For a new camera, choose Set Up a Device > Security Cams, scan its QR code, and follow the prompts to join your home Wi-Fi. What you need before setup
Ring setup requires a home Wi-Fi network, the Ring app, and a phone or tablet. Have the network password ready, update the app and mobile device if updates are available, and keep the phone near the camera during setup. Charge a battery-powered camera before starting. Ring’s product FAQ says all Ring devices support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; some models also support 5 GHz. Check your exact model’s specifications before trying to connect it to a 5 GHz network.

Set up a Ring camera for the first time
- Open the Ring app. Sign in or create an account, then choose Set Up a Device and Security Cams from the dashboard.
- Scan the camera’s QR code. Its location depends on the model. If you cannot find it, use the app’s model-specific help.
- Confirm the address and name. Follow the prompts to select or enter the location and choose a default or custom name for the camera.
- Put the camera in setup mode. Follow the instructions for your model; setup button locations differ across product lines. Ring’s camera setup guide illustrates the app-led process for a specific battery camera.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. When prompted, join the temporary Ring setup network, select your home network, and enter its password. Keep the camera near the router while it connects and let any software update finish before interrupting power.
The app’s prompts can vary with camera model, app version, and region. Use the instructions shown for your particular device rather than assuming every camera has the same button or setup sequence.

Reconnect a Ring camera that has gone offline
- In the Ring app, open the camera’s settings and choose Device Health.
- Under Network, tap Reconnect or Change Network, then follow the prompts.
- Watch for the camera’s light pattern or audio cues, which can indicate what it is doing during the connection process.
If the app displays an offline icon, check it for an error code and suggested steps. Ring’s offline-device troubleshooting page covers this flow; menu labels may differ slightly across app versions or regions.

If the camera still will not connect
Confirm power first
Check that the camera is switched on and, for a battery-powered model, charge the battery. For a hardwired camera, verify that it has the correct power source. If the app indicates a power problem, use only accessories compatible with that exact model.
Check the Wi-Fi connection and password
- Move the camera closer to the router temporarily, or move the router if practical. Confirm that your phone can connect to the same home network.
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully. A changed password means the camera may need to be connected to the network again.
- Try a 2.4 GHz network if the camera does not support 5 GHz or cannot connect to the 5 GHz band. Every Ring device supports 2.4 GHz, but 5 GHz support depends on the model.
Check setup and router conditions
Make sure the camera is in setup mode when adding or reconnecting it. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guidance also identifies guest networks, router firewall or port settings, multiple routers, and unusual characters in a network name as possible setup complications. Router-specific changes can affect other devices, so contact your internet provider or router manufacturer if you are unsure what to adjust.

Use a reset or power cycle only after basic checks
If the camera cannot find or connect to its setup network, or remains offline after the checks above, Ring suggests a power cycle or factory reset as possible next steps. Their method depends on the model, so follow its own reset instructions rather than applying a universal button location or hold time. A factory reset may require setting up the camera again.
Get help for unresolved problems
If the model-specific steps do not restore the connection, contact Ring Support. For router configuration, ask the internet provider or router manufacturer for guidance.

When a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system may help
Consider coverage equipment only if the camera connects near the router but loses connection or has weak signal at its installed location. Ring identifies a Chime Pro or mesh networking as possible ways to improve coverage, but neither is required to set up a camera. First try repositioning the camera or router; an extender or mesh system adds equipment, setup, and cost, and should be compatible with the camera and existing network. Ring’s FAQ discusses Wi-Fi compatibility and coverage options.
