Measure each clip’s perceived loudness with LUFS, bring recordings into a consistent range with loudness normalization or clip gain, then listen through the playlist and adjust transitions by ear. There is no single LUFS target that suits every ambience playlist: a distant rain bed may belong lower than a close thunder recording.
Choose where to even out the levels
If you are making one edited file or want the playlist to sound consistent across different devices and apps, adjust the clips in your editing workflow before export. Playback normalization is not universal: whether it applies can depend on the platform, app, account setting, and device.
Spotify, for example, says its web player and some third-party devices do not use loudness normalization. If you rely on a streaming app to compensate for level differences, check the behavior and settings for the specific way you listen.
Match perceived loudness, not waveform height
Waveform peaks show momentary signal levels, not how loud a whole clip is likely to sound. LUFS measures perceived loudness over time, making it a more useful starting point for comparing recordings with different textures and dynamics. Audacity describes loudness normalization as one way to create an equally loud playlist from different sources.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use clip-by-clip matching for independent recordings
For ambience clips that should feel broadly consistent when played in sequence, measure and adjust each clip separately with LUFS-based loudness normalization or clip gain. Treat the result as a starting point, not a requirement to make every recording identical.
Use shared gain when the relative levels are intentional
If your sequence is designed to move from quiet to loud, applying one gain change to the entire program preserves those differences. Matching every clip independently can reduce the contrast you intended. The Audio Engineering Society distinguishes track normalization, which changes tracks separately, from album normalization, which applies one gain value across the program to preserve relative loudness.

Level clips in Audacity
- Make a copy of your project or source files. This gives you a version to return to if normalization or later gain changes undermine the intended character of a recording.
- Import the ambience clips and arrange them in listening order. Check that the joins and any overlaps are where you want them before judging the sequence.
- Select a clip or the assembled program, then open Effect > Volume and Compression > Loudness Normalization. Audacity’s manual documents this effect for measuring and setting perceived loudness. Its default target is -23 LUFS; that is the effect’s default, not a universal target for ambience playlists.
- Choose whether to normalize clips separately or together. Normalize separate clips when you want to reduce level jumps. Normalize the assembled program together when you want a shared gain change to preserve intentional differences.
- Keep linked stereo channels together when their balance is already right. Audacity’s default paired-channel behavior preserves the existing left/right balance. Normalize channels independently only when you are correcting an existing stereo imbalance.
- Listen to the full sequence, concentrating on transitions. If one clip still feels too prominent or too distant, make a small gain adjustment by ear. Recheck the transition after each change.
- Check peaks and clipping separately, then export. Loudness normalization sets a measured perceived level; peak level is a separate concern. Audacity recommends applying Loudness Normalization before export.
Use Auto-Match in Adobe Premiere Pro
If you are already editing the ambience in Premiere Pro, Adobe documents an Auto-Match workflow for clip loudness. The help page was last updated 21 January 2026.
- Select the audio clips you want to match and tag them in the Essential Sound panel.
- Expand the Loudness controls and choose Auto-Match.
- Use the displayed measured LUFS level as a guide, then play the clips in sequence and make any small creative adjustments the transitions need.
Pick a target for the destination, not by habit
There is no source-backed universal LUFS target for an ambience playlist. Targets vary with use and destination: Audacity’s effect defaults to -23 LUFS, and its manual cites -24 LUFS as a normally used US television level and -23 LUFS as an EBU recommendation in contexts including television, radio, podcasts, and websites. These are examples, not a rule for every playlist.

Spotify’s settings are specific to Spotify. For Premium listeners, Spotify reports playback targets of -14 LUFS under Normal, -11 LUFS under Loud, and -19 LUFS under Quiet. It says it adjusts individual tracks in a shuffle or multi-album playlist, while it normalizes an album together without changing the track-to-track gain compensation.
Spotify’s mastering guidance targets -14 LUFS integrated and recommends keeping true peak below -1 dBTP for its lossy formats. For masters louder than -14 LUFS, it recommends below -2 dBTP to reduce the risk of extra encoding distortion. These are Spotify-specific recommendations, not general requirements for ambience files or other destinations.

The AES TD1008 v3.13 recommendation says that, except for wide-dynamic-range content, distributors should normalize an album’s loudest track to -14 LUFS, typically resulting in about -16 LUFS integrated album loudness; when album normalization is unavailable, it recommends normalizing all tracks to -16 LUFS. Those figures describe that document’s distribution recommendations, not a universal mastering rule.

- A clip measures similarly but sounds louder. LUFS is a useful comparison, not a measure of whether a particular texture feels close, sharp, or intrusive. Lower that clip slightly and audition the transition rather than forcing the entire playlist to one measured value.
- The stereo image changes after processing. Check that paired stereo channels are being normalized together. Independent channel normalization is intended for correcting an existing imbalance and can alter the original left/right relationship.
- The result clips or has peaks that seem too high. Check peak level separately from integrated loudness. A LUFS target does not by itself set a safe peak ceiling.
- Levels differ in a streaming app despite an even export. Check whether normalization is enabled and whether the specific player or device uses it. Spotify notes that its web player and some third-party devices do not apply loudness normalization.
- The sequence has lost its quiet-to-loud shape. Undo clip-by-clip matching and use a shared gain adjustment, or reduce the amount of per-clip correction. Independent matching can flatten deliberate contrasts.
Or let it run in the cloud
