Roborock S8 vs. Roomba: What the Robot Vacuum Can—and Can’t—Do Better

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original Roborock S8 can do several things older Roombas could not, especially sonic mopping, automatic mop lifting over carpet, and structured-light obstacle avoidance. But “things Roomba can’t” is no longer a fair blanket claim: the Roomba Combo j7+ and newer models offer overlapping capabilities. The right comparison depends on the exact Roomba—and on whether you mean the standard S8, not an S8+ or an Ultra model.

What the original Roborock S8 does differently

This article concerns the standard Roborock S8: a robot vacuum and mop with a conventional charging dock. Its defining combination is two rubber rollers, advertised 6,000Pa suction, a vibrating VibraRise mop, carpet-aware mop lifting, Reactive 3D obstacle avoidance, and LiDAR-based mapping with room and zone controls. Roborock describes those features on its S8 product page.

The most meaningful distinctions from many older Roombas are not the suction number or brush count by themselves. They are the way the S8 combines active mopping, carpet detection, obstacle sensing, and map-based control in one robot. Those are practical advantages over older vacuum-only robots and some simpler hybrid models, but not unique advantages over every Roomba sold today.

VibraRise scrubs rather than simply dragging a damp cloth

The S8’s VibraRise mop vibrates against hard flooring. That active motion can help with light dried-on marks compared with a passive cloth dragged behind a robot. It remains maintenance mopping, not a substitute for hand-scrubbing heavy grease, sticky spills, or set-in stains. The single pad on the base S8 gets dirty and must be removed and washed; otherwise, it can spread dirty moisture through later rooms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roborock’s support documentation distinguishes the standard S8 and S8+ VibraRise setup from the upgraded dual-vibration arrangement on the S8 Pro Ultra: S8-series mopping systems. Do not assume that the standard S8 washes or dries its own pad.

The 30 adjustable water levels help the robot vacuum cleaner adapt to all floor types, from delicate hardwoods to tiles. The 10mm lift feature allows it to seamlessly transition to low-pile carpets, ensuring no wet messes and complete cleaning versatility.

It lifts the mop over detected carpet

When carpet is detected, the S8 can lift its mop pad from the floor. Roborock lists the S8 among the models with automatic carpet mop lifting in its carpet-mopping support guidance. This avoids having to remove a mop attachment or run separate vacuum-only and mop-only missions every time a robot crosses a carpet.

Lifting is not the same as retracting the mop completely onto the robot. A wet pad may still be too close to thick pile, and carpet detection can be unreliable with some dark, reflective, thin, patterned, or unusual rugs. Watch the first few runs; if a rug is at risk, set a no-mop zone in the app or keep it out of the mopping route.

Reactive 3D sensing helps it navigate around clutter

Roborock says the S8 uses structured light and infrared imaging for Reactive 3D obstacle avoidance, intended to identify objects in bright and dark rooms. The system can help it steer around shoes, toys, cables, and other floor clutter, rather than relying only on a bumper to discover an obstacle. Roborock also claims internal testing detected objects about 5cm wide and 3cm high; that is a manufacturer test claim, not a guarantee that every household object will be recognized. See the S8 product information.

Depth-based obstacle sensing is not the same as camera-based AI classification, and neither makes a robot infallible. Thin cords, dark objects, reflective surfaces, clutter tight against walls, and items outside a sensor’s effective height can still cause trouble. Pick up cables and small toys, secure rug tassels, and never rely on the S8 to identify pet waste or liquid spills.

Brushes and suction: useful features, not a verdict

The S8 has two counter-rotating rubber rollers in its DuoRoller system. Roborock says this design is intended to improve hair pickup, reduce tangling, and increase grip on carpet. Rubber rollers can be useful in homes with shedding pets, but hair can still wrap around roller ends and bearings, which need periodic cleaning.

Dual rollers are not exclusive to Roborock: the Roomba j7 also uses two rubber brushes. Real pickup depends on the whole cleaning system—brush contact, airflow, seals, bin design, navigation passes, and floor type—not simply the number of rollers.

