Ring’s first smart lock has four stated everyday entry methods: fingerprint, PIN keypad, the Ring app, and Alexa. If its battery runs down, a built-in Backup Power Dial is intended to power the keypad temporarily so you can enter a PIN. The lock was announced for U.S. availability in early 2027, but its sale remains pending.
How can you unlock the Ring Smart Lock?
Ring lists four routine ways to unlock the device:
- Fingerprint: Use the built-in fingerprint reader.
- PIN: Enter a code on the backlit touchscreen keypad.
- Ring app: Unlock through the app and review lock activity there.
- Alexa: Use Alexa voice control through supported Echo devices.
These are the four methods Ring identifies in its October 7, 2026 announcement and on the Ring Smart Lock product page. Amazon says the lock also works with Ring doorbells, cameras, and alarms.

What happens if the battery dies?
Ring’s Backup Power Dial is designed for an emergency: twist it until the keypad turns on, then enter a PIN. It is a way to restore enough power to use the keypad, not a fifth routine unlocking method. Ring has not published a battery-life estimate or independent reliability results in the launch materials.

Amazon says installation fits a standard single-cylinder deadbolt and requires no additional wiring. The lock connects through Amazon Sidewalk, which is required for use. Sidewalk relies on nearby Amazon devices, and Ring warns that coverage varies by location and can be interrupted; the launch information does not establish that remote control will be available everywhere.

- Better with Ring devices — Control your lock, cameras, doorbells, and more all in one app. Unlock during Live View and track every entry in your Event History.
- Easy battery setup — No wiring, no locksmith. Install in a few minutes with a long-lasting, rechargeable Quick Release Ultra Battery Pack.
When will it be available, and what will it cost?
Amazon announced expected U.S. availability in early 2027. As of October 9, 2026, Ring’s product page displayed a price of $249.99 and a “Notify Me” signup rather than an order option. The same page says the device has not received required FCC authorization and may not be offered for sale or lease until authorization is granted. It also says the product does not ship to Canada. Ring lists black, silver, and brass finishes; availability and authorization status may change.
What is not yet established?
The announcement and product page do not provide an independent security assessment, comparative performance results, or a battery-life figure. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff told TechCrunch that he was concerned the battery would die in a house used infrequently; that explains the product motivation, but does not establish a failure rate or prove how reliably the backup feature works.
