What to check before requesting a ride
Spend a few minutes in the app’s Safety section before you need it. Feature names, settings, and availability can vary by country, city, account, and app version, so check what is actually offered for your ride rather than assuming every tool is active.

- Find the in-app emergency-help option and understand whether it connects to emergency services, a platform team, or another service.
- Choose trusted contacts and locate trip sharing; decide whom you will share with.
- Check whether trip monitoring, pickup verification, or audio recording is available and whether you need to enable it.
- Know how to report an incident or contact support during and after a trip.
Verify the driver and vehicle at pickup
Before entering, compare the driver’s identity, vehicle description, and license plate with the details shown in the app. Do not rely on the car’s make or color alone. If something does not match, do not get in; use the app to resolve the mismatch or cancel and request another ride.
Use a PIN if the app offers one
Uber describes Verify Your Ride as an optional four-digit PIN that a rider gives the driver. Lyft also offers optional PIN Verification, under which the driver enters the PIN before starting the ride. Availability can depend on settings and location. A PIN adds a pickup check, but it does not replace matching the driver and vehicle to the trip in your app. Uber’s rider safety page and Lyft’s safety page describe their respective tools.

Know how to get emergency help
Locate the emergency option while you are in a safe place, and read the app’s current instructions. Uber’s rider page describes an in-app Emergency Button that can connect to 911 and display trip and location details for the dispatcher. It says that in select Canadian cities, information is automatically shared with emergency services when a rider calls. Lyft describes Emergency Help and access to ADT emergency professionals through its app. These are different platform descriptions, not evidence that the same emergency connection is available on every trip.
If you are in immediate danger and cannot use the app, call the local emergency number directly when possible. Do not wait for an automatic check-in or assume that an app feature will contact help without an action from you.

Set up trip sharing with someone you trust
Uber’s Share My Trip lets riders select trusted contacts and create reminders to share trip details. Lyft lists Location Sharing among its safety features. Before pickup, choose the contact and check that sharing is active for the ride. Let the person know what you would like them to do if they cannot reach you; sharing a trip does not mean someone is monitoring it continuously.

Uber says RideCheck uses sensor and GPS data to help identify events such as a long stop or route deviation, then checks in and offers tools. Lyft says Smart Trip Check-In contacts riders when it notices something unusual. Uber also describes on-trip reporting and 24/7 incident support.

Check recording options, privacy, and local rules
Recording features vary by platform and location. Read the in-app notice before using one, and check the law where the trip takes place; recording-consent requirements differ by jurisdiction.

Uber audio recording
Uber’s US rider page says audio recording can be set up through Safety preferences or started from the Safety Toolkit. A rider may share a recording with Uber after the trip. The page says recordings are encrypted and inaccessible to the rider, driver, or support unless attached to an incident report; it also notes state-specific consent rules. See Uber’s US audio-recording information for the terms described there.
Uber’s UK page describes a different arrangement: the recording is stored encrypted on the phone, and Uber cannot access its contents unless the rider opens an incident report and includes it. The page says an unshared recording is automatically deleted after 14 days. That retention detail is specific to the UK page and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Lyft recording
Lyft describes Ride Recording as available to riders and drivers in US and Canadian regions. Its safety page also says drivers may use video recording and riders will be notified when it is on. Check the app’s current instructions and notices for availability and settings.

A feature list can help you decide which tools to set up, but it cannot establish which platform is safer overall. Uber’s and Lyft’s pages are official company descriptions, not an independent head-to-head assessment of safety outcomes. For a practical comparison, check:
- Whether the feature is available for your location, account, and trip.
- What action you must take, such as enabling a setting, sharing a PIN, or starting a recording.
- Whether emergency help connects to local emergency services, platform support, or a third-party professional.
- What trip or location information is shared, and with whom.
- How recordings are stored, when they can be accessed, and what notice is provided.
For current feature descriptions, consult Uber’s rider safety page, Uber’s US audio-recording page, Uber’s UK audio-recording page, and Lyft’s safety page. Availability and procedures may change, so the app’s current local instructions matter most.
