Quick verdict: In the published Edmunds comparison, the tested Tesla Model Y went farther than the tested Rivian R2 Performance and charged slightly quicker. Rivian lists more cargo capacity and higher maximum towing for the R2. The better fit depends on the exact trim, whether you need a third row, and the prices and running costs in your area. Pricing and specifications below were checked against the cited pages and the Edmunds comparison published September 23, 2026; figures and availability can change.
Rivian R2 vs. Tesla Model Y: trims and starting prices
These prices are not directly interchangeable: Rivian’s product page lists starting prices, while the AP-syndicated Edmunds comparison reports prices that include destination. Neither table below accounts for every option, tax, incentive or buyer-specific fee.

| Tesla Model Y lineup | 294–357 miles across versions in the Edmunds/AP comparison | Configurations vary; some versions offer a third row | Edmunds/AP reports destination-included prices from $41,380 for the base version to $63,380 for the three-row Model Y L. |
Rivian says prices and options may change. The AP/Edmunds article reported that only the priciest R2 Performance was available at the time of its comparison, with lower-priced versions expected later in 2026 and spring 2027. Those are time-sensitive schedule statements, not a guarantee of current availability. Check Rivian’s live R2 page and Tesla’s configuration page for the exact vehicle and market before comparing out-the-door prices.

For R2, Rivian lists 275 miles for Standard, 330 for Premium and 330 for Performance. The AP/Edmunds comparison also reports a 345-mile Standard Long Range version. Rivian calls its estimates preliminary and subject to change; it says they are based on the EPA test cycle but are not official EPA values. Do not treat them as certified EPA ratings.
#1 Best Overall
- Hot Wheels Tesla Model Y, HW Green Speed 1/10 [Gray] 37/250
In Edmunds’ EV Range Test, the R2 Performance covered 304 miles against its 330-mile estimate. The tested base rear-wheel-drive Model Y covered 337 miles. Those are results for the specific vehicles and test, not a promise of what every driver or configuration will achieve.
The same AP/Edmunds comparison lists Model Y ranges from 294 miles for base all-wheel drive to 357 miles for rear-wheel-drive Premium. Its Model Y L test covered 358 miles. This means the compared Model Y lineup spans higher figures at the top than the cited R2 versions, but range depends on trim and conditions; compare the exact configurations rather than treating either model as one range number. See the AP-syndicated Edmunds comparison for its test and configuration context.
Rivian R2 charging and Tesla Supercharger access
Rivian says every R2 has a NACS charge port and can use Tesla Superchargers. It advertises adding 150 miles in 15 minutes and a 10%–80% DC fast-charge session in under 30 minutes. Rivian qualifies these as variable figures: the 15-minute claim reflects optimal conditions, and charging speed depends on battery capacity, state of charge, temperature, charger capacity, weather and site conditions.

Tesla’s estimate is based on constant-speed highway efficiency; actual results vary with Supercharger type, vehicle configuration, charge state, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. Edmunds/AP reports that its test found the Model Y charged slightly quicker. The headline miles-added figures are not a controlled, same-condition comparison and should not be read as a guaranteed rate for either vehicle. Rivian’s claim and caveats are on its R2 page; Tesla’s are on its Model Y page.

Which SUV has more cargo room and passenger flexibility?
Rivian lists the five-seat R2 at 90.1 cubic feet of total storage, including 79.4 cubic feet behind the front row with the rear seats folded and 28.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats. These are Rivian’s published storage figures; compare them with care because cargo-volume methods and what is included can differ between automakers.
Edmunds/AP reports 75.5 cubic feet of total storage for the five-seat Model Y. Some Model Y configurations, including Premium and the extended Model Y L, offer a third row; when raised, those seats reduce cargo room and are better suited to children and smaller adults, according to Edmunds’ assessment. Rivian’s published R2 page lists five seats.
Edmunds/AP describes passenger space as similar overall, with somewhat more rear headroom in the R2. Its reviewers characterized the Model Y ride as smoother and the R2 ride as firmer; these are the comparison’s assessments, not universal comfort findings. Rivian lists the R2 at 185.9 inches long, 84.7 inches wide, 66.9 inches high and a 115.6-inch wheelbase. For shoppers who tow, Edmunds/AP reports a Model Y maximum of 3,500 pounds, while Rivian says the R2 can tow up to 4,400 pounds when equipped with its Tow Package.

Which costs less to own?
The available figures do not establish a universal ownership-cost winner or a like-for-like five-year total. Purchase price alone is not enough: destination, options, financing, local taxes and registration can change the comparison, while electricity, insurance, maintenance, tires and resale value depend on the driver and location.

- Made In Malaysia
Tesla says home charging can use lower-cost electricity and makes general claims about lower maintenance than a comparable gasoline vehicle. Its maintenance article gives an estimated annual Model Y maintenance range of $316–$643, varying with driving habits and model. That is Tesla’s manufacturer estimate, not an independent figure or a comparable R2 cost study. Rivian likewise notes that charging costs depend on local electricity rates and charging-network pricing, and that off-peak home charging may reduce costs.
Build a fair comparison for your household
Use the same ownership period and local assumptions for both vehicles. Gather the following for the specific trims you can buy:
- Out-the-door purchase price, including destination, selected options, taxes and registration.
- Financing rate, down payment and loan term—or the cost of capital if paying cash.
- Your local electricity rate and the expected share of charging at home versus public stations.
- Annual mileage and a realistic charging pattern for your routes.
- Insurance quotes for the exact trim and your driver details.
- Expected tire, maintenance and repair costs, plus estimated resale value at the end of your chosen ownership period.
Use actual quotes and label any estimate you cannot verify as an assumption. A different home/public charging mix or resale estimate can change which vehicle looks less expensive.
