument.
- Who is controlling it? The robot may be autonomous, remotely operated, guided by imitation learning, or using a mixture that is not obvious from edited footage.
- Is there dated deployment evidence? A named customer, a defined workflow and a date provide stronger evidence than an undated laboratory demonstration.
What Agility Digit does at GXO
Agility Robotics says Digit completed its first day of work for GXO Logistics on June 5, 2024, as part of regular operations. The GXO and Agility announcement dated June 27, 2024 describes the SPANX-facility job precisely: Digit moved totes from cobots and placed them onto conveyors, while Agility Arc orchestrated the work.

That makes this a meaningful milestone, not a claim that Digit can perform every warehouse job. The agreement followed a proof-of-concept pilot in late 2023. Agility and GXO called it the first formal commercial deployment of humanoid robots and the first humanoid Robots-as-a-Service deployment. Adrian Stoch, GXO’s chief automation officer, described the move as deploying “fully operational Digit humanoids into a live warehouse environment” after the pilot.
Why the tote-to-conveyor task matters
The workflow sits between fixed automation and human labor. A robot has to approach a tote, grasp it, maintain balance, carry it and place it accurately while operating near other machines. The value is not a flashy movement; it is repeating a defined handoff inside a production process.
Digit is described as a multi-purpose, human-centric robot intended for logistics and repetitive tasks. “Human-centric” means its form is designed for spaces and workflows built around people, not that it can safely or independently perform every human activity.

How Robot Videos Compare
| Video type | Capability being demonstrated | What it does not establish | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digit at GXO | Moving totes from cobots to conveyors in a live warehouse workflow | Universal warehouse autonomy or performance in every facility | Dated customer deployment |
| Humanoid research demonstrations | Walking, balancing, manipulation or learned motions | Production reliability, uptime or paid operation | Usually laboratory or staged demonstration |
| Quadruped and agile-robot clips | Terrain mobility, running, climbing or inspection | Human-like manipulation or warehouse economics | Task-specific demonstration |
| Medical and construction robots | Specialized manipulation or work in a controlled professional setting | Transfer to logistics or general-purpose use | Depends on the named system and deployment |
| Delivery-robot footage | Moving goods along a defined route | Unsupervised operation in all weather, traffic or building layouts | Look for an identified operator, route and customer |
Which robot is the most agile?
There is no single winner without defining “agile.” Agility can mean fast running, stable walking, recovery from a push, climbing, precise manipulation or adapting to clutter. A quadruped may outperform a humanoid on rough terrain, while a humanoid may fit a workplace designed for two-legged workers and human-height shelves.
A practical comparison scorecard
- Mobility: Can it walk, turn, balance, run, climb or recover from disturbances?
- Manipulation: Can it grasp varied objects, control force and place items accurately?
- Adaptation: Does it handle changes in lighting, floor conditions, object position and traffic?
- Autonomy: How much of the task runs without a remote operator or human intervention?
- Safety: Are people sharing the workspace, and what speed, separation and stop controls are used?
- Operational proof: Is there a dated customer deployment, or only a demonstration?
- Integration: Can fleet software schedule jobs, assign robots and connect to warehouse systems?
Using this scorecard prevents a fast obstacle-course run from being compared directly with a paid warehouse shift. The “most agile” machine is the one that performs the target job safely and repeatedly under its real operating constraints.
Are these robots autonomous or teleoperated?
Video alone rarely answers that question. A system can navigate and manipulate autonomously while receiving occasional human help for exceptions. Another can be remotely driven for the difficult portions and autonomous for routine travel. Imitation learning may produce a motion policy that still depends on supervisors, safeguards or recovery procedures.

For Digit at GXO, the public descriptions establish the workflow and Arc’s fleet orchestration role, not a blanket claim that every action is fully autonomous. Axios reported in March 2024 that Arc was a cloud platform for commanding fleets, including scheduling robots to move bins to conveyors. That is evidence of software coordination, not proof that no human oversight exists.
Clues that reveal the control model
- Look for an operator station, joystick, cameras or a person following the robot.
- Check whether the video shows recovery from misplaced objects, blocked paths or unexpected people.
- Note whether the footage is continuous or heavily edited around successful attempts.
- Prefer statements that identify the autonomy scope, intervention rate and operating conditions.
Why fleet software is as important as the robot
A warehouse does not need one impressive machine; it needs a coordinated process. Agility Arc is presented as the cloud platform that runs Digit fleets. Scheduling jobs, assigning robots, monitoring status and connecting the robot’s action to conveyors or other automation determine whether a demonstration can become useful capacity.
This is why the GXO example matters beyond the robot’s legs. Digit was inserted into an existing cobot-and-conveyor workflow rather than shown as an isolated machine. Integration also exposes practical constraints—traffic, charging, exception handling, maintenance and handoff timing—that short clips usually omit.

What “commercial deployment” means here
Commercial deployment means a customer has put the system into an operating business process under an agreement; it does not mean the technology is universally available or ready for every site. Agility and GXO’s 2024 announcement describes the arrangement as Robots-as-a-Service, so the customer relationship includes the service and operational model as well as the hardware.
Axios reported contemporaneous testing by Amazon and deployment at a SPANX warehouse through GXO. Those reports describe the situation at the time and should not be read as a guarantee of later expansion. Axios also reported Agility’s plan for a manufacturing facility that could eventually produce 10,000 two-legged robots annually; that was a planned capacity, not a delivered production result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNumbers and claims to interpret carefully
Agility Robotics’ current homepage reports 65,000 hours of real production experience for Digit and identifies Arc as the cloud platform that runs fleets. This is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited statistic, so it should be read as Agility’s current claim.

The 2024 GXO/Agility release says GXO has more than 130,000 team members across more than 970 facilities totaling approximately 200 million square feet. Those figures describe the deployment partner’s scale; they do not measure Digit’s performance.
How to judge a robot-delivery video before trusting it
- Identify the machine and source. A named manufacturer and dated publication are stronger than reposted footage.
- Write down the exact job. “Moves totes from cobots to conveyors” is verifiable; “does warehouse work” is too broad.
- Separate motion from throughput. Ask how many items, for how long, with what intervention rate and failure handling.
- Check the surroundings. Shared human workspaces, barriers, speed limits and emergency stops affect the safety claim.
- Look for workflow software. Fleet scheduling and system integration often determine whether multiple robots can operate productively.
- Classify maturity. Mark the clip as research, pilot, customer trial or regular commercial operation.
What remains unknown from most videos
- Long-run uptime, maintenance intervals and battery or charging performance.
- Cost per handled item and whether the robot beats available labor or fixed automation.
- How often remote operators intervene and how exceptions are resolved.
- Performance across different warehouses, lighting, floor surfaces, tote sizes and product weights.
- Independent safety results and the conditions under which people can work nearby.
The Bottom Line
The strongest evidence in this group is dated and specific: Digit performed a defined tote-to-conveyor job in GXO’s live SPANX warehouse operation on June 5, 2024. Use that standard—named task, customer, date, supervision, safety controls and fleet integration—when judging claims about agile humanoids, delivery robots or any other viral robot video.
