For delicate baseboards, ornate molding, or easily marked trim, a manual vacuum with a soft-bristle dusting brush is usually the safer choice. You control its direction and pressure, and can keep hard plastic edges off the finish. A robot may be convenient, but edge-following can involve light contact, and obstacle sensors do not prevent every bump. This is a practical recommendation based on cleaning guidance and manufacturer documentation—not a head-to-head test of trim damage.
Why a robot can still touch trim
Edge-following often brings a robot close to walls and baseboards. Xiaomi says light bumps against baseboards or dark walls are normal for its S40 Pro while it follows edges: Xiaomi’s S40 Pro support guidance. That example applies to the named model; it does not establish how every robot behaves.

Obstacle avoidance also has limits. Xiaomi says its line-laser system may miss cables, reflective or very bright surfaces, and black objects, and recommends restricted zones where movement could scratch furniture: Xiaomi’s obstacle-avoidance guidance. Sensors can reduce risk, but they are not a guarantee that the robot will never touch trim or nearby objects.

A person using a manual vacuum can guide the attachment along the surface, regulate pressure, and stop if the brush catches or the tool’s rigid edge approaches the finish. Consumer Reports recommends a soft-bristle dusting brush for gentle cleaning around picture frames and ornate mantelpieces: Consumer Reports’ guide to vacuum attachments. For baseboards, it recommends a dusting attachment or duster to remove hair and dust: Consumer Reports’ baseboard-cleaning advice.

Choose a soft brush that fits your vacuum, and move it gently along the trim. Keep rigid plastic parts from rubbing against the finish. Soft bristles make the tool gentler, but they do not make every attachment or technique scratch-proof.
What to check before using either vacuum
| Factor | Manual vacuum | Robot vacuum |
|---|---|---|
| Contact and control | You control direction and pressure; use a soft dusting brush and keep hard edges clear of the trim. | Edge-following may involve contact; behavior varies by model. |
| Obstacle handling | You can see and respond to fragile objects as you work. | Sensors may miss some objects or surfaces; check the exact model’s support information. |
| Area restrictions | You can simply avoid a fragile section. | Some models offer app-based avoid areas or restricted zones; availability depends on the model. |
| Brush control near floors | Check whether the motorized brush roll can be switched off for hard floors. | Check whether brush-bar control is available and can be applied in the relevant area. |
Do not treat edge-cleaning claims as proof that a robot is damage-free. Check the manual or official support page for the specific model you own or are considering.

How to lower the risk
For delicate trim, use a manual vacuum
- Fit a soft-bristle dusting attachment, checking that its connector is compatible with your vacuum.
- Guide the brush lightly along the trim, keeping the attachment’s rigid parts away from the finish.
- Stop if the brush catches, the tool presses against an edge, or the finish appears to be marking.
If you use a robot, limit where it can go
- Check the robot’s manual or official support page to confirm whether it supports restricted or avoid areas.
- Set a restricted area around especially fragile trim where the app allows it.
- Clear fragile floor-level objects and observe the first run; adjust boundaries if the robot makes unwanted contact.
These precautions reduce exposure, but neither approach guarantees that every mark or collision can be prevented.

When vacuuming the floor beside trim, the motorized brush roll is a separate consideration from the attachment used on the trim itself. Consumer Reports recommends turning a motorized brush roll off or using a soft roller to reduce the risk of floor scratches, and notes that brush-roll shutoff can help on uncarpeted floors: Consumer Reports’ vacuum-buying guidance and Consumer Reports’ vacuum cleaner buying guide.