Roborock advertises 6,000Pa suction for the S8. Pascal ratings are manufacturer specifications, not standardized cross-brand cleaning tests. iRobot’s product material instead uses relative claims such as “Power-Lifting Suction,” measured against its own stated baseline. Those figures cannot establish which robot cleans better across brands. The S8’s performance on carpet also depends on pile, debris, selected cleaning mode, and maintenance; a high advertised Pa figure does not guarantee deep removal of embedded pet hair.

How the S8 compares with specific Roombas

“Roomba” covers vacuum-only models, hybrid robots with removable mop hardware, retractable-mop models, and newer systems. This model-by-model comparison is more useful than treating the brand as one product.

Model Mopping and carpet protection Navigation and obstacle handling What to know
Original Roborock S8 Vibrating VibraRise pad; lifts underside mop when carpet is detected. LiDAR mapping plus structured-light and infrared Reactive 3D obstacle avoidance. Base model has no automatic dirt disposal, mop washing, or drying dock. Product details: Roborock.
Older vacuum-only Roomba No built-in mopping on vacuum-only models. Capabilities vary by model and generation; do not assume modern mapping or obstacle recognition. The S8 adds a mop and carpet-aware mop lifting, but there is no single older Roomba specification that applies to the category.
Roomba Combo i5 Hybrid vacuum-and-mop design with removable mop hardware; it is not the j7+ retractable-mop mechanism. Imprint Smart Map and app controls on the listed model. Consider it if you want a simpler Roomba hybrid and accept managing its mop configuration. Details: iRobot.
Roomba Combo j7+ Retracts its mop onto the top of the robot to protect carpet; offers room-specific vacuum/mop preferences. Recognizes and avoids objects including clothes, shoes, towels, and pet waste, according to iRobot. It overlaps with several S8 capabilities and adds an automatic dirt-disposal dock. Its mop mechanism is different from the S8’s underside lift. Details: iRobot.
Roomba Max 715 and Roomba Plus 575 Combo (announced July 7, 2026) Capabilities vary by model; the Plus 575 is the combo model. iRobot’s announcement describes a newer generation with LiDAR and AI obstacle avoidance, with docking and mopping systems varying by model. These announcements show why older Roomba comparisons are not a current category-wide verdict. iRobot listed MSRPs of $699.99 for the Max 715 and $799.99 for the Plus 575 Combo; those are announced MSRPs, not necessarily current sale prices. Details: iRobot’s July 7, 2026 announcement.

The j7+ makes the headline’s absolute claim untenable. It has dual rubber brushes, room-specific cleaning preferences, obstacle recognition, carpet protection, automatic dirt disposal, and back-and-forth SmartScrub mode. Its top-mounted mop retraction is mechanically different from the S8’s lift-from-the-floor approach. Which design suits a home better depends partly on rug thickness and layout, not just the word “automatic.”

Mapping and app control in daily use

The S8’s LiDAR mapping and app controls let you direct a clean by room or zone, set schedules, and define invisible walls, no-go areas, and no-mop areas. Those controls are useful for targeting crumbs around a dining table, keeping the robot away from cords or a pet’s feeding station, or running vacuum-only missions through carpeted rooms. Roborock outlines its app and mapping features on the S8 product page.

Roomba models with mapping also support room selection and app scheduling; the Combo j7+ page describes separate vacuuming and mopping preferences by room. A map-based app is therefore not, by itself, an S8-only advantage. Features and labels can differ by model, app version, firmware, and region, so confirm a specific capability for the exact robot you are considering.

What you still have to do by hand with the base S8

The standard S8 is not a hands-free floor-care system. Its conventional dock charges the robot but does not provide the automation of the S8+ or Ultra docks. Expect to:

  • Refill its water tank and remove and wash the mop cloth.
  • Clean the rollers, roller ends, and side brush.
  • Maintain the filter, sensors, and charging contacts.
  • Free it from stuck objects or recover it from navigation problems.

