For U.S. retail customers, neither Robinhood Crypto nor Coinbase has one universal trading cost or one universally better setup. Robinhood’s published 0.00%–0.95% fee range applies to eligible exchange-routed orders, while standard app and web classic orders may use market-maker routing whose economics are reflected in the spread. Coinbase separates spread-inclusive Simple Trade from Coinbase Advanced’s maker/taker order book. Both platforms describe custodial storage; neither account gives you direct control of its private keys.
The useful comparison is the full order preview, the tools and transfers available to your account, and whether you want a custodial account or a separate self-custody wallet. Fees, features, and asset availability can vary by account, interface, and location. The fee examples below were checked October 7, 2026, and dated regional rates are identified as such.

How Robinhood Crypto and Coinbase fees work
A posted fee is only one part of a crypto trade’s cost. The quoted price, spread, order type, routing, conversion, and any withdrawal network fee can all matter. To compare the platforms fairly, use the same asset, order size, order type, and execution settings, and review each platform’s order preview at roughly the same time.

Robinhood Crypto: routing determines which pricing applies
Robinhood lists 0.00%–0.95% fee tiers for eligible exchange-routed crypto orders, based on trailing 30-day volume. The company says maker/taker pricing is being rolled out gradually, so the fee structure a customer sees may depend on eligibility, interface, asset, order, and routing. Market and stop orders are takers. A limit or stop-limit order may be a maker if it rests on the book, or a taker if it matches immediately. Only eligible exchange-routed orders count toward the tier volume; standard app orders with market-maker routing, web classic orders, and certain other orders do not. Check Robinhood’s crypto fee-tier details and the order preview for your account.

Routing also affects the economics. Robinhood says market-maker routing is the default for standard app and web classic orders. For every $100 notional executed through that routing, Robinhood Crypto received $0.95 from its market maker as of June 15, 2026; the company says that amount is included in the spread. Robinhood does not disclose the names of its partner market makers. Exchange routing is available for supported crypto and eligible interfaces; Robinhood says it receives no rebate from partner exchanges for those orders. Neither route guarantees a better execution price. See Robinhood’s routing explanation.
That is why “free” is not a safe blanket description of Robinhood crypto trading. The 0.00%–0.95% range is for eligible exchange-routed tiers, not a universal all-in cost. Compare the estimated execution price and any fee together.

Coinbase: Simple Trade and Advanced price differently
Coinbase Simple Trade may include a spread in the quoted price, including on crypto-to-crypto conversions. Coinbase Advanced uses an order book and says it does not include a spread; it charges maker/taker fees according to the product and the account’s fee tier. Market orders and immediately matched portions of orders are takers. A resting order can receive maker treatment; for a partially matched order, the filled-now portion is charged as taker and the remainder that rests is charged as maker. Coinbase says current fees and tier criteria are shown on the signed-in account page and can change. Check the Advanced fee details and your live account pricing.
Coinbase announced updated Advanced fee examples on September 16, 2026. Its listed entry-level spot maker/taker examples were 0.50%/0.90% in the U.S., 0.25%/0.50% in the EU and UK, and 0.09%/0.10% in Brazil, India, and other international markets. These are dated examples, not guaranteed rates for every account or market: actual pricing depends on market, tier, account criteria, and current fees. The announcement said lower tiers begin at $10,000 in qualifying volume, with other criteria including USDC balance. Verify the live account fee page before trading. See Coinbase’s September 16, 2026 fee announcement.

