If you mean the address websites see, check your public IP in a browser instead; it is not usually the same address.
Find your local IP address with Command Prompt
- Open Start, type
cmdor Command Prompt, and select Command Prompt. You can also press Windows key + R, entercmd, and press Enter. - Type
ipconfigand press Enter. - Find the adapter carrying your connection, usually Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter Ethernet. Read the value next to IPv4 Address.
That IPv4 address is normally your computer’s local address on the current network. Microsoft says ipconfig displays adapter IP addresses, subnet masks, and default gateways: ipconfig command reference.
Example output might look like this; the numbers are illustrative and will differ on your network:
Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.24
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1Do not automatically choose the first address listed. Windows can show disconnected, virtual, VPN, Bluetooth, and tunnel adapters as well as the connection you are using.

Find it in Windows Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet.
- Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, depending on how the PC is connected.
- Select the connected network, open Properties, and find IPv4 address.
Microsoft documents this route for Wi-Fi and Ethernet in Windows: Essential network settings and tasks in Windows. Labels can vary somewhat across Windows 10 releases and device configurations. On some older builds, network details may appear under Hardware properties or a similarly named screen. If you cannot find the field, use ipconfig.
Local IP, public IP, and router address: which one do you need?
An IP address identifies a device or network interface for communication, and one Windows PC may have several addresses at once. The right one depends on what you are trying to do.

- For a printer, file sharing, or another device on your home or office network: use the IPv4 address under the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter. Common private IPv4 ranges include
10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255,172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255, and192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255. Networks do not all use these ranges or IPv4. - To open your router’s settings: use Default Gateway, which is commonly the router’s local address. It is different from the PC’s IPv4 address.
- For the address internet services see: find your public IP using a browser-based IP lookup or the router’s Internet, WAN, or Status page. A public IP is generally associated with the router or internet connection, not assigned directly to the PC.
- For a VPN-related task: clarify whether the other person needs your physical Wi-Fi/Ethernet address, the VPN tunnel address, or the public address seen through the VPN. They are not interchangeable.
A VPN or proxy can change how internet traffic is routed, so an online lookup may show an address different from the one assigned to the physical network adapter. Windows has separate VPN and proxy settings; see Microsoft’s proxy server instructions and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance. Public IPs can also change over time.
What the other fields mean

Use ipconfig /all for adapter details
For more than the basic address list, run ipconfig /all in Command Prompt. It shows full TCP/IP configuration for all adapters, including adapter descriptions, physical addresses, DHCP status and server, DNS servers, lease information, and IPv4/IPv6 details. This is useful when troubleshooting, but its extra fields can make it harder to spot the address you need.

If the address is missing or unexpected
You see an address beginning with 169.254
An address in the 169.254.x.x range often means Windows did not receive a usable address from the network’s DHCP service. It is a clue, not proof of one particular fault. Check the connection and router before changing network settings. Microsoft includes this kind of address in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
No IPv4 address appears
The adapter may be disconnected or disabled, unable to obtain an address, or using IPv6 without an IPv4 address. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled or the Ethernet cable is connected, then confirm Windows can connect to the intended network. If the PC is on a managed or specialized network, ask its administrator before changing settings.

Several addresses appear
Wi-Fi and Ethernet can both be active, and VPNs or virtual-machine software can add adapters. Match the adapter name to the connection used for the task. If you are unsure which physical connection is active, temporarily disconnect the unused Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and run ipconfig again. A 127.0.0.1 address is loopback—it refers to the same PC, not an address for other devices to use. An IPv6 address beginning with fe80:: is link-local and is limited to the local network segment.
Renew a DHCP address only when troubleshooting
If the connection is having an address-assignment problem, try these commands in Command Prompt:

- Run
ipconfig /releaseto release the current DHCP-assigned IPv4 configuration. - Run
ipconfig /renewto request a new DHCP configuration.
These commands affect the network configuration; they are not needed just to look up an address. ipconfig /flushdns clears the DNS resolver cache, but does not find or change the computer’s IP address. Microsoft documents these options in the ipconfig command reference.
If the address still does not appear, check whether another device can connect to the same router and whether the router or internet service is down. A local IP may change when a device reconnects or a DHCP lease changes. For a device that needs a stable local address, a router DHCP reservation is often an alternative to manually setting a static IP. Manual configuration requires matching the network’s subnet, gateway, and DNS settings.
Finding an IP does not enable remote access
An address alone does not make a PC reachable from outside its local network. Remote access may also depend on the service being enabled, account permissions, firewall rules, router configuration, and whether the public connection is reachable. Do not turn off Windows Firewall just to make a connection work; Microsoft explains that it filters network traffic using factors including addresses, ports, applications, and network profiles in its Firewall and network protection guidance. Avoid posting network details publicly unless they are needed for legitimate support.
