These are dated reports, not verified conditions today; a Deoria update published October 3 described the Saryu falling while the Rapti rose.
What was reported on October 1
Hindustan Times published its regional account at 21:53 IST on October 1, 2026, citing the Central Water Commission for river readings. It said the Saryu, Rapti, Gorra and Rohin continued to rise and were above danger marks at several locations. The article reported around 107 metres at Elgin Bridge, nearly a metre above the warning level, and around 92.7 metres at Ayodhya, slightly above the danger mark. Those readings refer to specific stations and the October 1 report; they are not current readings or a common measurement for every district. Hindustan Times’ October 1 report.
Where flooding and disruption were reported
Gorakhpur and Barhalganj
The October 1 report estimated around 35 affected villages in Gorakhpur, including about 30 inundated villages around Barhalganj. It also reported nearly 40 boats deployed in Barhalganj, quoting Gorakhpur Additional District Magistrate (Finance/Revenue) Jai Prakash, and said six government primary schools were closed. Homes, farmland and roads were among the reported impacts. These counts describe the report’s estimates on that date, not a verified current tally. Hindustan Times.
Kushinagar
Hindustan Times reported an approximately 90-metre breach in the AP embankment in Khadda, with around 30 villages inundated and nearly 60,000 people affected. The report also described seepage near the breach. These are attributed estimates from October 1; subsequent repair or breach status is not established by the reports cited here.

Deoria
The October 1 account described seepage and a large hole in the Bishunpur Devar–Nurullahpur embankment. It said water entered 14 hamlets and Bhadiya was marooned. The later Deoria river update does not establish whether those embankment concerns or impacts were resolved.
The headline names Basti, but the October 1 account’s detailed village and embankment figures concern Gorakhpur, Kushinagar and Deoria. It describes the broader situation as affecting the Gorakhpur and Basti divisions; that does not establish identical effects in every district.

What changed in the October 3 Deoria update
An Amar Ujala report published October 3, 2026, said the Saryu had fallen about five centimetres in the preceding 12 hours while the Rapti had risen 10 centimetres. Those changes are from a later Deoria report and do not establish levels at every gauge or conditions across all four districts. How to check current river and district conditions
For station-specific levels, consult the Uttar Pradesh Rapti River Flood Forecasting System and check the issue date and station shown on the dashboard before relying on a number. A dated reading from one station should not be treated as a district-wide status. The dashboard record available for this article had a discrepancy between its search extract and opened page dates, so no live station readings are reproduced here.

For local warnings, access, evacuation directions or the status of an embankment, rely on current district administration and flood-control notices. The Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority describes flood as a notified disaster and outlines the state’s disaster-management role in planning, coordination, prevention, mitigation and preparedness. Where to ask for flood help in Gorakhpur
The Gorakhpur district administration says its Emergency Operation Centre receives disaster calls at 1077, coordinates with district agencies and shares rescue-operation updates. The state Relief Commissioner’s emergency-number page displays 1070 and links to district and flood-control contacts. Because the pages show different numbers and the state page advises verification of its displayed data, confirm the applicable contact and location with local authorities before relying on either number. District sensitivity is background, not a current alert
Uttar Pradesh’s 2025 flood-sensitivity classification lists Basti, Deoria and Gorakhpur as hyper-sensitive and Kushinagar as moderately sensitive. This is a planning classification, not a measure of the severity or extent of the October 2026 flooding. 2025 flood-sensitivity report.