Coinbase One advertises zero trading fees for eligible buys and sells, subject to limitations. A spread may still apply to certain Coinbase trades, and DEX service fees or other excluded transaction types may remain. “Zero trading fees” therefore does not by itself establish a zero-cost trade. Review the full preview and Coinbase’s fee disclosure.
A practical like-for-like fee check
- Match the trade: choose the same asset, approximate dollar amount, order type, and market on both platforms.
- Check the execution method: identify Robinhood’s routing and Coinbase’s product (Simple Trade or Advanced), along with maker/taker treatment where applicable.
- Compare the preview: record the estimated execution price, spread or price impact, and separately listed fee. A low fee line does not necessarily mean the lower total cost.
- Include the next step: if you plan to transfer crypto out, check the supported asset and network and account for the network fee.
- Keep the comparison local and dated: eligibility and pricing can vary by location and account, and Coinbase’s published examples are regional and dated.
Features, trading tools, and availability
The right feature set depends on the task: making a straightforward purchase, placing orders on an order book, using trading tools or APIs, or moving crypto to an external wallet. Neither platform’s available assets and functions should be assumed to be identical across countries, states, accounts, or interfaces.

| Use case | Robinhood Crypto | Coinbase |
|---|---|---|
| Buying and selling | Buy/sell trading, with routing and order behavior that vary by interface and eligibility. | Simple Trade and Coinbase Advanced are distinct trading flows; Simple Trade may include a spread. |
| Order-book trading | Exchange-routed orders and maker/taker treatment are described for eligible orders; rollout and access vary. | Advanced offers order-book trading with maker/taker fees, charts, and trading tools. |
| Other named options | Robinhood describes Robinhood Connect for participating wallets and decentralized applications, plus a Crypto Trading API for eligible U.S. customers. | Coinbase describes APIs and spot and derivatives products in eligible markets. |
| Moving crypto | Transfers are available for supported assets and networks, subject to restrictions. | Asset and feature availability should be checked for the customer’s market and account. |
This is a bounded comparison of named features, not a complete feature inventory. Coinbase’s spot and derivatives access, Robinhood’s API access, and each platform’s listed assets require account- and location-specific checks. Coinbase’s Advanced information describes its order-book product; Robinhood’s routing information and transfer help describe relevant routing and transfer conditions.

Both services are custodial when you hold crypto in a platform account: the platform manages the storage used to process transactions, rather than giving you direct control of the private keys. A custodial account is different from a self-custody wallet, where you control the keys. Cold storage is a storage practice, not the same thing as customer-controlled keys or a guarantee against loss.

What Robinhood says about custody
Robinhood says customer crypto is held in a Robinhood Crypto account, separate from a Robinhood Financial brokerage account. It says most customer crypto is held in cold storage, while some is kept in hot storage for operations. Robinhood also states that crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. These are Robinhood’s disclosures, not a guarantee that assets cannot be lost. See its custody information and security information.
What Coinbase says about custody
Coinbase’s user agreement describes transaction private keys as stored in a combination of online and offline storage. Coinbase Advanced states that customer assets are held 1:1 and that Coinbase does not lend them or act with them without permission. Those are Coinbase’s statements about its practices; they are not an independent guarantee and do not mean crypto is covered by FDIC deposit insurance or SIPC protection. Review the applicable Coinbase user agreement and Advanced product information.
Transfers and self-custody
Robinhood says it does not charge an additional fee to send or receive crypto, but network fees apply. Transfers depend on supported assets and networks and may be subject to restrictions. Sending crypto on-chain also carries operational risk, including selecting the wrong network or destination. Robinhood says customers can send supported assets to an external self-custody wallet to control their private keys; check the specific asset, network, and transfer details before initiating a transaction. See Robinhood’s transfer guidance.
Quick Recap
Which platform fits your priorities?
- For a simple purchase: compare the actual order previews, including the quoted price and any spread, rather than relying on a “zero fee” or commission-free label.
- For order-book trading: compare Robinhood’s eligible exchange-routed options with Coinbase Advanced’s live maker/taker rates and available tools in your account.
- For crypto transfers: confirm the exact asset and network are supported, then account for network fees and transfer restrictions.
- For direct key control: neither platform account itself is self-custody. You would need to move supported crypto to a separate wallet that you control, accepting the responsibilities and risks of managing its keys.
- For a U.S. retail account: treat the fee examples as date- and eligibility-dependent, and check current account terms before acting; readers elsewhere should verify local availability and pricing.