Frequent mopping can mean frequent pad washing; a dirty pad is a poor tool for cleaning the next room. The S8+ adds automatic dirt disposal, while Ultra-style models add more dock functions such as mop washing and water handling. Those are separate configurations, not standard-S8 features.

Which S8-family model are you buying?

The suffix matters because it changes the dock and ownership workload. Roborock’s support page describes the mopping-system differences between the base S8, S8+, and S8 Pro Ultra; the S8 MaxV Ultra page represents another, more automated configuration.

Model name What the name means for a buyer
Roborock S8 Robot vacuum/mop with a conventional charging dock; manual bin, water, and mop care.
Roborock S8+ S8 platform with automatic dirt disposal; do not assume the dock washes and dries the mop.
Roborock S8 Pro Ultra Ultra dock functions and an upgraded dual-vibration mopping arrangement; not the same setup as the base S8.
Roborock S8 Max Ultra / S8 MaxV Ultra Different higher-end configurations with more comprehensive docks and newer systems. Check the exact model page for its included functions; the names are not interchangeable with the standard S8.

How it performs across a home

Mostly hard floors

The S8’s combination of scheduled vacuuming, targeted rooms, and vibrating mop is suited to routine dust, crumbs, and light marks. For sticky or greasy spills, spot-clean manually. Wash the cloth as it picks up dirt rather than letting a saturated pad travel through the home. Round robots also leave some residue in inside corners and tight edges; a handheld or conventional vacuum remains useful there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixed floors and rugs

Automatic mop lifting makes mixed flooring more convenient than a hybrid that requires a mop attachment change. It is still worth checking the first carpet crossings, especially with thick, dark, patterned, reflective, or unusually textured rugs. Create a no-mop zone where detection or lift height is not dependable. Thick shag, tassels, and loosely woven rugs can also snag rollers or complicate navigation.

Homes with shedding pets or children

The dual rubber rollers and obstacle sensing make the S8 a plausible option for routine pet hair and household clutter, but they do not make it pet-proof. Inspect roller ends for wrapped hair, keep pet food and litter areas clear, and remove accidents before a run. iRobot advertises pet-waste avoidance and a model-specific promise for the Combo j7+ subject to its terms; no equivalent blanket guarantee is established for the S8. Never treat any robot’s avoidance as a substitute for checking the floor.

Which robot should you buy?

  • Choose the original S8 if active sonic mopping, underside mop lifting, detailed mapping, and a discounted purchase price matter more to you than dock automation—and you are willing to wash the pad and empty the bin.
  • Choose an S8+ or an Ultra model if you want to reduce specific maintenance tasks. Check the exact dock: the S8+ addresses dirt disposal, while Ultra configurations add mop and water-management functions.
  • Consider a Roomba Combo j7+ if top-mounted mop retraction, iRobot’s app ecosystem, or its model-specific pet-waste terms are priorities. Compare its live price and included dock with the S8 configuration you would actually buy.
  • Consider the newer 2026 Roombas if you want a current-generation model with the features described in iRobot’s announcement. Compare the exact robot and dock, not just its headline suction or category label.
  • Buy neither if your home has many snag-prone rugs, frequent spills or pet accidents, difficult thresholds, or an expectation of zero maintenance. A robot is not a replacement for deep manual scrubbing or reliable cleanup of liquid messes.

Bottom line: the S8’s strengths are real, but Roomba has caught up in important areas

The standard Roborock S8 remains compelling when its vibrating mop, carpet-aware lift, dual rollers, and map controls match your home—and when its price reflects that it is a base robot without an automated mop-care dock. It is meaningfully different from many older Roombas, but the Combo j7+ already overlaps on several headline features, and iRobot announced a newer generation in July 2026. Compare exact models and dock functions rather than buying on the claim that Roomba cannot do what the S8 does.
