Choose a wired Ring doorbell if your home has compatible doorbell wiring and you want continuous power; choose a battery model if flexible placement matters more and you can recharge it periodically. “Wired” and “battery” cover multiple Ring generations, though, so compare the exact model names and electrical requirements rather than assuming every model has the same video, chime, or power specifications. This comparison focuses on Ring’s US product information; availability and specifications may differ by country.
Ring wired vs Ring battery: which should you buy?
| What matters | Wired Ring doorbell | Battery Ring doorbell |
|---|---|---|
| Power and placement | Requires compatible existing doorbell wiring or a transformer; provides continuous wired power. | Has a rechargeable battery and offers more flexibility where wiring is unavailable or unwanted. The cited Battery Video Doorbell can also connect to compatible wiring for continuous charging. |
| Recharging | No battery removal and recharge routine when correctly powered through compatible wiring. | Plan to remove and recharge the battery as needed. Ring’s cited specifications do not establish a guaranteed or typical interval between charges. |
| Model specifications | Vary by generation: Ring’s older Video Doorbell Wired is listed as 1080p; the newer Wired Doorbell 2K is a separate product. | Vary by model. Check the specific product’s video and field-of-view specifications rather than inferring them from the battery label. |
| Recordings | Live viewing and answering notifications are available without a subscription; saving, reviewing, and sharing captured video requires an eligible Ring plan. | Same subscription distinction: live viewing and answering are available without a subscription, while saved recordings require an eligible plan. |
For the older model’s power and video details, see Ring’s Video Doorbell Wired support page. Ring’s current video doorbell lineup includes newer models, so do not treat the older 1080p device as representative of every wired Ring doorbell.

Check your wiring before choosing a wired model
Having a doorbell button and wires at the entrance does not by itself confirm compatibility. Verify the transformer output against the requirements for the exact model you plan to buy. Ring lists different requirements for two wired generations:
Recommended Free Tools
- Video Doorbell Wired: Ring specifies an existing doorbell system or transformer rated 10–24 VAC, 40 VA maximum, 50/60 Hz for continuous power, on its support page.
- Wired Doorbell 2K: Ring’s current product lineup lists 12–24 VAC, 40 VA maximum, 50/60 Hz.
Those are model-specific figures, not interchangeable requirements. If you cannot identify your transformer’s output, check its label or ask a qualified electrician before purchasing or connecting a doorbell.

Can you hardwire a Ring battery doorbell?
Yes, for the cited Battery Video Doorbell, Ring says compatible existing wiring can provide continuous charging. Its listed requirement is 8–24 VAC, 40 VA maximum, 50/60 Hz. The device still has a built-in rechargeable battery; hardwiring it does not make it the same product as a wired-only model. Confirm that the exact battery model supports this arrangement and that your transformer meets its specifications. Ring lists the details on its Battery Video Doorbell product page.
For an installation without compatible wiring, the cited battery model can be removed for charging with its supplied removal tool. Ring’s product information does not state a guaranteed or typical time between charges, so do not plan around a fixed recharge schedule; actual timing depends on use and conditions.

Compare video and chime by full model name
Resolution and other camera specifications belong to individual models, not to the broad categories “wired” and “battery.” Ring describes the older Video Doorbell Wired as 1080p, while its current lineup includes a separate Wired Doorbell 2K. Check the product listing for each candidate’s video and field-of-view details before comparing them.
Chime behavior also depends on the model. Ring says the Wired Doorbell 2K does not activate a home’s internal chime and points buyers to Ring Chime or Chime Plus for in-home notifications. Do not assume that statement applies to every Ring wired doorbell; check the exact model’s current product information.

Do Ring doorbells need a subscription?
No subscription is required for live viewing or answering notifications, according to Ring. Saving, reviewing, and sharing captured video requires an eligible Ring plan. Plan names, recording duration, features, and availability can vary by market and change over time, so check the current plan terms for your country if recorded clips are important to your decision. A practical buying checklist
- Identify the exact model. Compare full product names and generations, not just “wired” versus “battery.”
- Check the power source. For a wired installation, confirm the transformer meets that model’s voltage, VA, and frequency requirements. For a battery model, decide whether you will recharge it or use compatible wiring for continuous charging.
- Check the camera and chime details. Verify the specific model’s video specifications and whether it activates your indoor chime.
- Decide whether you need saved clips. Live viewing and answering are available without a plan, but saved recordings require an eligible subscription.
- Confirm local details. Ring’s cited product information is for the US; verify availability, naming, electrical compatibility, and plan terms where you live.
