It can use local resources such as files, operating-system features, or peripherals and still connect to remote services. The term overlaps with “thick client” and “fat client,” but the labels are not standardized; where an application runs its processing and stores its state is more precise than the name alone.
What makes an application a rich client?
The defining feature is that the client device performs meaningful application work. That may include processing data, managing an interactive interface, or using local facilities such as the file system, printers, and other operating-system capabilities. A rich client can also call remote services or rely on a server for some functions; a server connection alone does not make it a thin client.

This architecture can support responsive interaction and features that integrate closely with the device. The precise mix of local and server work depends on the application.
Rich client vs. thin client
Rich and thin clients are best understood as ends of a spectrum, not as rigid technical categories. A rich client places more capability on the device; a thin client relies more heavily on server-side processing and centrally delivered services.

| Aspect | Rich client | Thin client |
|---|---|---|
| Processing | Meaningful application work runs on the device. | More processing is handled by a server. |
| Local resources | May use local files, operating-system features, peripherals, and device compute. | Typically depends more on centrally provided services; the exact access varies by design. |
| Connectivity | Some tasks may work offline, if the application is designed for it. | Core functions commonly depend more on a connection to the server. |
| Deployment and management | Local installation and updates can add deployment and device-management work. Smart-client designs can combine local capability with centralized management. | Centralized delivery can reduce the amount of software managed on each device. |
| Interaction | Can support responsive interfaces and platform-specific capabilities. | Interaction relies more on the server and delivery model, though implementation details matter. |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. For example, offline support is not automatic in a rich client: it depends on which features work locally and how the application handles data synchronization. A thin client may still use some local resources. To compare two real applications, look at where processing happens, which functions require a connection, and how local data is managed.
How “rich,” “thick,” and “fat” client relate
“Thick client” and “fat client” are commonly used for software that performs substantial processing locally; some vendor glossaries use “rich client” as another name for a thick client. Microsoft’s historical discussion emphasizes native execution and access to local operating-system features. Because usage varies by context, these terms do not define a universally fixed boundary.

“Smart client” is also used for architectures that combine local application capabilities with remote services or centralized management. Rather than treating these labels as formal classifications, describe the actual division of work between device and server.

Desktop applications such as word processors and spreadsheets illustrate the familiar rich-client pattern: the application runs on the computer and can interact with local files, while networked features may connect it to remote services. Microsoft’s older architectural material uses Word, Excel, Money, and Outlook as examples; these are historical illustrations, not a claim about the current architecture of every version or configuration.

The Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) is a development platform example. Eclipse documentation describes it as a set of plug-ins that developers can extend to build client applications using its UI toolkits and extension points. Eclipse RCP is one way to build client software, not a requirement for an application to qualify as a rich client. See the Eclipse Rich Client Platform documentation.
Advantages and trade-offs
- More capable local interaction: Local processing can make interaction responsive and support device-specific features.
- Access to device resources: The application may work with local files, peripherals, and operating-system facilities.
- Potential to work offline: Local functions can remain available without a connection, but only when explicitly designed to do so.
- More client-side upkeep: Installing and updating software across devices can increase deployment and management complexity.
- Coordination with remote services: When local and server-side data or functions coexist, the design must account for connectivity and synchronization.
The practical choice is a balance: put enough functionality on the device to meet interaction and local-resource needs, while considering the cost of deployment, updates, and managing local data.

How to identify a rich client in practice
- Check where core work happens. If the device performs substantial application processing, that is a strong sign of a rich-client design.
- Check what it can do locally. Look for meaningful use of local files, operating-system features, peripherals, or device compute.
- Test what requires connectivity. Determine which tasks continue offline and how changes are synchronized when the connection returns.
- Consider deployment. Find out whether software must be installed and updated on each device or is delivered and managed centrally.
No single characteristic settles the label. The clearest description states which functions run locally, which depend on servers, and how the application handles data when connectivity changes.
