On a dedicated RLCraft server, “enabling cheats” means granting operator or permission access; a regular player cannot turn it on from the client. Run /op <player> in the server console (or have an existing operator do it), reconnect, and then use commands allowed by that operator level. RLCraft 2.9.3 runs on Minecraft Java 1.12.2, so command behavior and mod compatibility are version-sensitive.

What “cheats” means in RLCraft multiplayer
RLCraft does not add a universal multiplayer switch equivalent to the single-player Allow Cheats option. On a dedicated Java server, command access is controlled by the server’s operator and permission systems. The practical sequence is:

If you are merely a player on someone else’s server, you cannot grant yourself operator status. The owner or an existing operator must do it, or the host must assign an equivalent permission through its own control panel. Panel labels and workflows vary by host, and the documented permission behavior does not establish a universal panel procedure.
Version and compatibility scope
This guide targets RLCraft 2.9.3 on Minecraft Java Edition 1.12.2. The RLCraft Wiki describes the pack as approximately 185 mods, or 186 with OptiFine. Commands, permission nodes and configuration files can differ in another pack release, a fork, or a server with additional plugins.
#1 Best Overall
In particular, the /rlcraft command list below comes from an older community plugin reference describing an RLCraft 1.2-era plugin. Treat it as a legacy command set, not a guarantee that every current 2.9.3 installation provides those commands. Check in-game tab completion and the mods or plugins actually installed on your server before building an administration procedure around them.
Enable command access on a dedicated server
Step 1: Identify the server console
The console is the terminal or web panel log attached to the server process. Console commands are executed with server authority and do not depend on the sender already being an operator. If your host provides only a web panel, look for its live console or command field; the exact name and layout are host-dependent.
Step 2: Grant operator status
Enter:
/op <player>
Replace <player> with the player’s exact Java username. An existing operator can issue the same command from in-game chat, but a normal player cannot. Operator status is persistent until it is removed, so use it only for trusted administrators.
Step 3: Reconnect and test a low-risk command
Have the newly promoted player leave and rejoin. Reconnection refreshes the client’s permission state and makes it easier to distinguish a permission problem from a command or mod problem. Test a command appropriate to the task rather than changing world rules immediately.
Step 4: Remove access when the task ends
When temporary administration is complete, run:
/deop <player>
Removing operator status limits the damage a compromised account or accidental command can cause. Keep a written record of who received access and why, especially on a server shared by several people.
Why /gamerule says you lack permission
On Java Edition, /gamerule requires permission level 2. Being able to join the server, use ordinary chat, or interact with blocks does not satisfy that requirement. If the command reports that you lack permission:
- Confirm that the username was granted operator status with
/opon this exact server. - Disconnect and reconnect after the promotion.
- Check that you are not connected to a different server address, world or proxy instance.
- Ask the owner to verify that your operator entry was not removed or overridden by a permissions system.
- Do not assume that enabling command blocks will grant player command access; those are separate controls.
Once permission is correct, the command’s syntax and the gamerule name still have to be valid for Minecraft Java 1.12.2 and the loaded server software.
Enable command blocks in server.properties
Command-block execution is independent of whether a player is an operator. RLCraft’s CurseForge project listing gives this warning: “Server owners be aware that enable-command-block=true must be set in your server.properties file or certain structures will not generate correctly and be missing villagers!”

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Set the property
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Open the server’s
server.propertiesfile in the server root directory. - Set the line to:
enable-command-block=true
- Save the file and start the server again.
- Check the startup log and test a command block in a safe area.
Use the exact lowercase key and value shown above. If the file contains the setting more than once, keep one authoritative entry. Back up the world before changing configuration or testing automated command contraptions.
Understand the two permissions
| Control | What it governs | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
/op <player> |
Allows a player to run commands permitted by that operator level. | It does not enable command-block execution by itself. |
enable-command-block=true |
Allows command blocks to execute and is required for certain RLCraft structures to generate correctly. | It does not make an ordinary player an operator. |
Documented RLCraft-specific commands
The following commands and permission nodes are documented for an older RLCraft plugin reference. They may be absent from a current server, particularly if the relevant plugin or mod is not installed.
| Command | Purpose | Permission node | Range or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
/rlcraft give <player> <item> |
Gives a specified item to a player. | rlcraft.command.give |
The item identifier must be accepted by the installed command implementation. |
/rlcraft thirst <player> <0-20> |
Sets a player’s thirst value. | rlcraft.command.thirst |
Use a value from 0 through 20. |
/rlcraft temperature <player> <0-25> |
Sets a player’s temperature value. | rlcraft.command.temperature |
Use a value from 0 through 25. |
/rlcraft reload |
Reloads the RLCraft configuration. | rlcraft.command.reload |
Documented as admin-only. |
The same reference lists rlcraft.command.* as a wildcard covering all of the listed RLCraft plugin permissions. A wildcard is broader than a single-purpose node, so do not assign it when an administrator needs only one function.
Verify before relying on a plugin command
- Type
/rlcraftand use the server’s tab completion, if available. - Confirm that the subcommand appears and that the server returns a usage message rather than “unknown command.”
- Check the installed mods and plugins against the version they support.
- Test on a backup or non-production world before using
reloador changing player survival values.
If tab completion does not show the command, operator status alone will not create it. The likely causes are a missing plugin, a different command namespace, or a version mismatch.

