Verdict: Ring Outdoor Camera Plus Solar is a flexible battery-powered outdoor camera with a wide 2K view, but its solar panel is a charging aid—not a replacement for the battery. It makes most sense where the panel can get several hours of direct sun and you have reliable Wi-Fi. Saving and replaying footage also requires a Ring Protect plan; without one, you can still view live video and receive alerts, but recordings and photos are not saved.
What the Ring Outdoor Camera Plus Solar includes
Ring’s Solar configuration pairs the Outdoor Camera Plus Battery with a USB-C solar panel. The camera still uses a removable rechargeable battery; the panel helps keep that battery charged for longer. Ring says the camera charges to 100% when powered by a Ring Solar Panel, but that does not mean the camera runs without a battery.

Ring lists 2K video and a diagonal field of view of 160° (140° horizontal and 80° vertical). Listed features include two-way talk with noise cancellation, advanced motion detection with customizable zones, and a remote-activated siren. These are manufacturer specifications, not a measure of how the camera performs in a particular home.
Ring identifies Outdoor Cam Plus as a 2024 release on its Canada product page. Regional product names, bundles and subscription terms can differ, so check the listing and plan details for your market.

Does Ring Outdoor Camera Plus Solar need a battery?
Yes. The Solar model remains battery-powered. Ring’s support guidance says the solar panel does not power the camera without a battery inserted; it helps keep the battery charged longer. If a location receives little sun, or you want to reduce downtime while charging, a charged spare Quick Release Battery Pack may be useful. Check compatibility on the specific battery listing before buying.
How much sun does the Ring solar panel need?
Ring recommends installing the panel where it will receive at least 2–3 hours of direct sunlight per day. That is a placement recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted charging: shade, cloud cover, camera activity and the position of the panel can affect how much charge it contributes.

Before choosing a mounting point, consider both the panel’s exposure and the camera’s Wi-Fi connection. A sunny spot with weak Wi-Fi may be a poor compromise. Ring recommends a minimum upload speed of 3.5 Mbps for optimal performance and notes that resolution may vary with internet bandwidth. The camera supports dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, including Wi-Fi 6.

Can I view Ring camera recordings without a subscription?
You can view live video and receive alerts without a subscription, according to Ring, but the camera will not save videos or photos for later review without a Ring Protect plan. A plan enables recording, photo capture, saving and sharing. This changes the camera’s usefulness: live monitoring is available without a plan, while reviewing an event after it happens depends on subscription coverage. Plan names, prices, trials and retention terms vary by region and may change, so check Ring’s current terms for your location.
Ring also lists customizable privacy zones and the Ring Control Center for managing privacy and security settings. These app controls can help limit what the camera monitors, but they do not replace choosing a considerate camera position or establish how every aspect of data handling works.

Outdoor Camera Plus Battery vs Solar vs Plug-in
| Configuration | Power source and placement | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | Quick Release Battery Pack; no panel or outlet is required at the camera location. | Offers placement flexibility, but the battery may need manual charging. |
| Solar | Battery camera with a USB-C solar panel; the panel needs direct sun and does not replace the battery. | Can help keep the battery charged longer where exposure is suitable; charging still depends on conditions and use. |
| Plug-in | Indoor/Outdoor Power Adapter; requires access to an outlet and a suitable cable route. | Avoids relying on a removable battery for power, but ties placement to the outlet and cable path. |
Ring describes the solar panel as an addition to the Battery camera, rather than a different camera with a separate image-quality specification. The USB-C panel may be packaged separately, so verify exactly what a seller’s Solar bundle contains before ordering. Ring also lists the panel separately as an option for converting the Outdoor Camera Plus Battery to solar charging.

The specifications do not establish a real-world battery runtime for this Solar configuration. Ring’s stated sunlight guidance describes a recommended installation condition, not a runtime promise, and no published battery-runtime figure for this exact setup is established here. Actual charging and battery life can vary with sun exposure, weather, Wi-Fi conditions and camera activity; it is not possible to promise all-day or maintenance-free operation from the listed specifications alone.

Quick Recap
- Solar is a better fit when the panel can receive the recommended direct sun and the camera has dependable Wi-Fi.
- Battery may suit shaded locations where you accept periodically removing and charging the battery.
- Plug-in may suit a location near an appropriate outlet where a cable can be routed safely.
- Any configuration needs a recording-plan decision if you want to save and revisit footage rather than rely only on live view and alerts.
