A robo-advisor is a digital investment-advice service model; “AI financial advisor” describes the use of a technology, not one standardized kind of service. A robo-advisor may collect your goals and risk tolerance to build and manage a portfolio, while an AI-labelled tool might offer only explanations or recommendations—or do something else entirely. To compare them, look past the labels and check what the service actually does, how much human help it provides, what it costs, and whether the firm is registered to provide investment advice.
What the two labels mean
Robo-advisor: an automated investment-advice service
The SEC describes robo-advisers as registered investment advisers that use computer algorithms to provide online investment-advisory services, often with limited human interaction. A typical service asks about goals, time horizon, assets, and risk tolerance, then uses those inputs to create or manage a portfolio. Services differ in their features and investment approaches. AI financial advisor: a technology description
“AI financial advisor” does not identify a single standardized service category. AI may be used in an investment process or to answer questions, but the label alone does not establish that a tool provides personalized advice, manages a portfolio, has authority to trade, or gives access to a human professional. In February 2026, SEC Division of Investment Management Director Craig W. Daly discussed the possibility of an AI agent answering investor questions using fund disclosures. He raised questions about marketing, registration, and supervision; his remarks were his own official-capacity perspective, not necessarily the Commission’s position or an adopted SEC policy. Daly’s February 3, 2026 remarks

| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Service scope | Does it explain financial concepts, make recommendations, construct a portfolio, monitor it, or place trades? If it trades, does it have discretionary authority? |
| Human support | Can you speak with an investment professional, or is help limited to technical support? Which channels are available, how often, and do account-size requirements apply? |
| Personalization | What financial details does it request? Does it account for other investments, taxes, debts, liquidity needs, and changes in your goals? How can you update your profile? |
| Investment approach | What assumptions and investment choices does it use? Is its recommendation limited to certain investments or affiliated products? |
| Total cost | Are charges asset-based, subscription, hourly, or otherwise calculated? What fund expenses or other charges come on top, and how does the cost change with your balance? |
| Terms and conflicts | How is the provider or its staff compensated for recommendations? What do the agreement and disclosures say about conflicts, privacy, cancellation, liquidation, and transferring your assets? |
Automated tools can leave out important circumstances, rely on inaccurate or limited assumptions, or fail to reflect changing goals. Read the provider’s disclosures and terms rather than assuming that a detailed questionnaire makes the recommendation complete. SEC and FINRA guidance on automated investment tools
Check U.S. registration and disclosures
In the United States, a robo-adviser that is a registered investment adviser is subject to the Investment Advisers Act’s substantive and fiduciary obligations. That regulatory point applies to registered investment advisers, not automatically to every app, chatbot, educational tool, AI-labelled product, or service outside the United States. The SEC’s 2017 guidance describes the robo-adviser model; verify the specific provider’s status instead of inferring it from its marketing. SEC robo-adviser guidance

- Review its Form ADV and disclosures. Look for the services offered, fees, investment approach, conflicts, and any limits on human interaction.
- Check official registration records. Use the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database where applicable, and review registration and disciplinary information for the firm or professional.
- Read the agreement before funding the account. Check trading authority, cancellation, cash-out, liquidation, and transfer terms, and ask how the provider or its professionals are compensated.

Investor.gov illustrates why balance matters: a $3 monthly subscription fee on a $500 account totals $36 over a year, or more than 7% of that balance. This is the SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy’s example, accessed in 2026—not an industry average or a claim about a particular provider’s current pricing. Investor.gov: Robo-Advisers
Watch for weak recommendations and AI investment pitches
Question whether the tool has enough context
A recommendation is only as useful as the information the tool requests and correctly interprets. SEC and FINRA guidance notes that an automated tool may not account for factors such as your age, needs, investment experience, other holdings, tax situation, liquidity needs, risk tolerance, time horizon, or changing goals. It may also rely on assumptions that do not fit you or consider only a limited set of investments. SEC and FINRA guidance on automated investment tools

Treat guaranteed returns as a warning
A joint SEC, NASAA, and FINRA alert cautions investors about purported AI investment scams, including pitches promising high or guaranteed returns with little or no risk. An AI label does not verify a firm, platform, or performance claim. Check the person or firm through appropriate official registration resources before investing. Joint SEC, NASAA, and FINRA alert
Which option may fit your needs?
- Consider a robo-adviser if you want an online service specifically designed to build or manage an investment portfolio and its investment approach, fees, and support fit your needs.
- Consider an AI-assisted tool only after confirming its actual function. If you need portfolio management, verify that it offers that service and check who provides it, what authority the provider has, and what human support is available.
- Look for human advice if your circumstances require discussion or the service’s assumptions do not reflect your needs. Confirm whether access to an investment professional is included or depends on the account or service format.
There is no established apples-to-apples statistic here for the prevalence, returns, accuracy, or cost savings of robo-advisers versus services described as AI financial advisors. Compare the specific provider’s documented features and terms rather than assuming one label delivers better results.