Vanilla commands versus RLCraft commands
Vanilla commands are supplied by Minecraft and are governed primarily by operator permission levels. RLCraft-specific commands are supplied by a mod or plugin and additionally require that component and its permission node to exist. These are separate failure paths:
Recommended Free Tools
| Situation | What to check first |
|---|---|
/gamerule reports no permission |
Operator status, reconnect state and Java permission level 2. |
/rlcraft is unknown |
Whether the legacy plugin or compatible implementation is installed. |
| A command is recognized but denied | The specific permission node, such as rlcraft.command.thirst. |
| A command block does nothing | enable-command-block=true, command-block setup and the command’s own syntax. |
Do not use a successful vanilla command as proof that the RLCraft plugin command set is present, and do not use a working command block as proof that your player account has elevated permissions.
Single-player and Open to LAN are different
Java single-player worlds can temporarily enable cheats through Open to LAN after the world has been created. That setting applies to the local single-player session. It is not a method for an ordinary player to grant permissions on a dedicated multiplayer server.
| World type | How command access is obtained | Persistence |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | Enable cheats when creating the world, or temporarily through Open to LAN. | Applies to that local session and world configuration. |
| Dedicated RLCraft server | Owner or existing operator runs /op <player>; plugin permissions may also be assigned. |
Operator status remains until /deop or another permissions change removes it. |
| Command block | Server owner sets enable-command-block=true. |
Controlled by server configuration, not a player’s LAN cheat toggle. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
“I enabled cheats, but my multiplayer commands still fail”
There is no client-side cheat switch that overrides a dedicated server’s permissions. Ask the owner to run /op <player> in the server console, then reconnect. If the owner will not grant operator status, request only the narrower permission needed for the task, if the server’s permissions system supports it.
Best Value
“I was opped, but /gamerule still says no permission”
Check the exact username, reconnect, and confirm that the command was sent to the intended server instance. A proxy, staging server or second world can have a different operator list. The command still must be valid for Java 1.12.2.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“/rlcraft give or /rlcraft thirst is unknown”
Those commands are tied to an older plugin reference. Verify that the corresponding plugin or mod is actually installed and compatible with your pack. Use tab completion to see what the server exposes. Do not install an unverified component on a live world solely to reproduce an old command list.
“The command exists but says I lack permission”
Operator status and plugin permissions are not interchangeable in every permissions setup. Check the node named by the command documentation, such as rlcraft.command.give or rlcraft.command.reload. Grant the narrowest node that solves the task, or use the wildcard only when full RLCraft command access is intentional.
“Command blocks are disabled”
Stop the server, confirm that enable-command-block=true appears in server.properties, save the file, and start the server again. Remember that this setting enables block execution; it does not op the player placing or editing the block.
“Structures are missing villagers”
Check the same enable-command-block=true setting. The CurseForge RLCraft listing specifically warns that leaving it disabled can prevent certain structures from generating correctly and leave them without villagers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSafe administration practices
Use least privilege
- Grant operator status only to trusted administrators.
- Prefer a single command-specific permission node over
rlcraft.command.*when the server supports granular permissions. - Remove temporary access with
/deop <player>as soon as the task is finished. - Never paste an unfamiliar command into a live world without understanding its target and scope.
Back up before changing world behavior
Make a current world backup before changing gamerules, enabling automated command systems, reloading configuration, or testing legacy plugin commands. Keep the backup separate from the live server directory so a failed change cannot overwrite the recovery copy.
Separate testing from production
A disposable test world lets you check whether a command exists, whether a permission node is recognized, and whether a command block behaves as expected. This is especially important for the older /rlcraft references, whose behavior is not guaranteed on every RLCraft 2.9.3 server.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right method
| Your goal | Correct method | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Run a vanilla administrative command on a dedicated server | Have the console or an existing operator run /op <player>, then reconnect. |
Looking for a single-player “Allow Cheats” switch. |
| Temporarily use commands in a local world | Use the Java single-player Open to LAN cheat option. | Expecting the setting to change a dedicated server. |
| Allow command blocks to execute | Set enable-command-block=true in server.properties. |
Assuming operator status alone enables blocks. |
| Change thirst or temperature through an RLCraft command | Verify the legacy plugin command and grant its specific permission node. | Assuming every RLCraft installation includes the plugin. |
| Undo temporary administrator access | Run /deop <player>. |
Leaving a broad operator grant in place indefinitely. |
Administrator checklist
- Confirm the server is RLCraft 2.9.3 on Minecraft Java 1.12.2, or document the actual version.
- Back up the world before changing rules or configuration.
- Use the server console for the initial
/op <player>grant. - Have the player reconnect before testing commands.
- Remember that Java
/gamerulerequires permission level 2. - Set
enable-command-block=truewhen command-block execution or affected RLCraft structures require it. - Verify legacy
/rlcraftcommands with tab completion and installed-component checks. - Assign the narrowest plugin permission that meets the task.
- Remove access with
/deop <player>when administration is finished.
